"This restaurant is an expensive hobby, the best part of £300 for two with wine and service. I do sometimes wonder if we are paying to be there to please the chef or the chef is there to please us judging from the rules we should observe on the website. Luckily gone are the days of only taking cash, which sometimes necessitated a visit to the cash point at the end of the evening. However I digress, cards are obviously accepted now. The room is stark and soulless, more canteen than high end restaurant. On leaving, the feeling is more endurance rather than warmth, joy and money well spent. There is one menu, no choice, start time 7.00 p.m., arrive 6.45 p.m. be there or be square! Every one served the same course at the same time. To be honest I am not a massive fan of just warm food, which happens if your table is not first out of the kitchen. For me the big sin, no bread …….. Surely a restaurant like this should be able to present some sort of warm interesting bread. To be honest even just normal French bread would have been nice. Two amuse bouche were good and nicely presented as were the hake, and gilt edged bream dishes. The monkfish, a meaty fish, was rather tough with a green ravioli and green sauce which wasn’t for me. Perhaps a cerviche or grilled langustine as one of the courses would be a suggestion and also a change of texture. There were three puddings all very nice but perhaps a cheese course and two puddings may be preferable. To b honest, not a very relaxing experience!"

"So it’s my birthday and I’m looking for a family birthday meal for 5 people, 2 of whom are vegan and 2 of whom are vegetarian. Unfortunately I chose The 78. Where do I start? If you are looking for a bar job where you get paid for sitting chatting to your fellow staff members and don’t need to attend to/interact with the customers then this place is for you. I can only apologise for repeatedly interrupting the staff to ask for some service during our meal. How rude of me. We had to ask if it was table service or not as no one came near us after we were seated to take a drink or food order. The place was very quiet no surprise in retrospect. After our food, again no staff could bear to leave their conversations and venture near us. Don’t worry guys, we’ll leave our seats again to come to you sorry to interrupt your chat again. Even getting out of the place was difficult as we had to again seek staff attention to obtain the bill and after receiving it I had to go to the bar again as no one was coming over to let me pay. Don’t bother coming to my table with a card machine I’ll come to the bar and pay so you don’t have to move. When paying I awaited for the usual courtesy of ‘How was you meal?’ or ‘Was everything ok?’ Not a chance! So here’s my feedback whether you like it or not. I hope this review saves other people from suffering the same experiences that we had. Oh yes and the toilets are like something out of a 1970s football ground perhaps that was the last time they were cleaned. Of course the Ladies toilet didn’t work much like the staff. So someone came up with the bright idea that ladies would share the gents toilet. Come on ladies fancy watching some guy with his bits hanging out while you use the cubicle with the toilet seat hanging off and try to avoid touching anything. Is this even legal? So thanks to The 78 for giving me an unforgettable Birthday Meal with my family. Unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. We won’t be back and I would urge people to await this place being closed down and refurbished by the next owner. It looks like the closing down process has already started and the staff have definitely stopped working."

"After being to other Stable branches in the South West, our local Stable has remained a disappointment unfortunately. Our visits have declined based on the quality of food and standard of service. We opt for the vegan and gluten free choices and they do have a great variety of choices. However, I am not sure what ingredients specifically cause a problem, but we always walk away as a family with an unpleasant feeling in our stomachs. I think it maybe the vegan cheese, but we cannot be sure. Other vegan pizza's from other restaurants don't present this as a problem so it's unique to The Stable in our personal experience. Their vegan mozzarella is not the nicest tasting either to be honest. This Stable, as the others we have visited nail the cider, without a doubt it's the best place for a great range of quality ciders, hands down. Service is a problem in our experience and other people we have spoken with agree they have had similar experiences. Regardless of how busy The Stable is, they seem to be very distracted and we always get the impression they are trying to avoid us as customers. We always feel uncomfortable trying to get the staffs attention and it feels like we're actually an inconvenience to them. I have been in a few times for a quick pint and simply walked out again after staff looked at me without acknowledgement and then walked off. However, when you eventually do get the full attention of the staff they are very friendly and polite. So, it's a confusing and perplexing situation. But after so many visits, this is consistent and becomes too much of a unpleasant experience to want to expose ourselves to again."

"My partner and I decided to revisit here as we had been about a month ago and the food was very impressive in particular the pate and lasagne were exceptional last time. So we thought we would go again on Friday wish we hadn’t! We sat in the restaurant area on a small table for 2 by the window. The tables were a little sticky. So we wiped them with a napkin. We were told by a young pretty waitress that the menu was currently reduced in size. Limiting our options. It was fairly busy which was a good sign. I ordered the hunters chicken and my partner ordered a burger. We waited about 25 minutes which wasn’t too bad. The food arrived and the chicken was soo dry it had been hidden by the sauce and cheese. But had been cooked to well if I say an inch of its life it would be an understatement. The salad was warm and wilted. My partners burger was burnt on one side and the other side looked under done. The bun itself was also burnt and had then been blatantly scraped but the cheese was covered in little black burnt pieces. We were about to complain when an argument broke out between an older chef with a beard and glasses and a bald man in a white shirt through the kitchen hatch. A few other customers looked over aswell. At this point we had seen enough and just paid our bill and left. We said afterwards it was such a shame as the previous time had been soo good. But may leave it a long while before we give it another chance."
