"Lovely food as always. Very behind the times with the Alcohol Free offerings though. Only Becks Blue available. There is a plethora of good AF alternatives on the market these days including a huge number of good AF beers, AF gin (Gordon's and tanqueray both do this) and more.. Not everyone wants alcohol and I don't want a kids drink please"

"After living in Hornchurch all my life, I decided to try the Mandarin Palace with a friend on a Friday night. We chose the set menu and asked one of the servers if we were able to swap some of the dishes on the menu (for other items which were similar in price) and she said that this was not a problem. When another server came over to take the order we were told that we were only able to swap 2 dishes. The starters were good (satay chicken, seaweed, ribs, spring roll, sesame prawn toast) and so were the duck and pancakes.. the main dishes did not live up to the same expectations sadly. The dessert from the set menu was fruit and a blob of vanilla ice cream and we asked if we could swap this dessert for just some ice cream but this was refused. It was tinned fruit and nothing special, cheap vanilla ice cream with some squirty strawberry sauce on top, surrounded by a grape, a clementine segment and a small square of melon. I did not see how two scoops of chocolate ice cream would have been an issue. It is very clear on the menu that a discretionary 10% is added to the bill, however we did not wish to pay the service charge as we felt that the service was not anything special (and the fact we weren’t able to swap tinned fruit for some ice cream also) and we had already paid enough for our food as it was more expensive than other places in the area. When the bill arrived, I advised that we are just going to pay for our food/drinks and we do not wish to pay for the service charge and the server asked what the problem was. I said that there wasn’t a problem, it is because it is discretionary. She said that she would have to get the manager and walked off. When she returned with the amended bill, this was in a stroppy manner, nothing further was said and we were made to feel unwelcome. We paid the bill and when we left no one said goodbye. We will not be returning sadly. Attitude around a discretionary service charge, when the food is expensive already and average is not really acceptable. Would maybe expect this charge from a restaurant in central London, but not from a local Chinese."

"Visit today was good. Got there for opening time but couldn't believe it was our 5 and about another 10 people. Was shocked for a Saturday, but it could be the time of year. Food was nice fresh apart from Mini spring rolls, and the coke was terrible worse than Pepsi. More like rola cola your mum used to buy at the supermarket. Hence, the 4 stars and not 5. Many cameras gave the impression they had a lot of trouble there. There were actually more cameras than the last time I was there. Staff were pleasant, not going out of their way but not meithering you either. I prefer this. Iv never had the experience that some others have had, but I do give myself at least an hour to eat before closing because I don't need to be babysat and understand what closing time means. So at 12 today when they opened I was there. I gave myself plenty of time and some extra time if needed before they closed again at 2.30. Price is £10.80 for adults and about 4 quid for children. Not everything is available for lunch. I'm not sure of night time price."

"The dining experience was lovely and the service was excellent. The owner personally sat with us since it was our first visit, recommended some dishes, shared the history of the restaurant, and even offered us complimentary drinks as a welcome gesture. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

"We found this place whilst searching for a Chinese whilst staying in Chester, we ordered the £22 banquet, the C&Sweetxorn soup was nice and the prawn toast was lovely on the starters my husband loved the ribs and the spring rolls to. The duck was amazing so tasty ! And then came the mains ….. I ordered salt and pepper king prawns wow they was delicious , my husband had special curry again gorgeous but best of all which my husband still can’t get over was the chips !! Yes the chips they were home cooked fresh chips and took my husband back to his childhood , he hasn’t had chips that good in 30 years a little nostalgia from grandmas chips : . Well done food was lovely if I could say one development area it would be the table it wasn’t placed in the best area of the dining room and felt a little out of the way, if in the area will defo be back"

"We called in here late on a Saturday evening before returning home. We fancied Chinese so headed to Chinatown and chose this place partly because the menu looked a bit more interesting and partly because it had Chinese people eating it rather than tourists which is usually a good sign. There seemed to be an awful lot of staff for the number of customers and they were reasonably attentive. The decor is VERY basic and reminded me a little of school canteens. Boxes were piled everywhere and everything by way of kitchen tools and accessories seemed to be on display. To be fair the food was very good indeed. Freshly cooked and huge portions, without a hefty price tag. For vegans there are plenty of veggie options too. The service however, was just a bit weird. Staff were just a bit too casual. The food was brought out on a piece meal basis so some of our party had to start without others to prevent food going cold. When we asked for some leftover rice to be boxed up, we were given the box and expected to do it ourselves. It was okay. Just a bit odd. BUT... I would go there again for the food alone. I suspect if you got to know some of the staff they would look after you a bit better. It should be the other way round really."

