"Kan Pai Edinburgh 17/10/2014 After missing September, The Food Club made a triumphant comeback this month. Although short on the usual numbers we enjoyed a fine meal at Kan Pai. We jumped on the train and met at Haymarket before a short taxi trip to our destination. T’was a crisp evening and our taste buds were bubbling with excitement. The restaurant looked great on the outside and even better inside, we were sat with plenty of room in the middle of the restaurant and able to take in the atmosphere of the tables surrounding us. We started by ordering our alcoholic beverages… as is tradition. We got a round of Sapporo Beer and a bottle of Saki on ice, as recommended by the staff. The menu was fantastic with a great variety of sushi and filled with colourful photo’s, making our selection process very difficult. We went for a wide variety and shared very little with our peers, far too good for sharing. A few members found that chopsticks were a difficult obstacle but perseverance is the name of the game. For one such member he was so good with chopsticks that he attempted the Miso Soup with them……. Instant fail. Another member decided using them as spears was a much more effective method…. One chopstick…… ADVANCED LEVEL SKILLS. The soup was very tasty and a warming treat. It was followed with a selection of bright dishes including Avocado Maki, Seabass Nigiri and some kind of fantastic Crab dish. All went down well and accompanied with a delicate tea pot of soy and a plate of pickled ginger and wasabi. More dishes arrived, Teriyaki Salmon, Squid Ngiri Takoyaki Octopus. Flattering octopus balls, delightful in texture and served with what can only be described as tasty saw dust. Again there was no faulting the quality of the food. The smiles were beaming from our faces as we tucked in. We got a selection of larger dishes to fill us to the brim. A couple of Rainbow rolls, beautiful Salmon Tuna married together with avocado and also the Kan Pai Special roll which was King Prawn avocado rolled together. The Saki was delightfully sipped throughout the night from the small cup like bowls and it was both smooth and warming down to the chest. The Sapporo was as good as ever and very refreshing throughout the dining experience. Usually we like a dessert at food club but the only let down (other than a certain members questionable moustache) was perhaps that they only had ice cream on offer but in fairness it would be wrong to expect a chocolate fudge cake after that meal. Between those in attendance, I think we were in agreement that in terms of food quality this venue stole the show and I would highly recommend to anyone. Very affordable and very friendly staff. We drifted to the Grassmarket for a pint seeing The Big Yin, Billy Connolly on our way. The night finished speaking fluent German and discussing another members receding hairline. HEY DU!!! We bid you farewell… until November. AUF WEIDERSEHN SAYONARA"

"We absolutely adored Chelsea Quarter! Their coffee was exceptional - bold, smooth, and delicious. The pastries were scrumptious and the breakfast offerings were delightful."

"Booked a table of 5 for my birthday dinner. We were promptly seated then immediately asked for drinks orders before even being offered a drinks menu or water. After we had ordered drinks we were being rushed into ordering some food, every two minutes different waiters coming and asking if we are ready to order (at least 7 times). After we did order and the food was brought out, we were then just forgotten about and nobody came over anymore to check if we needed any more drinks (4 out of 5 glasses were empty) or if the food was ok. (It was- but no one checked). After we had finished dining, we still had empty glasses and had to wait 20+ minutes until we eventually stopped a waiter walking past and asked if we could order more drinks. The drinks then took another 15 minutes to come. It was also very disappointing that although we had mentioned on the booking itself that it was for my birthday, there was no acknowledgement of this (I have been before and had received a plate with ‘happy birthday’ written on it in some kind of sauce with a sparkler). My sister even went to ask the woman working on the front desk and received a standoffish attitude back saying no. When the £235 bill came, it even listed ‘birthday plate £0.00’ on it!!! That really let the evening down. The interactions with the staff themselves were great, they were very polite and personable but the actual level of service of being rushed to order and then totally forgotten about really dampened what could have been a fantastic evening."

