"For the price you pay, this place is extremely noisy. It was difficult to have a conversation since the tables are packed too closely together. When I'm spending so much on a meal, I expect a better atmosphere. The service was lacking as well; the staff appeared either overwhelmed or indifferent. I had to actually call the gentleman back just to order my sides after he walked away immediately following my main order. On a positive note, the quality of the food was good, so hats off to the chef!"

"This is lovely place with lovely people but it lacks something. There are lots of little things that if they were put right would make it a great place. The food was lovely but expensive. We had the tasting menu which was well cooked. It had a good balance of textures but the portions were small even for a tasting menu. We ate early evening alone in the restaurant and we felt rushed in order that they could close. The breakfasts were excellent except that one morning we were served toast with mould running through it and sautéed potatoes were little bigger than a grain of rice. On the plus side the coffee was consistently good. Housekeeping wise there needs to be lot more attention to detail. Our luxury room was not. It was a badly fitted small room with large furniture so we kept bumping into the corner of the hardwood frame on the bed. The bathroom also had a grubby round the edges appearance. Screws were missing out of things here and there and the window frames needed a good wash. It seems that this restaurant with rooms is aiming at a high end market. With better management and attention to detail they should get there. An on-going regime of cleaning and maintenance together with more staff will undoubtedly help."

"Took my friend there for a birthday treat. Man in reception wasn’t very friendly. Looked like he didn’t want to be there. Told to take a seat in the reception area and brought us drinks menu. We ordered two teas. They came to our little table in the reception area with no teaspoons or sugar just a little pot of milk. We were then brought the main menu which we didn’t want as we wanted the afternoon tea menu. He brought this and we said we wanted the afternoon tea. He then told us we had to book that in advance! I wasn’t given the option to book any meal online. We de died to just order scones. They were brought to the table in reception so we asked if we could sit in the main restaurant area which they said we could. We had to bring our pot of tea and cups etc through to the restaurant. There were only three other people in there the whole time we were there. The food was ok. Scones very small for the price. It was cold, no music and lacked atmosphere. The staff weren’t over friendly and we couldn’t wait to leave. Won’t bother returning which is a shame as the setting is very nice."

"I love seafood, and love watching foodie channels and programmes. For so long now, we've wanted to eat at a place that blew our minds. Howth is great but I have never had the pleasure of a seafood platter like at Matts. We ate it as mains for 2 and it could have been enjoyed by 4 but don't you da4e make it smaller Matt. Just out of this world. I'm not lying when I say I woke up the next day and it was the first thing I thought of, haha its that good. We are booking again."

"Words fail me.Not in a bad way. This restaurant, food and level of service from Nikki and a lovely French girl surpassed any expectations We had booked a table for lunch including my friend who has a birthday next week. We were welcomed with complimentary glasses of Kir Royale .The staff members were very attentive without being obtrusive .The restaurant itself is simple but very inviting. The food was delicious.I had ordered a starter and my friends ordered two main courses all arrived together as requested. After I ordered a dessert and my friend who has the birthday was presented with a piece of cake complete with birthday candle. My other friend was also given a dessert so she would not feel left out. When the bill arrived the cake and extra dessert were complimentary too.I am married to a chef and I felt this whole dining experience from beginning to end was just fabulous.Everything exceeded my expectations as a customer.Def recommend eating here on my next visit to Edinburgh .Well Done !"

"We had lunch at Wanderlust because it was close to where we were and we had seen that it had four stars on HappyCow, but we were disapponted and should have read the more recent reviews first. There is not a large choice of vegan food anymore and all of the vegan lunch dishes are based on mock chicken, so we had the vegan breakfast for lunch (we don‘t enjoy mock chicken). This would have been ok because a traditional Scottish breakfast can be very filling, however, the food was mediocre or even worse. It arrived after a few minutes and was clearly just warmed up. It all lacked taste and seasoning and we did not finish our meals although we still felt hungry. My husband had the lemonade which was ok. I had the peach iced tea which had almost no flavour and tasted like infused water. Moreover, the staff were not that welcoming. This place looks so cute from the outside but with so many restaurants to choose from in Edinburgh, we would not go here again. Visited in October 2023 Updated from previous review on 2023 10 19"

"I typically avoid restaurants that are labeled as gastro, preferring pubs to be more traditional and restaurants to be separate entities. However, The Mark Cross Inn has merged the two, functioning more as a restaurant these days. Despite my initial reservations, I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty food and enjoyable dining experience I had with a group of 8. The service was friendly, the atmosphere was family-friendly and relaxed. Some of the dishes were served in a quirky manner, such as chips in small frying baskets, which I found charming but others in my party found unnecessary. Main dishes ranged from £10-£20, with options like steak burgers and battered cod being more budget-friendly. Overall, I had a lovely meal and would recommend The Mark Cross Inn for a casual lunch or family meal."

