"I do visit the straw kitchen occasionally and have never been disappointed. Brilliant food! Yesterday's bacon sarnies there were three of us) just perfect beautifully cooked and served with a beetroot relish, unbelievable. All cooked to order, takes a little time but then quality...just cannot be rushed. No matter how busy the SK is, service is always polite and courteous."

"Great aubergine bhaji starter and chickpea Balti. Ordered some from takeaway menu which weren't on the main menu not sure why they are not on a larger main menu, as this would be better. Food is lovely, though the service was a little slow at the start. All of us enjoyed the meal."

"Ellie was our server for our visit on Saturday 21st October. We were there for a Sicilian Wine Tasting experience, which was a birthday gift for my husband and I. We were booked in at 4pm and it was quiet. We were seated quickly and Ellie placed the wines we would taste on the table and explained how the experience would play out, however, it did take a while (nearly 30 mins) for us to get started. Once we got started it was a really enjoyable afternoon and Ellie was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. The charcuterie board that came out was absolutely huge and very tasty! An enjoyable experience!"

"Having passed the sign outside saying pop up restaurant, shop, etc we decided to go and have a look. This being a Saturday Not knowing what to expect we were really impressed by the buildings and presentation. Upon entering the door we were approached by a waiter who it turned was the owner. We explained that we had popped in to see what was on offer. Well it was like trying to extract blood from a stone, we really should have known. Eventually he did offer up information and as the venue was extremely attractive we decided to have a coffee and a hot chocolate, both fine. Whilst having our drinks we enquired of a female waitress if the restaurant did a Sunday roast. She confirmed they did. A little reticent we duly booked for 3 pm the next day a table for 3 persons. On the Sunday we arrived and were shown to a table set for 3 by the owner and we apologised that only 2 could make it. The extra place seating was begrudgingly removed. The change from 3 to 2 had not caused any rearrangement of table placement etc. As we were taking our seats the owner stated we have run out of Beef, no apology, nothing. My wife and I sat down and studied the menu. Having studied the menu to see that on offer was pizza, a salad, hake with rice and pasta. I beckoned to the owner and asked was there any replacement for the Sunday roast as there was no similar type dishes on the menu. The owners reply was gobsmacking. No there was no replacement/substitute, no apology and if we didn 't like we were free to walk. Not wishing to outstay our 'welcome ' we duly 'walked '. So we have a restaurant at 3pm on a Sunday running out of roast, the reason we booked, offering no apology , no appropriate replacement displaying a truely unbelievable attitude from the owner. As we left there were numerous other parties arriving, I hope they didn 't require a roast on a Sunday. I can live with stock shortages, but there are ways of dealing with a situation. What I cannot live with is an arrogant attitude from owners to their guests. This I cannot overlook. You might say a bad day at the office, but we experienced the same attitude 2 days running, there will not be a third. As it happens we are local and may have considered this location for our daughters wedding, absolutely not now. If the owner is interested we did get a Sunday roast at a nice pub/restaurant just up the road and yes they were busy."

"What a great dining experience. The restaurant had a lovely ambience, although it was a bit quiet on a Monday lunchtime. The staff were friendly, efficient and attentive and the food tasted great."

"Stopped in here for a pint last night on a whim and ended up staying all evening as we really liked it. Very nice pub, the staff were all fantastic, the beer was good and the regulars were friendly. Planning to go back there for a meal as the food looked lovely."

"This was our first visit since the ferry changed hands. The biggest change for us was the food. The food is different but still good! We went on a Saturday, so can't comment on the Sunday roast but we tried a fair sample of the plates. For starters, we had a soup and a pate. Both went down very well. The soup was a vegetable soup, thick and dull of veggie chunks. The pate was a generous wedge. For mains, we had a steak and kidney pie, fish and chips, half roast chicken, and a fish goujon sandwich. The pie was well filled and a suet pastry for a change. Fish and chips, a fair portion and light looking batter. The half roast chicken was a fairly large bird and the fish goujon sandwich was well filled and tasty. Dessert was a sticky toffee pudding- nice and light, and a fruit crumble with custard, slightly tart but a nice balance against the custard. Service was fast and the team were friendly. We will be back to try the Sunday roasts soon! Price per person: £40–50 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5"

"what a pleasant surprise! best Thai food I ever had. a pub that was taken over by Thai cooks and eating was incredible. we loved the penang and the red curry and can not wait to come back and try something else! definitely recommend if they love Thai food or want to try something new. they still had limited English pub traditional options."

