"waited almost ten minutes to be seated there were only 5 other people in the restaurant. the manageress was rude, couldn't be bothered and her clothing was filthy dirty. we were told to go to the counter when ready, we had to wait another five minutes before they had finished their chat in the kitchen, we could see them through the door window. our waitress was lovely but the manager was shocking and shouldn't be there. safe to say that we will not be going to this Toby again, we will travel to Braintree where the service is always great"

"Read the reviews. Turned up tonight for a drink with my partner to celebrate cear of cancer... No ice available to add to any drinks...Surely there's ice in the machine in restaurant area NO manager has just switched it off. SO SWICHT ON AGAIN. No...too much effort! ACTUALLY SUPRISED THEY HADN'T CLOSED EARLY WHICH HAPPENED IN PAST BEFORE AFTER DRIVING 40 MILES TO BE THERE TO MEET FRIENDS...This at 8.30 pm as tonight....This public house isn't a public house anymore... It's just a very poorly run carvery serving meals above all else, with subsidiary income from deliveroo, just eat etc...NO ATMOSPHERE WHATSOEVER..the area manager needs to see how other Toby's are ran. I regularly drop into multiple Toby"s around the the UK and NONE are so bad on service. This place desperately needs taking over by another enterprise!"

"Oh my ….. As soon as we was seated drinks order was taken which was good… greeted by waitress Georgia who’s uniform was one splash of gravy away from looking like she had just been hiking in the peaks… within seconds of sitting down with our carvery, we received a check back not even giving us time to attempted a second mouthful of food …..The mash had no taste, the roasts were very undercooked and the Yorkshire puddings made pancakes look like mountains…. Requested a booth but told there was non available( understand me it was busy) but then seated next to the kitchen where we could hear their music and the chefs swearing which was very off putting,not to mention the load squeak in the swinging door going into the kitchen….When ordering deserts, informed the waitress Georgia I was coeliac and can she point out what was gluten free… she came over told us she’s not telling us what was okay to eat and what do we expect “ we’re not a hotel”…, slammed the allergen matrix tablet on the table and walked off… Took 20 minutes to read through all the deserts to the point we asked can we have it take away… I asked can I get the custard separate and Georgia responded “ I might let the chef know but it depends what mood there in”….. Then waited another 25 minutes for our takeaway desserts even tho we asked for them cold …. The table of 4 who ordered after us revived their hot desserts before us …. Me and my partner both being from the catering and hospitality service was absolute appalled and will absolutely not be returning to this Tobys… I think we would have received better customer service at Karen’s Diner…."

"myself and my girlfriend visited this restaurant on Sunday the 23rd Aug. Considering how busy the place was, and noticeably some of the staff were a little stressed, they were also very accommodating. A group of gypsy travellers were in a section of the restaurant and were being quite noisy. The waiter with a neard apologised for the racket.Soon after we got out meals, a table was knocked over by one of the gypsies and so they were asked to leave. This man was very drunk and thus started being threatening to the staff. The staff were never rude, but firm in asking him to leave. He got very close to the gentleman with the beard and personally threatened him very nastily. It took 6 staff members to eventually persuade him to simply stagger out the door. I just wanted to congratulate the staff for their courage against someone who believes they are invincible and for the way they kept their cool. It was a tough and sensitive situation which could have almost definitely been a lot worse."

"Christmas dinner for 14 people. Camembert starter was nothing like a Camembert, was more like a suet pudding sitting in watery cheese. The carvery would of been ok but one person serving on his own was slow and food became lukewarm waiting. The puddings were a disaster apart from the cheesecake) brownies and Christmas pudding were so hard they were inedible and we were told we couldn’t change them. Didn’t expect a gourmet meal but for £58 pp, and it being Christmas Day it should of been better."

