"Beautiful interiors, great food menu. Unfortunately in our visit, we didn’t experience a great service level. There were only 3/4 other tables so it was very quiet. The staff didn’t seem very motivated or engaged in providing a good level of service very low energy. One dish was forgotten so one of our group had to wait while we ate our food two sides were also not made and we had to ask for them. I would visit again and hope for a better experience because the place itself is lovely and the food was great. It was really lacking in welcoming and friendly service. On another note, I would like to point out how dangerous it is to serve hot food and drinks when there is a baby in a highchair. On all occasions when food and drink was brought to the table the staff member leant over our baby with hot items we had to move the highchair out of the way. Instead, staff should be trained to give to the adults directly and avoid going over the head of a baby sitting at the end of the table. If an accident should occur due to carelessness like this it would be awful. It’s much easier and safer to give food and drink to the person directly at their seat. Please consider this!"

"I regularly drink and eat at Bell and the Dragon, but New Year’s Eve, like a number of other meals was nice atmosphere but very disappointing at the same time. They now charge £8 to £12+ for a glass of wine, and the quality of this has poor on two occasions. The bar is nice and friendly, but We recently asked for 2 glasses of Sauvignon and the lady in charge of the bar was surly and combative when I suggested that 2 glasses of wine for £24 was poor value and at that price they really should announce the price rather than just pour it and charge you . The new years eve dinner was imaginative but not well executed, with very slow serving times. The initial bottle of Chilean Sauvignon £31) was very poor and I returned it. I had monkfish which was served without any vegetables and I was told there weren’t any vegetables that could be bought additionally. For £60 a head meal I thought this was bottom quartile performance. Compare it with my recent experience in the Italian restaurant or the Red Lion in Odiham, or The Mill in North Warnborough all superb meals, better value), and I have to say the Bel and the Dragon has disappointed each time I have eaten there. I’d like to see Bel and the Dragon at top quartile, but it needs a top down change of approach to get there."

"Just had the most lovely cider and met the most wonderful, helpful folks. My sister and I had a wonderful walk from Free Folk to Kingsclere exploring Watership Down and the wonderful staff at the bar saved us some walking and helped us find a ride back! "Warm friendly welcome, table ready prepared for us. Excellent food, the choice was from an extensive menu and all the food was lovely and well presented. Nice atmosphere in the dining room, which was busy. The only slight drawback was the service....although we realised that some guests (ourselves included actually) were known to the staff who chatted to them... we would have appreciated this rather more if we had been given our drinks first! But the quality of all the food was really very good indeed, and no doubt we shall return again soon."

"This restaurant has deteriorated significantly since the new owners took over. The serving staff is lazy and clumsy, resulting in slow service. Requesting more bread took 15 minutes, causing the cooked Brie to turn hard. The shared steak was lukewarm and the triple cooked potatoes were hard. Despite being a longtime patron, I will not be returning after my recent disappointing experiences."

"I made a reservation for my birthday with my partner, and we really enjoyed our meal. I was unaware that Tuesdays are tapas night, as I was excited to try the lobster I had seen in the photos. I plan to return on a Saturday, hoping to find more seafood options. For our starters, we had clams, pork, and mushrooms, all of which were great. The sweet potato fries were delicious, and there are plenty of vegetarian options available. We dined in and received good service."

"We only recently started going to the Piper as it's under new management. The new landlords are lovely. They made us feel very welcome and the atmosphere is great. The food was excellent value for money and plenty of it! We will now be going on a regular basis. I know it had a bad name in the past but I would encourage anyone to give it another try. It's amazing how new management can make such a difference in the space of 3 weeks!"

"to the seen, we in the week before the departure of the chance for a Sunday roast, only to say that the restaurant was fully booked! we thought that would be a good sign, so booked for the next Sunday and welcomed by a friendly staff and great selection of weep always a good start. the menu was limited, perfect for our requirements. the roasts are beautiful and taste like a real home cooked dinner exactly what was necessary. my only critique is the size of the parts that are these on the small side and we are away feeling hungry! they can order additional pages that helps, but this pushes the roasts at £20 per head expensive for what it is and more than the best steak house on the whole way. would come back, but would like to see larger portions, a few more seasoned and happy!"

"It was disappointing that the otherwise delicious vegan chickpea burger could only be served in a brioche bun that contained both eggs and milk, which meant I couldn't have the sandwich. As a result, I paid the same price for just one burger, without any additional salad and no alternative bread option offered. The waitress mentioned a different type of bread roll, but didn't seem very enthusiastic about me trying it, so I decided to go without. Overall, I found my meal to be pleasant but not particularly great. The other dishes at the restaurant were good, but as a vegan, I felt like I was missing out once again. It would be nice to see more vegan options that cater to different dietary needs."