"The Crown Inn has recently relaunched as a Cafe, as well as a pub. The decor is lovely, they have managed to keep it as a ‘good old pub’ whilst creating a relaxing cafe space at the same time. We ate outside, which was no problem (we were seated inside and changed our minds and sat outside next to a children’s play area. Today I sampled the cooked breakfast, as did my son and my husband had the Crown full English (big! whilst they did some chips for my toddlers. The breakfast was honestly the best full English I’ve had in a long time. It was nice to have one that wasn’t cheap meat etc. The bacon was nice and thick, the sausages were lovely (I will be asking where they get them from! and the eggs were so tasty and fresh. Bread that came with it was yummy too. What I liked the most was that it wasn’t really greasy like a lot of fry ups can be. Now, besides the food being delicious, the service was great too. We felt very welcome (with twin toddlers we don’t always feel like we can relax and enjoy and on that basis alone we would return. The pub is spotless (including toilets and is clearly well looked after. The decor has lots of personal touches, which is perhaps how they managed to balance the pub and cafe look! My only issue is I want to try 5 different things on the menu! Great jobs guys, thank you!"

"Good quality restaurant, the food was really delicious. I enjoyed my starter and dessert very much. My main was nice, not bad, I had chicken so it's always hard to flavour chicken I think. Presentation of each dish was great. They give you bread at the start of the meal which is a nice touch. Service was good they added some things to our bill that weren't ours by mistake and when we brought it up, they fixed it straight away. The price was quite high I thought but it was a very nice restaurant and maybe I'd feel different if I had a different main. Overall, I'd highly recommend coming here and would visit again if I was in the area."

"Today, on the 100th birthday of my late uncle, my almost 101-year-old aunt, myself, and two close friends decided to honor the occasion by going out for lunch. We have visited this restaurant many times before and have always had a great experience. Today was no exception. We were warmly welcomed as we arrived separately and were seated in a lovely spot in the restaurant. Our server, Sandra, was kind, patient, and lovely. Our drinks arrived promptly, giving us time to peruse the wonderful menu. The food was served right on time, and we all admired each other's dishes. My aunt enjoyed the Lashford sausage and mash with cabbage - the portion was so generous she had to take some home, but she loved every bite. I had the shoulder of lamb with crushed potatoes, carrots, leeks, and cabbage, which was cooked perfectly. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the jus tied everything together beautifully. My friends both had the quiche with a side salad and were impressed, agreeing that we need to visit this restaurant more often. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert, but they all looked delicious. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff is fabulous, the food is amazing, and every penny was well spent. Thank you for making a difficult day so special."

"We arrive with Family to a friendly welcomed and our booked table was ready and waiting, all the table were socially distance. Being early, 6pmish the restaurant was not overly busy, but still had a good atmosphere. The staff were very helpful and attentive our...order was and the meals arrived in good time and was enjoyed by all 6 of us I would in particularly mention the Fish and chips, which were exceptional well cooked, being beauifully moist and tender fish served with and excellent Tarte sauce and mushy peas, The best battered fish I have ever tasted The only minus was the Lintel curry, although if was a lovely well cooked taste dish, the potion size was a little on the small side for the strapping lad who ordered it"