"My daughter and I decided to have a carvery after a long day but didn’t get what we expected at all . We go inside and order one regular size carvery and one kids size and go to get our food . We did find it weird that there was only 3 people in there but brushed it off thinking that it was the time we went there (4:00) . We wait to be served and look over at the meat and it look dry . Super dry . When the person infront was being served we could hear shouting and singing from the kitchen and from then we knew they were messing about instead of working. Gladly the people infront asked for the turkey to be changed otherwise that would have been bone dry too .When we finally got served we got our meat it was time for sides and veg . When we walked over I looked over at the veg and it looked like it was sitting there for the whole day … it was shrivelled up and it looked nasty. the Brussels sprouts were rock hard and the carrots looked dehydrated. My daughter had some cauliflower cheese and it just tastes watered down . We both agreed the potatoes looked burnt , gravy just tasted ew and was extremely lumpy .All the sides just looked old and sad and We were not impressed at all . We ate what edible which left us unsatisfied . This was a complete waste of money and left unhappy."

"Used to enjoy visiting this restaurant but not any more. Booked a table and had to wait to be shown to it after an eternity. No IPA despite it being on the bar, 'we dont have that down here '. Had an almost passable starter then went for the carvery. Had the meats I wanted then the veg, including the dried peas and on to the gravy. No 'famous ' gravy. By the time that had been replenished the food was cold. Never again. The place has been 'upgraded ' but it does not work"

"This was a typical institutional dining experience. The vegetables were cold, unappetizing, and flavorless. The meat and roast potatoes were decent, but the Yorkshire puddings dominated the plate, possibly limiting room for other items. The stuffing was a solid, grey lump. The pigs in blankets were tasty but came at an additional cost. It had been a while since I last visited a Toby Carvery, and I had hoped that the quality had improved. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before I give it another chance."

"The dining experience was pleasant, and the service was good—assuming you can get their attention. During my recent visit, there was only one waiter on duty. After being seated, we waited half an hour for the cook to bring our food. "went here for a meal on sunday 8th september, unfortunately upon visit being told we only had 45 minutes on our table even though we had informed the manager we wouldn’t have enough time as we had a disabled child with us and her response was that due to the high volume on a sunday that’s not her problem, we weren’t informed this upon booking, going for a roast once sat down after a few mouthful i discovered a snail in my roast dinner, the waitress was very apologetic and quickly removed the snail I understand things like this happen, however after speaking with another waitress she explained how before they’ve had half a dead mouse in there food before, this place needs seriously sorting out : won’t be returning to any toby carvery ever again !"

"The food was excellent! However, we made a reservation for 8:30 PM and weren’t aware that the kitchen would close by 9 PM. Upon arrival, we noticed the menu was limited, with no roast potatoes available and only 2 out of 4 meat options served. Unfortunately, we weren’t informed about the limited food supply before we ordered our drinks. Despite this, we were charged full price. However, I have no complaints about the quality of the food—it was delicious and packed with flavor. The staff was efficient enough, making it a decent stop for a quick meal. We definitely plan to return to try a wider selection, as many vegetable options were also unavailable. Service was a bit slow, even though the place was quiet at the end of their shift; the staff seemed preoccupied with cleaning the food stations, which were all tidied up by 8:45 PM."

"I visited this restaurant for my mother's birthday and I found the staff to be very efficient, especially considering it was a very busy evening. The pub's facilities and general areas were clean and well-maintained, and the staff was extremely friendly. My only suggestion for Toby Carvery as a chain would be to offer diners with dietary restrictions, such as myself with gluten intolerance, more options. It would be great to see more gluten-free dishes available, such as gluten-free Yorkshire puddings, wheat-free meat gravy, and hot puddings. I have noticed that the dessert options vary between different carveries, but it would have been nice to have some roasted parsnips and a greater variety of vegetables like sweetcorn and green beans available."

