"When planning to travel from Portsmouth to Normandy, my Dad and I were keen to find a place close to the ferry terminal, that would have a good traditional English pub that served hearty food. We didn't have to look far upon our arrival in Fareham. From the moment we walked into the pub we were greeted with a very warm welcome by the gentleman behind the bar. Even though we arrived fairly early for an evening meal, he was very obliging. The Golden Lion reminds me of the old London pubs. It has a quintessentially English feel to it with traditional decor. They serve a good selection of fresh cooked food at a very reasonable price and serve generous portions. Credit to the chef, who was a lovely young man, he clearly takes pride in his work and the fish and chips are one of the nicest we have ever had. For that extra special something treat yourself to the Biscoff Profiteroles, I defy anyone to eat them without licking their lips. The owner was very welcoming, she took the time to talk with us and had we not been having to travel so early the next day we would have stayed longer. All too often pubs just don't get it right. But The Golden Lion is on the money and they deserve every success in their business. Thank you"

Stayed overnight a week ago to attend an event on the Friday in Alverstoken. The welcome was superb ad the meals top notch. Best fish and chips ever! When we were prepping the Moho ready to leave the owner came to say goodbye and hope to see you again. Such service and lovely people x

Good range of beers and an excellent food menu to choose from. A lot more authentic and welcoming pub/staff than most other places. Made a nice change from the plastic and neon bars in town. Sometimes you just want somewhere that doesn't have a TV in every corner, or the local soaks speaking louder than they need to. Food was good and tasty, hot and timely. Bar staff friendly and chatty but not intrusive. View menu

I have reviewed this pub before (also 5 stars but as it was a long time ago and I have repeatedly had excellent service here, I thought I would write another. This visit was at lunch time and I have never had lunch here before. Tried their new sandwich lunch menu. My colleague had a bacon, brie and cranberry sarnie and I opted for the tuna mayo. Lovely (soothills fresh bread and served with piping hot crispy chips (a huge portion of chips! Friendly service as is the norm. Highly recommend this pub.

This was our first visit here and we would definitely return. Had the Sunday lunch the Yorkshire pudding was exceptional. I had the vegan pie (not vegan just fussy) my husband had the chicken we devoured it. The pudding options were great we shared a sticky toffee cheesecake and lotus biscoff profiteroles. The staff were so friendly and helpful and we found the decor to be charming. Loved all the old pictures of Fareham. It has a games corner too which is a great idea. Highly recommend this place and if you park at Lysess on a Sunday it's free to park.

"We have been going to Ma Kellys for years and sadly today will be our last ever visit. Ordered our normal treat large cod and chips, front of house service no issues at all, in fact, felt extremely sorry for the young lady who had...to put up with the complaints whilst we were there. Had to wait over minutes for our food, my large cod looked like it had been in the fryer for days and was not large and had hardly any fish inside the batter and the chips were suppose to be freshly cooked but again looked like and felt they had been in the fryer for the same amount of time as the code. My other half’s large cod was extremely small and when we asked, apparently it’s now done on weight but the cod was taken back and re-arrived with the same chips but with another potion of cod. At the same time, another couple had already sent their meals back because chips and side orders were cold. I asked to speak to the manager but heard him say he couldn’t come out and then sent a young lad out but I asked to speak to the manager and an angry looking chap came out, said a half hearted sorry and my other half asked for a refund, the manager then disappeared and the same young man re-appeared to complete the refund, I sarcastically said that the manager couldn’t be bothered to complete the refund, he then decided to show up again and another half hearted apology. Two other couples were also asking for refunds. Such a shame, used to be a lovely treat for tasty fish and chips but sadly no more."
