"My wife and I have been regular visitors to Keswick for many years, and a meal at The George has always been on the agenda, as good food and a great atmosphere were assured. Despite the more recent poor reviews (although those on their website appear much more glowing? we decided to remain loyal and see for ourselves. Upon entering we had a look at the old snug room on the left, this used to be a room of great charm, with eclectic prints on the walls and assorted Knick knacks strewn around, and a lovely old fireplace with a roaring fire during the colder months. Sadly the room seems to have been largely stripped, and now seems quite austere and unwelcoming, there is now a table blocking the fireplace. Onto the bar area, this again used to be a place of great character, with assorted items of furniture, and was always crowded with a mix of locals and walkers. Again this space appears to have been stripped, losing its charm in the process. It appears to have been deserted by locals and walkers. The real ale pumps which used to have pride of place have been shunted into the far corner to make way for trendier offerings, and there is no longer the same variety on offer. My wife requested a glass of the medium range wine, not available!, they suggested an alternative which turned out to be more expensive. We had booked a table, were a little early but as we did not fancy lingering in the bar we made our way through to the restaurant, where we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. The menu now consists largely of the usual mainstream dishes, gone is the specials board, as are the game dishes, and the lovely lamb Henry. I chose the chicken and mushroom pie, my good lady the chicken and chorizo kebab. While we waited the couple at the next table were served, one had the steak and ale pie, the other the chicken pie. For some reason the size of the steak pie was significantly bigger than the chicken one. Granted it was a little more expensive, but you would think this would reflect the cost of the ingredients. A different disgruntled diner queried the discrepancy with the waiter, who said he would try to find a good answer, but he did not return. I consoled myself with the fact that my chicken pie would have less calories. Our food arrived, my pie was OK but a little bland, the pastry looked somewhat anaemic, and lacked flavour, which takes some doing. The buttery mash as described seemed to be on only nodding terms with the butter and again was bland. Everything needed more seasoning, especially a good hit of pepper. The veg however was well cooked. My wife said her kebab was nicely cooked, although the crumbed feta was hard to spot, and the pomegranate seeds even harder. There didn’t seem a lot for the price. The flat bread, which appeared to double up as the naan, was placed on top of grease proof paper, why would you? The diner next to use went for the cow pie, so I was quite excited to see it. I had visions of the pie of legend of bygone years, a succulent piece carved from the mother pie, the only uncertainty being whether you would get a corner or middle piece with their different pastry/meat ratios, it was special regardless Todays version is a pale imitation, pale also being the operative word when describing the pastry. It is an individually prepared portion, which would explain why no half size option, as you can’t cut the serving dish in half. Regrettably both the food, and the establishment appear somewhat soulless, and we can’t say we would return."

Went for early dinner and had a great meal lovely food at good prices. Wide choice for vegetarians and the Spinach and mushroom Lasagne was really tasty. We were very well attended to during the meal the staff made sure that we were happy with everything and seemed to genuinely want us to have a positive experience. Would recommend. View menu

Seated immediately by the lovely landlady. Stanley looked after us and bought our food out. The food was faultless. Steak and ale pie and chicken and mushroom pie, both with Mash, vegetables and gravy. Stanley’s sense of humour cracked me up. Hospitality is a difficult industry to be in and he had it covered. Thanks for a lovely meal.

Stopped here for lunch after dreaming about the homemade chips on my wet miserable walk, they are (were) the best ever. I was gutted to be presented with oven chips! I ordered scampi which was overdone. Partner got bangers and mash, which was also just average. The place seems to have changed hands. Even the orange squash was like dishwater. Staff were very friendly however food was just not up to scratch. Sad to say it but I certainly won’t be back after many years of this being a staple in my annual trip to Keswick.

I ordered Baked Camembert cheese starter gluten free option, but was given Non gluten free, I asked as usual when I 'm presented with my meal, is this gluten free? I was told, 'it should be!! the server then returned with the rest of order, he then took back my food said better check with the kitchen, he then returned my food with Gluten Free bread, but in my opion they had just removed the gluten bread and just put gluten free bread on the same plate! With is totally unacceptable, I asked them correct their error was told the kitchen had given me a complete new meal, to which I feel they were lying as crumbs from the original bread were still on the plate!! All other meals we ordered were ve... View menu

We tried the George for a Sunday lunch following its recent management change. We were shown to our table by the waitress whom came promptly for the drinks order, followed by the food order. After a 45 min wait, the Sunday roasts arrived. The initial thought was poor quality food. Under cooked roast potatoes, near to raw parsnips, dry Yorkshire puddings, dry mash and thin gravy (which is a personal preference). The main disappointment was the dry and tough beef. Had to ask for sauces and waitress missed the chance to ask for further drinks, but we already had decided to leave asap. I offered my feedback to the restaurant manager whom apologised, as I overheard another customer adjusting what...

Out of 4 of us, 1 said the meal was good (the thai veg curry) the chicken kebab eater said it was very dry served on greaseproof paper under it so every time you cut a piece of the flat bread it was on, you got paper with it, the scampi eater left most of it, it was very dark brown, over cooked, dry horrible I had basically Hunters Chicken, but there was next to no bbq sauce in it, so very dry, it was so overcooked it was like shoe leather hard to cut, chewy as anything. Soooo very disappointed. On a Saturday night, this cant have been the regular chefs night off, so very bad food. No we did not complain. The staff were lovely if the chef is that rubbish, sending stuff back, kicking up a sto...

"I would have loved to rate our dining experience at the Ivy House a lot higher but we were to leave somewhat disappointed. The dining area was pleasant and intimate with well appointed decor, the waitress and waiters pleasant, polite and attentive. The varied menu looked very appetising with most tastes catered for. We chose two courses from the main menu, the Duck Breast and a Fish Dish for myself. Contrary to other reviews we were to wait over 40 minutes before the food was presented to us. We were not advised of any delays or even the expected length of time we might have to wait. The food on arrival was well presented and flavoursome although I did not consider two small stem broccoli spears a serving. I also asked the waiter why there was no Samphire to accompany my dish as stated on the menu, this comment was also reinforced by a fellow diner who ate the same dish just prior to me. The waiter advised me that he would ask the chef. I did not receive a response to my question during further table service and subsequently asked the waiter again. On returning the waiter advised me the chef said “he will try to remember to put it on next time”, a somewhat disrespectful comment. The Cheese platter we were presented with was lacklustre and sparse, quince jelly and a small dish of chutney being the predominant feature. For ourselves we did not feel that our dining experience represented good value for money."