"We have visited Tai Pan now Tai Wu many times before. We love the food. Our children has come back for Easter and hence we decided to have lunch at Tai Wu, Manchester, Sunday the 7th of April. I did call up to book a place but was told that just turn up. So I thought, it must be quiet. Wrong!! Massive queue. Nevermind, you have to wait for good things in life. So we settled down to wait and eventually was led to a table. Wait for it, Table 13! Maybe that was an omen. We ordered drinks, starters and main course all at the same time. Drinks and starters were served in due course and then there was a long gap. We had some left overs from starters, seeing that the waitress gave us some take away boxes, which we thought were strange as usually that is given at the end of the meal. Still waiting. It was very difficult to get any attention of any of the waiters but eventually caught the eye of one. We explained that we have not been served the mains. It was getting late and we did not want to get caught up in the football traffic as Man Utd was playing Liverpool. The waiter apologised and we asked to take away the main course rather than eating there. That spoiled the whole experience. On top of that we had to pay for the service charge as well which should have been waived. I have emailed the restaurant about our experience but did not receive any acknowledgement and hence putting it out here. However, the food remains excellent and up until the mains, we were having a good time. Hopefully, this is a one off!"

"16 of us pre booked for a works party, early evening. We’d booked 8 weeks in advance (we struggled to find a restaurant in Chinatown large enough to accommodate us) and paid a deposit. Firstly, we phoned to say we were going to be an hour later than planned the restaurant was fine with this. Secondly, we moved the tables around and the waiting staff got a bit grumpy (fair enough). Once we explained what we wanted to do, the staff were super helpful and suggested (and moved the tables and chairs) to a more efficient way of achieving the goal. Service was great – really efficient and helpful. Granted, service was not always with a smile, but I think that’s just the way the restaurant worked. We had a bit of an accident and spilled drinks (beer and boiling hot tea) over an innocent member of our company (luckily he mostly dodged the boiling drink). The staff were amazing and cleared this away really efficiently. I had a word with the head waiter afterwards and had a good joke about it – he was great when you spoke to him directly, he’s seen it all before. Food – really tasty. We were not expecting too much, but the roast crispy duck was great (lovely and crispy), the squid was amazing. Everything we had was delicious (set menu for 6 £39 I think). The rice was excellent, so many juicy prawns and meat bits. Even the stir fried veg was great. One of our party moaned it lacked flavour – they were wrong – I would have loved to get some to takeaway (with a meat dish too of course). Conclusion – great service, great food, prices decent. What’s not to like? I will be going back (probably by myself so I can choose what I want all to myself). Wish I’d had the crispy chilli beef, looks good. Thanks Golden Phoenix!"

"absolutely fantastic! a bit skeptical order here because my family used to order Chinese farewell to other Chinese restaurant, but yesterday they let me do the task of ordering how we guests come to read good reviews from this restaurant, I thought I would go it, I am asian and I am restless about Asian food. I called, the other one was really nice. retrieved eating, and was greeted with a beautiful welcoming atmosphere, restaurant was nice and packed! went home, had dinner and all agreed that it was much better than what we had in other Chinese takeaways. I don't normally leave any comments, but I thought that's my way to thank trongs for giving me the closest best Asian food I could approach. everything was simply divine, fruitful, priced and service-wise. plan to celebrate our special occasion in this restaurant. will definitely be our Chinese departure from now on. highly recommended!"

"I don’t think we have visited since before lockdown and as we sat down I did not recognise any of the previous friendly faces. Surveyed the menu and recognised a huge increase in prices. Drinks are a priority here especially as they are charged so high. Small bottle of tiger £3.90! Coke £2.85. Waiter recognised we needed another beer and couldn’t get us another one fast enough. Yet when I asked for more plum sauce he made a sarcastic comment. From then I should have challenged his attitude. But it’s not why we were out. To challenge someone on their cheeky attitude. Anyway…. The veggie duck is now £12.50!!! Portion size reduced. You can buy a whole packet of the mock duck for £2.99 in the frozen section at the Chinese supermarket. It is served with the most measly portion of spring onion and cucumber so asked for more. They did not like that. Must cost all of 10 pence. The veggie satay is different. Zero flavour. £9??? Mushroom, pepper and onion on a skewer. As for the salt chilli ribs. There is no way you could share that portion. It used to be much bigger…. Regulars frequent this place and they are welcomed like royalty. If they don’t know you, they really don’t care. Small portions. High prices. Surly unwelcome service. We decided to get the bill and leave. If you are looking for a rip off joint this is it."