"we were here yesterday to meet a family we had not seen in 20 years. before the hand 8 of us decided to meet a bit earlier and have an evening meal, which we wish we did not disturb. the service was good to start, but then. it went down from there. my own and my partner shared the ham croquets, first they were cut in the half? not sure why, but we think it could have been to check that they were cooked properly, as they tasted, as if they had come out of the freezer. one had the chicken taquitos, that was just a chicken sluice and was not baked. for the first I had the cattle burger, but with red thorny jam and truffle and parmesan fries. burger was simple, no tomato or salate and the jam was just brewed, almost dried red wobble. Burger-Bunge was out of the freezer when it was crooked. the truffle and parmesan fries tasted nothing like truffle, and the “Parmesan” was not parmesan. I mentioned this at the end and the beautiful waitress went and asked and came with “the cook just said that they were very lightly seasoned”. my partner had the pepperoni pizza that was good. two more guests with us had the chili con carne, who was really a puppy game from chili and rice in a bowl with a little sliced chili above. both were sent back when they were cold. again it looked like it came out of a deep cooler and heated again. well to say we didn't go for the desert! the pub is really nice, and the garden is even better. they have a pergola outside with warm lights, which is beautiful especially in summer evenings. would be definitiw again for a drink in the garden."
"Sunday lunch, always on point. We stopped for lunch with family who were travelling back to Lancashire. We called for an early Sunday lunch and sat in the cosy bar area by the log burner. Very lovely atmosphere, with super friendly staff. The Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious. We had the roast which was accompanied by a hearty selection of vegetables and cauliflower brocoli cheese, so tasty. We highly recommend The Golden Cross....hats off to the Chef and front of house team."

"Having not visited for some time after a rather disappointing meal a few years ago, we decided to visit following some great, recent reviews. The decor has been updated and is now a calm, airy venue with well spaced seating. The manager, Carl was incredibly friendly and helpful. But, most importantly the food was fantastic. I'm annoyed that none of our group took photo's now! We had a couple of the small bite plates as shared starters Scampi, Houlloumi, Crispy Cauliflower Tato Tots all were delicious (and the selection made it really hard to choose just 4 . The Fish and chips were fab with a really good sized piece of fish (you know, where it overhangs the plate! , a friend had the vegan burger which she thoroughly enjoyed, and the dirty fries were just fabulous. There is a smaller selection of desserts, but it is probably enough to choose from to be honest. Between us we had the Vanilla Poached pineapple with Coconut icecream and honey comb and the Eton mess not a crumb was left! I'd definitely urge anyone to give them a try. They're trying really hard to bring the place back to it's former glory and are doing a really good job. We'll definitely be going back and recommending to friends and family. The only reason for a 4 for atmosphere was because it was a quiet Thursday evening."

"Visited for dinner, was greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. We did the tasting menu and were excited to see what the restaurant had to offer. I really enjoyed the restaurant, and found the staffs personalities to be some of my favourite parts of the dinner. We had a special evening trying the menu. The food is incredibly well plated, with some beautiful technique and interesting colours. I found, however, some of the flavours did not match the aesthetics off the dishes overall. We also had empty aperitif glasses along with empty gin bottles on the table for about 4 courses, which I had to ask to be taken after they had been ignored each time. It unfortunately took away from the experience to have our table resemble a pub. We also had to provide a polite reminder to receive the wine we had ordered after waiting a quite a number of courses. Although it is not a deal breaker, this is not the level of attentiveness expected from a restaurant of this calibre. Overall, friendly staff and attractive dishes, but I found the flavours to lack creativeness and the attentiveness could be improved."

"We happened upon this pub looking for a meal that evening (Tuesday). The lovely owner said that he could accommodate us but there wasn’t much food as he was usually closed. He came up with duck, scampi or ha, eggs and chips. We opted for the duck. He took my name and number and arranged to arrive around 6:30. Such a lovely friendly pub, a couple of drinks then we were taken into the restaurant. Loads of old classic motorbikes in there, fab. It turned out to be a set meal, soup (didn’t know what it was, surprise) turned out to be mussel soup. Absolutely delicious with a nice big g chunk of bread. The duck was cooked perfectly, came with mash and fresh veg and home made soup plum chutney, delicious Thought that was it but no, dessert was delicious included as well, out came a Oreo cheesecake, again homemade. Superb welcome, delicious food, we will be back! Thank you"
