"I have just returned from having afternoon tea, and was really looking forward to it. Sadly it was extremely disappointing. arrived at the restaurant, the staff were at the rear of the restaurant, and clearly saw us, but chose to ignore us, leaving us...standing for minutes, a simple recognition and I’ll be with you in a moment is just basic customer service. It all went downhill from there! We were early and asked to be seated, they couldn’t accommodate us in the restaurant, but could in the bar area, this wasn’t an issue, or so we thought! It then took a further minutes for anyone to give us a menu. We asked for tea, after minutes the tea arrived, we poured it and the milk was off, told the waitress, who said she would sort it out, instead of removing the cups and milk left it on the table. After another minutes, we had to put the tea and milk on the bar and ask the bar staff to replace the tea. Again after a wait it arrived. At this point we had been in the hotel for minutes. The food then arrived, finger sandwiches with extremely odd fillings. What should have been salmon, tasted like Shiphams paste. One with red onions and something that I couldn’t distinguish, the last was ham that was so thin and sparse you couldn’t taste it. We had a savoury scone and a fruit scone, no butter!!!! Asked the staff member at the bar, who said she would get some from the restaurant. She then continued to serve, clean and fold napkins for minutes. She then asked another passing staff member to get some butter. Yet another minutes wait. The sweet treats- pre made, hard pastry cases filled with a cream flavoured with mint and a “wild” strawberry a giant hard tasteless strawberry) a lemon meringue with basil flavour( not a snif or basil), a hard stale chocolate brownie, and a rhubarb trifle, this was a over sweet rhubarb, covered in tasteless custard and a crumble top??? Just all odd and nasty! Clearly no pastry chef in this hotel. I have to say I was expecting more from this afternoon tea, I have been to many in the local area and far flung! This one was one of the worst. The quality of the food was very poor and the customer service was appalling( some re-training on The basics, and the presence of a manger may be required)."

"since over 15 years sophies steakhouse visited and since the summer it was my first time. I went past the last weeks often to visit during the tireless veganuary, so I jumped on the opportunity to have a relaxed dinner there...with a friend on a Tuesday night. the dinner itself was the usual quality ingredients simple things made very good and fair value for the location as expected. I was disappointed, however, that I was at the reception of the restaurant for approx. 5 minutes were allowed to stand (besides a board that has asked customers to wait) where I was ignored, although I was passed on several times by the employees without gruß or recognition. it seems quite unnecessary that customers (also with reservations) on this wise on a Tuesday night around 19:30 clock, if there is a bar area on the immediate left side of the at the beginning that I quite comfortable my time in, until someone around me to put around me and safe enough, a small waiting snake formed behind us through the time we finally sit, although there is a series of open tables. my words very carefully to choose, I told the waiter (the manager) when he put us that as “a courteous world of advice” when they let customers wait at the entrance, they should be more of an effort to welcome them immediately, but this seemed to be taken as a personal affront and I was accused that it was quite hysterical, “he was being back in the moment when I met him during this already negotiated exchange we were asked twice (at this point) if we wanted to proceed with our booking by the waiter who obviously had decided that he would rather leave the partially empty restaurant. Despite every attempt to go, I didn't want my friend embarrassing, who visited the restaurant more regularly from late, so we tried to make the best of an otherwise insignificant dinner. within spores of playing the sacrifice, the waiter could explain that he was very stressed, as they were particularly short workers (the experience of my friend also from a previous visit) and fair to him seemed to be that he had a large area on his own. Of course, I have addressed any sympathy, and it is a management problem that must be solved especially for that of human, but why not just with an excuse or even only a recognition of feedback received, instead of expressing themselves and making absurd accusations if it receives polite and constructive feedback? would the device rather not mention a bad customer experience and decide to simply go into reasonable feedback? to his credit, the rest of the service was professional, but it is hard to do such a basic misunderstanding of the customer service in a time when they think restaurants should do everything in their power to customers again welcome after the break-up of the last 18 months. the whole episode is pretty bad at sophies I'm sorry to say and I won't be back in a hurry."

"I’ve been coming to this place for years having grown up in the area but I was hugely disappointed by my recent experience. We were a party of five family members meeting for a pre Christmas get together including my elderly parents (both in their mid/late 80s). We were told that our booking was for two hours yet we were seated 25 mins late, despite arriving on time, and then harassed to leave at the initial booking end time without any consideration to the fact that we were seated late. When we’d been sat for a few minutes the waiter came over and said that she’d need to take our order as the kitchen was closing soon. We ordered some extra drinks, when they arrived two of the three drinks were wrong. A Diet Coke instead of a Coke Zero, some random beer instead of a cider. My brother swapped his out at the bar but I just made do. There was no vegetarian/vegan main on the menu. I’ve been in pubs on the Outer Hebrides with a better vegetarian offer. This is Clapham. The waiter did acknowledge that it wasn’t good enough and initially pointed me towards the three cold veg/vegan starters but then said they could ask the chef if they could do me ‘something’. That ‘something’ turned out to be pasta and vegetables or risotto with broccoli etc. I opted for the risotto. What arrived was a very sad, grey, watery risotto with a few pieces of mushroom. We weren’t offered the dessert menu presumably because the kitchen had closed sometime previously. The pub was exceptionally busy and I could see the staff were doing their best in trying circumstances and were all very pleasant but why did the pub take our booking in the first instance? It seemed like a situation of trying to cram in as many bookings as possible in the lead up to Christmas to make as much money as possible without any consideration of the customer’s experience. This isn’t a cheap pub and what we had was a third rate experience instead of the joyful Christmas get together that we were all hoping for. There are plenty of other places to eat in Clapham and in future I will be doing just that."
