"I wondered why this restaurant described itself on the board outside as ‘fusion’, why there were so many Korean dishes on the menu and why the serving staff have heard of Asahi beer but haven’t heard of The Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese daily newspaper that is at least 50 years old. The answer is that the Akasaka website isn’t being completely honest when it describes their Northampton branch as a Japanese restaurant. They aren’t really Japanese, although some of their menu items are clearly Japanese. Don’t let that put you off, however, as they are serving excellent food and we enjoyed our meal there very much. It cost us about £70 (inc. 10% tip) for our meal for two people including a 175ml glass of Sauvignon Blanc for my lovely wife and two 330ml bottles of Asahi Dry for me. The sushi was excellent, the edamame beans were great but we didn’t feel that the Dolsot Bibimbap (a Korean dish with loads of rice, some shredded vegetables, prawns and a fried egg on top) offered very good value for money at just under sixteen pounds. We would recommend Akasaka in Northampton and would certainly go there again, but if we want a genuinely Japanese meal, prepared and served by Japanese staff, then we will be sticking to Ginza Restaurant on Wellingborough Road in Northampton. Don’t like the way that the male members of staff at Sakura on Bridge Street speak to their female colleagues, very disrespectful, so we avoid that Japanese restaurant nowadays. Great to have a choice of three Japanese restaurants in Northampton post-pandemic, and our favourite of the three is Ginza."

"Thank you Akasaka for a beautiful experience. Restaurant absolutely stunning, friendly staff and amazing tasting food. My family and I dined here on mother's day. Can I just say the food taste incredible everything we ordered on the menu tasted superb and we finished it all We had 4 omurice rice, prawn tempura rolls, prawn tempura, avocado salad, avocado rolls, Mayonnaise taki udon noodles, chicken donburi with rice, deep fried chicken thighs with sushi rice, coconut ice cream and fantastica dessert. We also returned the next day and had a repeat of some of the dishes (the omurice egg wrap and Mayonnaise taki udon noodles were my favourite Can I also say, this restaurant reminds me of Mino. "This was my first visit and for my first visit, I brought alone my family and best friend and his family. As we all love Japanese food, our expectation was high. There was a great selection to choose from which also caters for people who is not a Sushi fan with rice, noodles and BBQ meals. The service was great, not too short, where you keep asking for more time, and not too long where you wished you went somewhere else. The food arrived hot and very well presented and you best come hungry as there is plenty of it. The Sushi is really fresh and very tasty. I would highly recommend this restaurant for value for money, great food and friendly surrounding."

"I do not recommend this restaurant! The menu looked nice, but each dish had 2 prices side by side. We asked for the regular mains, and then asked for some garlic bread as a starter to have whilst we waited for our mains. As we finished the starter, the waiter came and took the empty plates away and said that now he was going to request the mains and the wait would be another 15-20 minutes. When the mains finally arrived, the portions were extremely small and there was really only pasta! At this point, we decided to go elsewhere for desert and asked for the bill. All the mains were priced at the large portions rate and there was the usual 12,5% service charge. We spoke with the person who came to take the payment and explained that we wouldn't pay the service charge as we were not pleased with the overall service and especially the main dishes. The waiter simply said Ok' in an unhappy way, took the payment and went away. Overall, the staff are not friendly and the service and food does not meet the standard set by the price charged!"

"Shimogano opened in 2013 in a parade of shops on Camden Parkway. It is named after an ancient Kyoto Shinto shrine that is a UNESCO world heritage site. The restaurant has a small dining area and bar at ground level, the main dining room being in the basement. The décor is fairly basic, and the restaurant serves a wide variety of Japanese cuisine styles, from sushi to tempura to noodles and beyond. This slightly scattergun approach is normal in London but unusual in Japan, where most restaurants specialise, sometimes to an extreme degree e.g. some restaurants serve only eel, or only tonkatsu. "Starting with the table it’s not cleaning properly felt sticky when we sat. The service is bad and unprofessional, we stayed over 25 minutes no one even approached us to ask. Later when the food started arriving the waiter would just place the order and disappear not ask if we need anything or how was the food. Sushi arrived and we had to ask for soy sauce 4 times to get it. Fried chicken was terrible there was barley any chicken inside the batter and if there was it would be dry and over cooked. The Beef to Abaya was very dry and tasted more like lamb. The menu California had crab meat but it had a poot quality crab stick. I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant."

"As usual the food was of a very high standard but due to the fact that no manager was available and our regular waitress was also not there, service was not as good as it usually is. There were two comi waiters who tried very hard, were most polite and did their utmost to serve in a proper way. It was just a pity that they had not received the training that the regular staff seem to have. We and our friends will, of course, go again and hope that by next time there will be some more experienced waiting staff available to serve."

"this small, family-run Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem. the service is imperfect, but very polite to add the charm of the place. the menu is relatiw classic with taking some scrub rolls. one is the house roll (educated), which contains a lot of fish and is quite large cut. the actual excerpt was the horse mackerel sashimi (figurative). beautifully presented and extremely fresh and delicious! I would recommend this place to anyone who is close to the opposite and wants a high-quality No-Frills Japanese meal."

"Absolutely terrible service it took almost 2 hours for us to receive our food, I rang twice, I presume they’d forgotten our order and I reminded them the first time I rang, they told me it was ‘on its way’ a 15 minute journey, strangely took 40 minutes. If the food was amazing it would have been worth it, we had to warm it up and the salad literally consisted of 2 small leaves, shocking food, shocking service!"