"The food was really nice and the staff were very friendly and the interior is beautiful. Only issue is if you go on a Friday or Saturday night expect a wait on the food. We went Saturday evening and were waiting quite a while (an hourish) . The place was full to the brim so it was understandable. We where also offered a free round of drinks for the wait too . The food was worth the wait however and I can't wait to go again!"

"Were not greeted when we entered, even though someone was behind bar. He didn’t even look at us We Asked about food were told to take any 2 seat table. Not offered menus so got them ourselves, then waitress came over gave us correct menus. Ordered food wine, waitress was very polite friendly. Food came but Steak was very chewy No atmosphere, saw no one else eating, another 2 couples drinking. We were offered sweet menu, were going to ordered but were told at 9pm coffee machine was off so no coffee available. I say told but really we were grunted at! so didn’t have sweet as we wanted it with coffee, not much to expect after eating a meal! Overall very disappointing anniversary dinner. The place was very quiet. Maybe train your staff to be a bit more friendly after all it is the service industry you work in people just expect when spending hard earned cash, a pleasant evening out with a nice meal a friendly welcome. Unfortunately we got none of the above! So Will not return! You would have thought in today’s financial situation these places would be crying out for local support but when you get treated like they can’t be bothered to serve you then they don’t deserve our custom."

"Located on the A350, this pub boasts a great location with a spacious car park and ample seating inside. The staff are friendly and attentive. However, we were disappointed with the food we ordered. My wife's mac n cheese was small, cold, and lacking in flavor. My club sandwich was served cold, with barely cooked bacon. Overall, we were unsatisfied with our experience and will not be returning."

"This is one of my favorite places, one of those you never get sick of going over and over. Maybe because I'm italian and sometimes I want to feel like home and taste some of the flavours that I miss so much FOOD: Simple. "My wife and I had a fantastic dinner in the kitchen. I loved the thought that went into the options on the menu; and the execution of the dishes was top notch. In addition, Sarah Daisy gave us a nice personal table service that matched the quality of the food. When we stayed overnight, the next morning we had a breakfast that was not disappointed. A wide selection of options on the cold buffet and the same with the menu where you can order certain dishes. Overall, really happy and would highly recommend. Can't wait to come back and see what options are on the menu when we come back."

"I have been here before with my family to celebrate a birthday and we could not fault a thing. Decided to treat my friend to a meal out and again the food and service were excellent. "We came here for Sunday lunch with friends last year and enjoyed it so much that we decided to go for my husband's birthday treat and we were not disappointed. The weather was perfect so after a warm welcome we enjoyed a pre lunch drink on the terrace, admiring the roses, while we chose from the menu. £32 for 5 courses was superb value. My hot smoked salmon starter with avocado, quail eggs and lemon dressing was generous and very tasty and my husband really enjoyed his home smoked duck breast with boozy sultanas. The tomato soup was home made and just right, and my raspberry sorbet cleansed my palate. Our roast beef and roast lamb were both very tender, bought from the local butcher in Kirkbymoorside I was told, and there was a generous selection of vegetables. We were both offered extra Yorkshire puddings but declined since we wanted a dessert! The gooseberry fool wasn't too sweet and my husband was very pleased to find fruit salad on the menu, which came with cream or ice cream (various flavours). On top of all this we were then offered a selection of the excellent cheeseboard too! The wine list is good and I enjoyed a dessert wine from a choice of 5 or 6. Finally we had coffee back on the terrace. Throughout our meal the service was exemplary prompt without being over attentive. A perfect meal. I'm planning to return to try afternoon tea next!"

However, the tables left much to be desired, as they were not very clean, with crumbs and dirt lingering in the crevices. Additionally, the bread used for my sandwich was overly dry, and the fish accompanying my fries appeared to be rusting."

"What a wonderful time we had. It was my partners birthday which the staff did not until after we arrived but they produced a small cake with a candle. We were offered seconds of beef and Yorkshire puddings and cheese to follow our dessert. The meal was delicious, the staff achieved a perfect balance between attentiveness and not being pushy, the wine was excellent and the surroundings were so comfortable and relaxed. We will definitely be back. Many, many thanks."

"The food was good but……. Service was awful, ordered wine and it was basically dumped at the bottom of our table not even the top taken off ! Pizza was good also the burger, was a chore for the waitress to get us any sauces. When we had finished we were asked can I take your plates, No can I offer you a dessert, coffee nothing. After 20 mins we got up and had to ask for our bill at the main desk, again a chore for the member of staff to have to get our bill.what a shame as it could be a very high rating place to eat."
