"we came for a meal on Saturday 11 December 21. super friendly staff . fabulous eating . very nice atmosphere felt like home. but unfortunately we had another visit on Tuesday, 1st March at a week night for my sisters birthday and unfortunately not get the same service. the only employee who seemed to be there did not even realize that we went in the rest and ask if we have a table. fair enough that he might have been short, a nice hallo would not be with them at a moment from a miss. I went by to say that we have a table under the name lisa. only to see no answer. hugh. the waiter spoke every English that I wandered. after, as always stood at the door, the waiter went over a table still no eye contact and pulled two tables apart. because he would never have asked that I would not get the chance to say was for four people. birthday boy was in traffic. when I said I'm sorry that there are 4 of us, he went on to put tables back together, no contact. and went away, after 10mins of satt wait he brought 2 menus my sister birthday girls then showed up and we sat on the look for 2 menus between us all four. 20mins later no drinks or even asked if we want. again, if hed only said that I'm sorry that I'm extremely busy if we were a.s.a.p with them, we would think differently, I went over the bar after more menus and asked if we should order from the bar. he said he was overheared. we all felt a little annoyed by his attitude, a very anxious, he thought he worked in a flat? it looked more like that. it pampered the night, my sister has only booked there because of the beautiful contributors from December on my birthday so disappointed that the least say. I will add, eating was fabulous so compliments to the cook. the only reason for 4 stars."

"I 'm sure you all get pretty bored of me saying so, but for me hotel dining is the most satisfying. Unlike stepping into one of Soho 's latest ventures, hotel staff generally seem to care that little bit more about the customer. Perhaps It 's the higher level of training from the driven and meticulous hospitality staff or simply just because these people enjoy what they do who knows. Personally i think it has something to do with working in a hotel being able to offer more potential it can be a job for life. A lot of people living in London see working in a restaurant as a job which only pays for the interim before they start their 'real job '. But working in a restaurant can open lots of doors, and be one of the most satisfying experiences you could ever aspire for. You get to meet interesting people, exuberant and flamboyant characters, but also get to carry that pride knowing you can do something most people can 't creating an experience that is never forgotten. Amaranto is an Italian restaurant which utilises lots of British ingredients, but splits its menu down the middle balancing out classic regional Italian dishes against British inspired ones. Up until recently(ish) the kitchen was run by Davide Degiovanni who has since gone on to work for Gordon Ramsay 's Union Street Cafe in Borough. Who 's running the kitchen here now at Amaranto is a mystery to me. Out from the bar arrived my smokey negroni which was outstanding and completely unexpected. The incredibly well blended negroni was accompanied by a flask of smoky lapsang souchong tea which wafted across and into the glass infusing it. After finishing the strong, bitter and seductive drink you 're encourage to strain and pour the remaining tea into the glass and mix with any remaining drops and sip slowly. A lovely idea. I 'll be coming back for many more of these soon. The decor inside Amaranto comes across slightly oriental in design, which looked nice but isn 't really reflective against the food. In the corner of the dining room i spotted a large trolley with an abundance of bread. Then suddenly a huge selection arrived at our table. All lovely, well made and great for dipping into the salt and olive oil accompaniments. I 'm a stickler for breads and these weren 't bad at all. Although perhaps i over indulged a little early and filled myself up somewhat even before starters arrived. Stracciatella, which is an egg drop soup had the unusual mix of a gazpacho style tomato soup, olives and basil leaves. In all honestly I 'd not eaten stracciatella before and had no idea what to expect but wow, what had i been missing. Incredibly fresh, punchy flavours, smoothly textured and a portion size to match, which left just enough spoonfuls of this gorgeous stracciatella to help satisfy our moreish cravings for it we developed. If you 've yet to experience stracciatella then i urge you to seek it out, you 'll be pleasantly surprised. What is it these days with restaurants putting fried duck eggs on their menus. Three years or so ago i only ever saw them in top restaurants, now nearly everyone has it on their menus. And I 'm not complaining. Here the dish was a nice attempt, but on the whole needed a little reworking. The egg was well cooked, but its crumb too plain and tasteless. Parmesan fondue on the side had good flavour but the consistency wasn 't quite right and a little lumpy. Grilled asparagus on the other hand was lovely. As i said, everything needed a little more execution and care. Duck breast with crushed potatoes, courgette flowers, fried courgettes, puree and jus arrived next. The duck was nicely cooked, and the highlight of the dish (as it should be). The courgette flower was covered in some hideous batter, but was stuffed with an unbelievably tasty orange cream. The jus was nice and the puree was good, but needed to be smoother. There was definitely some effort and serious thinking behind this dish, but again the execution and care felt as if it was missing in places. Our best dish of the evening was without a doubt, the pasta course. Parsley scented tonnarelli pasta with chunks of cod, black olive and a caper ragout. The actual pasta needed thirty seconds more in the pan but otherwise this could have been near perfect. The sauce had so much depth and flavour while little chunks of cod sporadically appeared in the mouth and those salty capers and black olives left for a tantalising affair. Just getting that pasta right every time is key some people can be nothing near as forgiving as i can (believe it or not). I 've never quite been a fan of panna cotta and I 'm not entirely sure why. Maybe It 's the lack of flavour I 've experienced or watery textures either way I 'm just not crazy about it. Here i actually did enjoy it, but wasn 't captivated or blown away which still remains a problem for me ever falling in love with this ever popular dessert. Served with roasted peaches, peach juice and a peach sorbet it became quickly apparent that something on this plate was going to be much easier to put away than others. Peach may be perhaps one of my favourite fruits and Amaranto managed to keep that love affair ongoing. Petit fours were a mixture of sugar jellies, deliciously dark truffles and some mini meringues which were full of sugar and had no flavour. A minor thing which could easily be rectified. Hotel dining is still my favourite ways to dine and that won 't be changing anytime soon. Amaranto may have lost its well known stellar CV holding chef but right now it still has a very capable one instead. Yes the food needs a little more work and care but its heading in the right direction, and so much so i can 't think of a single reason not to return when in the area. The cocktails are a reason to go back alone, that smoky negroni can never be forgotten."

