"Visited here on the way back from London. Welcome: The venue was quiet when we arrived, we received a warm welcome from the staff, everyone was very helpful and friendly (and even turned the air con off as my husband commented it was a bit cold). American Diner styling, open kitchen, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Good Menu, with prices to match. Food: We both had a rump steak (medium rare), served with savoury fries, roasted on the vine baby tomatoes and slaw, we ordered a portion of peppercorn sauce and onion rings. We had an affogato for desert. The steak was fabulously tasty and excellently cooked, all the accompaniments were excellent, hot and fresh. We were both really impressed by the presentation, taste and quality of the meal. (My husband is an executive chef and can be difficult to please so this is a high recommendation) . Service: We had drinks beforehand and sat outside in the sun, then came inside to order and eat our meal. Service throughout was excellent, prompt (but not rushed), very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome, all staff clearly demonstrated that they cared about our experience with them. We didn't catch the names of the lovely lady in charge at front of house or the gentleman behind the bar or the two kitchen staff, but all were extemporary, as was Anya, who served our food and cleared our table. Would recommend and will return based on our experience last night."

"Great visit here in July 2024. We were walking Offas Dyke and had booked to stay after walking the leg from Abergavenny. On arrival the landlady greeted us, despite being mucky and smelly from our 22 mile hike, and having an equally wet and muddy dog among us, we were made extremely welcome. It was a midweek day and we arrived fairly late 20:00) so the kitchen was shortly closing, we ordered our food while a staff member went and bagged us a table and put a dog bed from the stack next to the front door under it, along with some water and dog treats. We went up and settled in while food cooked, we were given towels for the dog once we'd washed him off and really made to feel welcome. The food was great and a beer was equally good, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening in the bar which had a nice atmosphere. The beds were comfortable and we all slept well. mutt included. It's not 5 star luxury but it's a really nice comfortable place to sleep with good food at a sensible price, and it was exactly what we needed during our week of hiking. The only minus point for me was they advertise breakfast but it's room service which I hate I find eating in your room just weird), as the bar is not open in the morning. This should have been made clear on booking so we could line something else up ahead of time. In the event I phoned a contact who runs a fishery on our walking route that day and he had some lovely cooked breakfasts for us after we'd got an hours walking under our belts."

"Visited lunchtime 9 January as a party of five family members, two of whom were ladies in their nineties, and a dog. The booking was made several days in advance and seating requirements explained. When we arrived, no table had been allocated and it was obvious that the staff on duty were not aware of our requirements. The elderly ladies in our party were kept standing while tables were put together to accommodate us. We ordered from the two courses for £16 menu. There was a noticeably long delay before we were served our main course with no apology or explanation for this. Two of us ordered the fish and chips. Now, as the menu stated ‘fish’, we weren’t expecting prime pieces of cod but neither were we expecting a rubbery curled up piece of fish in some batter, which was hardly warm. In fact the chips were hotter. When a waitress came and asked if everything was ok with our food I explained the problem. She offered to take it back to the chef but as we had already waited a long time for our food we were not in the mood for another delay while others in our group carried on eating. There was no offer of compensation. When the main course had been cleared away we waited for someone to offer the dessert board. It didn’t happen. I had to attract the attention of a waitress to bring us the board. Another waitress took our orders. One of our party asked for the crème brûlée and was told that wasn’t on the menu as we’d been given the previous day’s board! As I’ve had to spend time on this review, I might as well point out that the glasses, containing the two ginger and lime drinks that we ordered, were not clean. As well as water stains (I assume) from the dishwasher, there were finger marks on the outside. We didn’t complain about these. We have visited this pub several times in the past, apparently under previous ownership. Maybe the management might consider whether or not they have the right calibre of waiting staff, who don’t stand around chatting, and also checking that all is ok in the kitchen."