"I enjoyed the ambiance and decor of this restaurant. However, I was disappointed by the long wait time of over 45 minutes on a not very busy Tuesday evening. The quality of the sushi was decent but not outstanding, and the California rolls with crab sticks were particularly disappointing. Despite the wait, the service was good. I expected more from this restaurant based on other reviews. Overall, it was a dinner meal."

"We went for the all you can eat option, the food quality was good, food selection was also nice. My only concern is that there wasn't enough of a selection of raw fish for me, but enough for me not to be disappointed, and everything...was good for the hot selection, a couple of things could be improved on but nothing to complain about. When selecting the food you select what you like on the paper and put a number as an indicator in how much you would like. A small recommendation to the restaurant would be is when giving the food they should introduce the food so you know what you was eating, as we got some food we didn't order and we became full from things we wouldn't have necessarily have picked. Although great for a large group I think the experience would have been even better as a small group, less confusion and easier to order as it can be a little difficult if everyone likes something different, but its still a great experience. The staff was very friendly and made you feel very welcome, not at all rushed which is nice for an all you can eat. Would definitely be returning soon."

"Went for a birthday lunch with work friends. Had been recommended here many times but this was my first time of trying. It is a small place (only three tables) but it is super clean and the staff friendly. We ordered from the small but perfectly formed menu. I can't remember/pronounce the main dishes but they were in large bowls (like stews) with side dishes of rice, dumplings, prawn tempura. The food came very quickly and was absolutely delicious. I had the stew with spicy soup, seafood and silken toffee, kimchee and vegetables. The gyoza style dumplings were perfect with a slightly crispy shell. The meal was really reasonable at £45 for 3 and there was sooo much food. The portions are huge. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. We have vowed to make it a birthday tradition from now on. Luckily, we have another birthday in three weeks!! Can't wait to go back..."

"Ordered a take away direct from the website, expected a fantastic Thai curry but was massively disappointed. All I received was an email over an hour after ordering advising they had cancelled the order. This is despite confirmation of the order when placed. Phoned the restaurant and was basically told that the way it is, we have customers in the restaurant and you don’t matter! My advice is, don’t order takeaways from here as they don’t value your custom."

"The staff was very welcoming and nice, they didn't pressure me to order quickly or anything. The coffee shop itself is pretty small and cozy, there's no background music but it's a very relaxced atmosphere. The wifi is free. Service took 10 minutes for my food. They offer breakfast and lunch: open sandwiches, wraps, paninis, toasties, salads, they have vegan and vegetarian options. For 4,65 I had an avocado, tomato and mozzarella toastie. The avocado was a bit firm, but the bread was great, the cheese was well melted, the tomatoes were delicious, as were the salad and coleslaw. I'm very happy with my visit!"

"Whole Foods is a vegan haven! They not only stock a wide range of grains, dried/canned beans and pulses, nuts and seeds, they also sell a wide variety of meat/dairy substitutes. Whole Foods sell lots of vegan chocolate, cookies, ice cream, doughnuts ... you name it, as well as ready to go sandwiches, dessert pots and salads. There is an expansive salad bar, with a wide variety of veg/beans/seeds etc hot buffet, featuring dishes like vegan lasagne or vegan Shepard’s pie. There is also a machine which you can make your own nut butter in, not to mention an extensive array of produce, including “exotic” produce that’s difficult to get elsewhere like jackfruit. I thoroughly recommend you visit, but be warned...it’s very expensive, and it’s hard not to get over excited about all of the choice."

