"Our room (number 2) was large, but strangely had very little space on which to place items such as a laptop, bag, books etc. The bedside cupboards were very small, the surface being taken over by the phone, lamp and radio etc, leaving very little room for water glass etc over night. One corner of the room was taken over by a bath. I realise there is something of a fashion for this in hotels at the moment, but feel it would have been far more useful if there had been a table and a couple of chairs there to use when sending or receiving emails or checking information on the Internet. However, the wifi signal turned out to be dreadful, moving at glacial speed and eventually giving up. Luckily I did not have any urgent matters to deal with. Tea and coffee in the room is always appreciated, however the arrangements in room 2 were not good. The big modern coffee maker was unnecessary; the money spent on that would have been far better used to provide a teapot (I dislike making tea with a tea bag in a cup) and maybe a small fridge in which to keep fresh milk (or even a small thermos flask full of fresh milk, which I have experienced in other hotels). UHT milk in sachets is vile, and there is really no excuse for using it these days. Also the small cups were pretty useless. Decent sized mugs would have been preferable. The piece of paper we were given at check in stated that the pedestrian access through the side door on the street would be locked after 11.00 pm. In fact it was locked when we tried to access it at 10.30pm, meaning that we had to walk around the corner to the entrance through the car park. I’m afraid we also had a less than perfect experience at breakfast time. The young girl who served us was delightful, but that’s where the delight ended! The table which contained the continental breakfast was most unattractive the only fresh fruit being a couple of oranges and apples and some very tired looking bananas. The pastries were very good, but the coffee and the fruit juice were not. The fruit juice was not fresh and the coffee was undrinkable, bitter stewed stuff contained in a thermos jug. The table on which all this was displayed was swimming with liquid (either coffee or juice I think). I ordered one poached egg on toast but was actually served with two. I might have been tempted to eat the second had the first been good unfortunately it was not. I don’t know what procedure you use to cook your eggs, but this one had obviously been cooked some time before, held in suspended animation in some way and then warmed up just before service (though not very efficiently as it was lukewarm). The white was of a jelly like consistency and undercooked, while the yolk was overcooked. A most unpleasant experience I’m afraid (needless to say I did not eat the second egg). I am sorry to be so negative, I’d far rather be giving you a review full of thanks and praise for a lovely, comfortable stay, but I’m afraid I can’t. Bed and breakfast for the night cost us £225 (including the early check in fee) which is a great deal of money and I feel very short changed. But finally I have to take issue most strongly with your car parking set up. Luckily we had been warned by friends about the new NCP arrangements and the necessity to enter one’s car registration on an iPad in the hotel building within 10 minutes of arrival. We saw no warning signs in the car park itself and I see from reading Trip Advisor reviews since we returned home, that a lot of people have been caught out and charged a fine (sometimes as much as £100) if they failed to follow the requirements. This has resulted in some very angry reviews and I’m not at all surprised. And local people whom we met during our visit to the town were all scathing and furious about the new set up. I don’t know who has the advantage of the hundreds of pounds of fines which have obviously resulted from this new arrangement; whether it’s you or NCP, but it seems to be a ridiculous situation. The damage to the hotel’s reputation must be huge and very destructive. How terrible to wantonly bring about such loss of reputation. I trust you will give some thought to amending the arrangements."

Total chaos with orders late and wrong , dry overdone steaks , really a fiasco. Well meaning and friendly staff but they spend half their time having to apologise for the chaos.

We had a family birthday celebration meal on Easter Monday. The restaurant was very quiet and little atmosphere. We have been regular customers for a number of years and this was first visit since refurbishment. Disgusted to receive threatening parking fine for £170 for the time we had the meal. Management refuse to intervene. We will not return.

I haven’t been back to the priory for a bit of time, however my husband and I fancied trying it again today and I am so glad we did. We both ate from the 2 course Sunday lunch menu and both the starter and mains were delicious! The beef dinner really was very tasty. Service was also really good throughout from the bar staff, to our waitress and front of house. We will definitely be returning back to the priory more regularly now. View menu

I went out for a meal with my partner for a 6th year anniversary and whilst the food was good they rejected a voucher which was bought of the priory website before Christmas but the person who bought it for me was advised it would be usable as they are a sister company with Bodega and has the priory address on the actual voucher. Apparently there was no way of redeeming the voucher (despite it being the sister company, and the person who purchased it being told it would be usable there. had they known it was not usable in the priory they wouldn’t have bought it as I live local to the restaurant and it’s always been one of my favourites but this has left a sour taste.

I have been a regular here for many years and it’s undoubtedly changed and a shadow of its former self! We ate here a few weeks ago and it was poor, however, we returned this evening and the food was very good, but the service still bad! We arrived at 5 (Saturday) on the off chance they’d have a table for an hour or so (we had our 4yo with us) and was told “sorry, we are fully booked”, but the restaurant was empty! I explained we only want a main meal and perhaps a dessert so give us a 7/7:30 table. They almost reluctantly agreed (where’s the business acumen). We sat down and no one took drinks order so had to walk around to find someone. The bread we ordered as an appetiser arrived minutes...

Dreadful. I was disappointed when i went in May with my Dad, there were 4 of us. The steaks we ordered were mediocre at best, service was slovenly and the bill was over £200 with barely any drinks and maybe two puddings. We returned reluctantly for a friend’s birthday recently and the entire table was disappointed with their food. My scallops to start were just sad. 3 scallops drowning in what tasted like only melted butter, served in a deep dish so they lost any plumpness, and were soggy. And sole as a main was not awful, but not worth the cost, just plain and tasteless. We were charged £5 for each bread, which was just brought to the table without asking. It was just poor. We had to ask co... View menu

Came here for lunch with friends, and the food was superb. It was an hour late as they forgot our order, but staff were incredibly apologetic and offered us free drinks which was very kind. A major downside that I must mention though, was the parking. A few weeks after our visit, we received a £100 parking ticket from NPC (a private company employed by the Priory to enforce fines in their car park). Apparently, an e-permit is required to use the Priory car park on the, however during our visit this was not at any point signalled to us by signage or staff. Despite their efforts, the Priory seemed unable to do anything to stop the fine for being enforced as NPC kept pursuing us for the fine, e...

My recent dining experience at The Priory Restaurant was underwhelming and disappointing. We faced several issues that made the evening less enjoyable. Firstly, the staff forgot our drinks order, which set a poor tone for the evening. When the steak arrived, it was exceedingly rare despite having ordered it medium rare. After requesting it to be cooked a little longer, it came back burnt on the outside but still blood red inside – a sign of poor kitchen skills. Also the peppercorn sauce came out late, very small portion and cold. Additionally, they forgot the chips, a basic part of the meal (which incidentaly was charged for separately who just orders a steak on its own? . While the service...