"That is not one of the best places, that IS THE BEST place where you can dine in in Edinburgh! You should definitely try the Scallops and shrimp appetisers, for the red meat lovers just go for the Lamb and for the light meat lovers: don’t even wonder SALMON!!! Moreover, I have never tried better olives in my life!!! Staff is super friendly and helpful, you will definitely feel like you have been taken care of and not only, you will walk out happier from there. The cosy interior and the vibe of the city will make you feel like you are on the streets of Paris! Just amazing atmosphere, I loved the table in the corner by the window! Amazing place for dates, very romantic! I highly recommend!!!"

"although the restaurant was not overcrowded, eating was delivered in the wrong order, our cots come at the same time as our main courses. the main course was very poor cod with Thai curry was cold and tasteless (an achievement to make a curry so bland! I ordered as a page, described as 'old grains', which turned out to be quinoa, why not say so on the menu? again it was cold and tasteless. the restaurant confirms itself as open to 10 o'clock, but until 9.15 the staff began to turn the air conditioning so that it was so cold we had to wake up our hunting, even if we had not finished our meal, turn off the lights and begin to clean adjacent tables and clean the floor of the kitchen area we sat near. overall the attitude was involuntary, and eating (compared to what I bought in the deli in the past was very bad. I wouldn't eat there again or recommend to others to do this."

"Not for Sunday roast, my beef was swimming in gravy which instantly puts me off and the vegetables were totally disappointing cauliflower cheese which had something on top of it which tasted weird, cabbage and boiled carrots. What happened to lovely, tasty roasted carrots and parsnips with a roast?"

"The food was good as expected. Service and atmosphere disastrous. The young people who serve here are grumpy and make the customer feel unwelcome . One nearly feels you have to apologize for being here. Glasses of vine were not filled to usual standard . They refilled them when we asked , but no apologies were given. Quite shocking that a brand like Ottolenghi should deliver so badly with their staff , seemingly untrained and perhaps underpaid. Will not come back . The atmosphere in that restaurant is too stressed and unpleasant."

"Our experience at the restaurant was disappointing. The food was overcooked and it took twenty five minutes to bring a bottle of wine, with two people having to crawl into a cupboard to find it. The wine arrived after we had finished our starters. Using the toilet was a very unpleasant experience, as it was in a disgusting condition and unflushed. After quietly pointing this out to one of the chefs, they apologized and cleaned it. The waitress then informed us that it had been cleaned. We were taking my son, who is at university in Leeds, out for dinner as he loves French food. Despite the nice staff, it was a horrible evening and we would not return to this restaurant."

"This restaurant is perfect for a lunch with friends after exploring the Tower of London. There were 8 of us and I had made a reservation beforehand. The service was top-notch, our food arrived promptly and we all enjoyed our meals. The beetroot burger was particularly popular among our group. We had a fantastic view of Tower Bridge from our table. Overall, it's a wonderful spot to grab a coffee, snack, or meal near the Tower of London."

"Perplexed by the reviews and how busy this place is given how poor the food quality was. I wouldn’t say the prices were outrageous, but I would absolutely expect a higher standard for what we paid. Salad was clearly out of a bag and way past it’s best; leaves were stale/brown on the ends. The burger was dry and unseasoned, the bun was awful it did not present well at all. Potato salad dry. Overpriced baked potato was totally crucified, blackened to a crisp. Gross! The soup of the day looked ok. Toilet had the remnants of hand soap that was watered down to extend its life. Shame as it looks a nice place from the outside. Might be ok for coffee and cake but I wouldn’t risk it as lunch was so terrible. I would have complained had my elderly parents not been there simply didn’t want to create a scene on our family day out."