"We like tea and cake. No doubt about it. We've taken Afternoon Tea in all sorts of places. The most prestigious hotel in London yes. One of the most popular English stately homes yes. A brasserie in a provincial English city yes....But the best Afternoon Tea of all? You have to go to Wigan for that! Admittedly the posh end of Wigan Mrs Lyon's Tea Room in Standish. It's delightfully homely, with a choice of teas; a choice of freshly made sandwiches; scones still warm from the oven, and a choice of cake ranging from the traditional Victoria sponge to interesting concoctions involving Ferrero Rocher. Superb. Three of us met for tea at Mrs Lyon's everything was perfectly chintz. In a good way. If I was entertaining visitors from abroad, Mrs Lyon's is the kind of place I'd take them to, to prove that whatever the country is going through there are still little pockets of sanity! The service was excellent: attentive but not intrusive. Extra clotted cream to go with the scones? Certainly! At the end of our visit when I paid at the counter, I congratulated the two young women who had served us: it was an excellent tea. Hearing the praise, another lady popped her head through the serving hatch from the kitchen (Was this The Real Mrs Lyon She beamed! As did a young lad who was assisting her. If this was a family operation, it was even more praiseworthy. Of all the places in England I've had Afternoon Tea, this is the one that I will return to. Long may they continue!"

"Having visited Dunsley Hall on several previous occasions for Afternoon Tea and being very pleased with the standard of the teas provided, this was my first time as a coeliac requiring the a Gluten Free Afternoon Tea option which is offered by the Hotel. It was VERY disappointing. Bread on the sandwiches was not great. The cakes were all shop bought i.e 1 shortbread biscuit, 1 Mrs Crimbles Chocolate coated macaroon, 1 petit frozen chocolate eclair and 1 frozen mini chocolate coated ring doughnut, The plain scone possibly the only homemade item of the sweet items) was tasteless rubbery in texture and the cream Jam accompaniments made little improvement. In short, the gluten free tea was very disappointing and poor value for money. I would like to say that my companions had better luck with their regular teas but unfortunately neither were they to the usual standard. The Panacotta was VERY firm and not pleasant to eat and very much doubt it had been made that day, and again, their scones were not to the usual standard. Perhaps the fact that we visited on a Monday afternoon only one other table of customers who were leaving as we arrived) rather than on a weekend may have had some bearing on the quality, but this wasn 't an impromptu visit, it had been pre-booked a couple of weeks earlier as a birthday celebration, so really no excuse for being served below par food. The serving staff were very pleasant but were also being required to attend to a large private event in the Conservatory and thus were not as readily attentive as on previous visits. The hotel itself is a lovely place with beautiful gardens but will we go for Afternoon Tea again?Probably not."

"A friend and I attended the number twelve restaurant for afternoon tea today. I had stated in email correspondence, twice, that we would like the vegan afternoon tea, as the buy a gift voucher was for vegan afternoon tea. We arrived and were seated quickly. About 10 minutes after arriving we were told we had not made a request for vegan afternoon tea. I explained the buy a gift voucher was for vegan afternoon tea and that I had also stated in my last email to them that we would like it to be vegan. I attempted to show the email but the server was not interested. We were told we could still have the vegan afternoon tea but there would be a 20 minute wait for the scones to bake. I said that was fine and we were told we could have our drinks in the meantime which we accepted. We were given dairy milk and I had to ask for soya milk, despite the fact they knew we were having vegan afternoon tea. Over half an hour went by and we still didn 't have our food. The restaurant was not very busy from what we could see there were only three other small parties who all received their food a good while before us, despite us arriving before them. A server came and told us they had checked in the kitchen and the scones still were not ready but said we could have the sandwiches and cakes in the meantime. We agreed to this due to the health concerns of my friend, and I again double checked it would be vegan as I am vegan myself. We were given our afternoon tea and assured it was all vegan. There was a single cheese and tomato sandwich on the plate which we found strange as there were two of each of the others. My friend (who is not vegan) tried it and said it tasted like dairy cheese. I asked the server in the restaurant to check if it was dairy, they went to the kitchen and returned with two cucumber sandwiches. They said 'these are cucumber sandwiches, they 're vegan ' and walked away. I said 'excuse me, was the cheese not vegan then? ' and they said 'no ' and walked away again. We didn 't receive an apology. I emailed the restaurant about the service we received but have not had a response over a week later so do not expect to hear now. We have taken it further and contacted buy a gift. I do not recommend going to this restaurant. I feel like the staff didn 't care, and didn 't even have the grace to apologise to us. I just hope this doesn 't happen to someone with an allergy."