"I came here on Saturday evening. Expected the place to be very busy so I decided to book in advance. I've never been before so when we arrived I was actually surprised how small this place is. The place has long tables so be prepared to sit next to strangers. The staff is very friendly and they actually make the sushi front house so you can see their great skills. The food was very nice. I had the beef curry ramen with boiled egg. It was a half portion but I found it quite big. There was only one piece of beef which would be my complain about the ramen. There was also quite a lot of sweet corn which I would limit but other than that I liked how spicy and tasteful the ramen was. As for the...read more"

"This small and humble sushi bar has amazing, freshly prepared and beautifully presented sushi. It is mainly for takeout, but you can sit on window stools or at the bar stools and watch the world go by. Much better than supermarket prepacked sushi, and lots of variety. It would have been a 5-star review, but we have been disappointed a couple of times, finding it closed. We understand that the chef is the creative and hardworking genius behind the sushi bar, so if he is sick and needs a day off, there is no one to replace him. It's a shame, but he takes pride in what he does, and deserves his great reputation."

"Such dependably delicious food, has gradually become one of our favourite places to eat in Manchester. The summer rolls in particular have to be the best in the city. Pho is lovely, prices are reasonable, and service is always quick and friendly even when busy (which they usually are! Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch"

"Simply outstanding. The best tactic is to book to sit at the sushi bar upstairs, and then you can watch the chef prepare your dishes in front of you with fastidious perfection. A splendid range of classic sushi, nigiri and sashimi along with some more adventurous items. Service is prompt. Good range of quality sake but my friend who opted for wine was suitably impressed with that too. It's not cheap, but worth it, and up there with the best I've had in Tokyo."

"I’d wanted to visit here for a while but was a little disappointed. There seemed to be lots of staff but none were that attentive- except an older man who I assume was the owner. The food was ok but nothing special, my hot chocolate was delicious but the way it was served was in a weird cup and it really did not look as good as it tasted. I generally feel they could have done so much more."

"This restaurant is an outstanding option for vegans and vegetable lovers. Most dishes allow you to choose between options like vegetables, tofu, seitan, or chickpeas. The staff is attentive and will let you know if any dishes contain fish sauce, offering to leave it out if you prefer. There’s an impressive variety of dishes that I can't wait to try! The food is of excellent quality, the atmosphere is lovely, and they also offer takeaway."

"This weekend I went to my first 'All you can eat ' sushi for my friends birthday. I was a bit perplexed about the concept, the amount of food and the quality of the food we will get. I went with three of my friends who are addicted all you can eat sushi. I was the only one who didn 't know this restaurant in the group. The 'All you can eat ' menu is called Tasting menu in this restaurant. Far away from the usual Japanese chef 's special tasting menu, here you were offered two pieces of paper (see pictures below). The first one is a limited choice of sushi, sashimi, nigiri and three specials called 'bonus dishes '. You can order 5 of sushi sashimi and you can repeat these dishes 5 times...read more"

"Yo Sushi has definitely gone downhill from before. They removed a lot of the interesting features that made Yo Sushi stand out from the rest. The autonomy of the conveyor belt and the water tap at every table has now all gone. You must order via the QR code and pay before receiving it. In addition, the food was horrible. The ramen bowl cost £12.50 and there was not even a handful of noodles in there. The broth was overpowered by pieces of chilli with no real flavour. Some random things were just thrown in like pickled onion and seaweed which made the overall taste just really strange and unappetising. The sushi was less than substandard. The rice did not seem real and did not even look like rice. It was cold and mushy and the rice grains seemed to be blended all in one. It appeared that the sushi had been prepared 2 or 3 days ago. The next thing I noticed was the thinness of California rolls. It looked like the chef had taken 2 normal size rolls and chopped them in half to make four. Overall it was a very bad eating-out experience and confirmed my decision never eating at Yo Sushi again."
"Really amazing freshly sushi made to order with love and care for a great price. A very small place with nice staff which adds a sense of exclusivity when eating in. Brilliant covid protections in place. I would really recommend coming here with a booking; making sure to preorder what you would like on their website before. Some of the sushi have a little twist on them (oven baked). As a Japanese person this can sometimes not hit the mark at all, however this restaurant does it really well. I enjoyed everything that I ordered throughly, as the fried sushi was SO fresh and crispy. You also get free miso soup! 5 stars all the way, super tasty."