"I visited this Toby carvery twice recently on a Saturday afternoon. It was easy to drive to, with plenty of parking. In fact the car park, grounds are well planted with greenery. The outside of the building is in good condition, the interior design decor are tasteful, in good condition. The tables are quite well separated, comfortable seating. There is a small bar area, also outide area, probably nice in Summer. It was very easy to book a table on the website, both times i've been greeted quickly, in a friendly manner, quickly shown to our table. The Carvery I consider reasonably priced I think, at £8.29 on a Saturday, (I think it is a bit less on weekdays, a bit more on Sundays. plus drinks of course. We didn't need to queue for long to get our choice of Beef, Turkey, Gammon, Pork, plus a yorkshire, stuffing, then a range of veg. peas, green beans, carrots, roast potatoes, parsnips Plus nice gravy, sauces if required. (You can even go back for more veg gravy if you can manage any more !! Staff were all friendly helpful, the food was just a great roast meal !"

"I visited the restaurant for a carvery on Thursday this week, and honestly, it was nearly flawless! The food was hot, and the portion of meat was generous. I had requested a large portion but ended up receiving a regular one; however, it was quite loud, so I can overlook that, haha! After my positive experience, I returned on Saturday for breakfast. It was almost perfect, but not quite as impressive as the carvery. When I went up to the buffet, there were no breakfast Yorkshire puddings available, but I assume they were restocked fairly quickly. The same issue occurred with the mushrooms, which also limited my options. Additionally, I noticed the absence of scrambled eggs, even though it’s listed on the menu. I'm not sure if this is a recent change or if they no longer serve scrambled eggs for breakfast. Overall, I believe a rating of 4 out of 5 is very fair!"

"15 minute wait to be seated, 10 minute wait to have drinks order taken, another 10 spent in a short queue that wasn’t moving, food was absolutely delicious and I can’t fault it however I have never been served such a small amount of meat at any carvery, especially on a king size! I overheard other customers unhappy about the amount of meat they were served, Cardiff Gate is much better value for money. Then returned to the table to eat, enjoyed the food, quickly finished my drink but was not offered another one at any point during my visit. We eventually managed to flag down a waitress to order desserts, which came out incorrect 20 minutes later, however this was quickly rectified. Witnessed several customers having to ask a waitress to get a carver from the back, and shockingly saw a carver come out to carve meat for a staff members dinner, then return to the kitchen again leaving customers still queuing. Finally gave up waiting for a waitress to ask for the bill and went up to the bar to pay around 2 hours after we entered. Service from start to finish was lacking, especially at 3pm on a Thursday afternoon. I will stick to Cardiff Gate from now on; I'd hate to further inconvenience these staff."

"I am a vegan by necessity, not choice, and I was disappointed with the lack of options at this restaurant. The only vegan meal available was the Spinach Mushroom Pithivier, which was mostly pastry with very little spinach and no mushrooms. The accompanying peas were dry, the roast potatoes were hard, and the red cabbage was also dry. The veggie gravy was solid and cold. The seasonal crumble for dessert was tasty but overly sweet. The 0% alcohol beer was enjoyable. The total bill of £18.03 was too expensive for the poor quality of food. The staff were friendly and attentive, but overall, the food was awful."

"Shocked, this place is dire, tried to order a cheese and chitney yorkie wrap… sorry we dont have any, we inly have white bread ??? If i wanted a cheese sandwich i would have got one in tesco for £2, not pay nearly £6, so i passed on that, husband had gammon and mustard in dry white, stale bread and roast potatoes that were clearly left overs that had been microwaved, turning them into rubber balls. And a pot of brown gloop they called gravy, grandaughter had a dish of microwaved mac and cheese and a pot of baked bean mush. Disgusting is the only word to describe it. A pint of guiness was served in a glass that had been used for some sort of blackcurrant drink, it smelt and tasted of it. And to cap it off, there are no ladies toilets"

"I read all the reviews on other sites and they were very mixed. I came to Taunton Toby Carvery not long after it opened and was not impressed. Decided to try it again today as my parents had said it was nice.......they lied. The Beef was very fatty and over cooked with no taste what so ever, the plain mash was NOT plain, poor selection of veg, roast potatoes soggy and we arrived just as they opened the Carvery so it was all fresh. The refill drinks machine was flat and very syrupy. Staff looked fed up but our host Sam and the chef cutting the meat were very friendly and great to talk to. Unfortunately we will definitely not be returning. Worst Toby Carvery I've ever been to."