"Had a salmon teriyaki and some chicken wings. It was just ok, found the pricing was abit high for what you get. Chicken wings were bland, they should include a sauce with it not these random chilli flakes and Edamame beans and sweetcorn. I've had better."
"The food was OK but the service was shocking. We were stared at throughout our meal like we were being watched and yet still had to ask for more water or sauce even though they could see we 'd run out. Because of the poor service we covered the bill and a little more and when the waiter realised we weren 't going to cover the £11 discretionary tip he said we weren 't paying enough to which we explained it 's discretionary but also we were actually tipping some and he started to insult us and say we weren 't welcome back again. I 've never known anything like it. Plenty of options for Chinese food in China Town so just avoid this one!"

"The peking duck was excellent almost matching what I would have in Beijing. Daily soup was fantastic although feeling that it's not worth the price paid (their restaurant next door serves the daily soup at half the price per head and it's just as good). Vegetable was a standard affair, with the tofu a bit of a twist from the normal version they serve next door."

"Visited on a Saturday evening with two elderly neighbours. As one of them sat down on a chair it was so rough it sliced into his finger and bled really badly. The waitress brought him the tiniest plaster, laughed and said Please don't die'!!!!This chair should have been taken away and replaced immediately, and my neighbour should have been treated with concern and respect, but sadly not. The food was lovely, but the response from the staff at this incident was totally unacceptable"

"We had a most wonderful evening here with friends for a birthday meal. I must admit I had not known about this restaurant prior to this visit. On arrival we received a lovely friendly welcome and were shown to our table. Drinks were ordered. Staff were friendly and good humoured. The menu is not extensive but the food is delicious. All of us really enjoyed our meals and we felt comfortably full at the end of the evening. I would certainly recommend this restaurant and we will return either as a group or just the two of us."

"My partner and I, who are of African descent, visit London every year for vacation. Our friends recommended Gerrard's Corner in Chinatown for great crab meals, so we decided to try it out. We arrived at the restaurant around 6:30pm and, despite it being busy, we were seated promptly. However, things took a turn for the worse from there. The server who greeted us instructed us to order and pay for our meal upfront, which confused us as we were dining in, not ordering takeout. Despite our confusion, we went along with it and ordered our meal, which amounted to £124. We noticed that other diners were not treated the same way, as they were welcomed, seated, and paid at the end like normal. This discrepancy left us feeling uncomfortable and disappointed. We barely ate anything and only stayed to observe the restaurant's operations. This experience was truly disappointing and left a bad taste in our mouths."

"I ordered a chicken burger, and when it arrived, I was disappointed to find only a tiny dollop of sauce inside and wilted lettuce, as if it had been under a heat lamp for too long. One of our burgers contained a hair, prompting the guest to stop eating immediately. We flagged down our waitress, who was genuinely apologetic and said she would inform her manager. A few minutes later, the manager came over but told us she couldn’t do anything since the burger was mostly eaten. How could we identify a hair without taking a few bites? We insisted on speaking with the manager, and the waitress volunteered to take one of our guests to her. Eventually, the manager arrived, inspected the plate, and bombarded us with questions like “Where is the hair?” and “How long was it?” She then took the plate to the kitchen for better light. About 5 to 10 minutes later, a man in a white shirt approached us—likely a manager or security guard. He also asked questions but soon became rude and dismissive when we tried to explain. He insisted that everyone in the kitchen had short hair and wore hats and hairnets. Throughout this ordeal, we remained polite, responding to their inquiries honestly. After some back-and-forth, where they suggested we might be faking the incident, we pointed out that a camera near our table could provide evidence of the incident. He walked away without any further communication and did not return. The way this situation was handled was completely unacceptable and soured what was meant to be a special birthday meal, for which we traveled over an hour. After finishing our meal, another waiter approached us and simply asked “Amount?” which caught us off guard, as we hadn’t even received a bill yet. Following the hair incident, we noticed security peering around the corner, making us feel as though we were under suspicion. On a positive note, our waitress was lovely and very apologetic about the whole situation, consistently checking to ensure we had what we needed throughout the evening. However, for a £500 bill, I expected significantly better service."

"Very traditional upmarket Chinese Restaurant. Spaciously laid out, great staff, very good food. A bit pricey but certainly in the you get what you pay for category. Good selection of standard dishes plus a few more less common ones. A couple of set menus which work out cheaper. Good wine list. Will visit again Does takeaway food as well"
