"Terrible experience at L’Orangerie. My friend and I had arrived in Sorrento for the day ready to find a nice place to have a drink and some food, considering it was 33 degrees we thought why not try find a nice pool to swim in as well. We walked past L’Orangerie poolside bar and restaurant and thought that sounded like the perfect place to spend our afternoon. After looking online to see if we needed to book, and seeing many openings for the afternoon we thought we would just walk in and ask as there were many free reservations. Upon arrival a staff member greeted us and we said we would like to have a few drinks by the pool, she said of course do you have a booking, or we said no (as after looking at the website it did not appear necessary, as well as looking around there were many free sun beds available) she said no worries I will check with my colleague. She turned her head for one second before then saying I am sorry we are so busy today. We were carrying backpacks as we had packed and brought a spare change of clothes as we expected to go to the beach, but upon arrival decided if we could find a pool that would be a better option. Dressed neatly in a linen skirt and singlet, whilst admittedly a little bit sweaty and flustered from the extremely hot weather I found the service extremely rude and conceited as they clearly had decided we were not good enough to be let in. My friend and I would have enjoyed more than a few drinks as we planned to stay in sorrento until a cooking class we had booked later that night. Would not return."

"A group of 7 of us went to The royal oak for a roast last sunday it was also my wife 's birthday .Living in chichester we have all been to the pub several times over the years but after our meal today we all agreed we would come back .When i rang up to book it i explained it was for my wife 's birthday and could we have a cake or something at the end to surprise her with i said i was happy to pay which the lady who took my booking said sure we will do something at the end for her no problem . The staff were nice enough but really not attentive and most were very lacklustre ,we ordered our food and there was quite a wait around 45 mins even though the pub was not that busy when we attended . So the food arrived and the lady got our condiments and then left , no one came back to check if we were happy with our food .Which to be honest we weren 't very happy at all as our roast potatoes were rock hard and tasted stale like they were a day old , also my sons fish was very overcooked and the batter was hard and my daughters roast chicken was missing the bread sauce .If someone had come back to check on us while we were eating we could have communicated our disappointment .So we all just carried on eating a very below average meal .Then at the end i had to go inside to ask for the bill and saw there was a 10 service charge on top which to be honest we received very little service so this seemed excessive and the price with the service charge equated to over £20 per roast .Which is one of the most expensive roast dinners in the local area and considering we all had rock hard stale potatoes again this price seemed very excessive . We did voice our disappointment with the lady that came to take our money which she was very apologetic and said there have been a lot of complaints about the potatoes i don 't know what has happened or gone wrong .But no offer of reducing our bill or taking off the service charge so we paid in full , £170 for a one course meal plus we brought a round of drinks over the bar when we first arrived so in total around £200 and to top it all off we never received anything for my wife 's birthday . Having left and got home and thought about the whole experience it was one of the worst meals we have had out in a long time and we do eat out regularly and in turn this did dampen the whole mood of our group and none of our group would return or recommend The royal oak far from it we would encourage people to eat somewhere else as this was a very overpriced sub standard meal . I did email the pub to explain our experience and how we were all feeling but they completely ignored me which again speaks volumes ."

"Bang average overpriced food unfortunately. Nice location and very clean with good atmosphere I was looking forward to bringing one of my best clients here for lunch. We ordered two glasses of Albariño with our dinner. Waitress came back to say they had run out so we ordered her recommendation instead. She re appeared with a magnum sized bottle and poured my clients glass first then started my glass only for it to run out after a few short dribbles……she apologised and then came back with another Magnum sized bottle only for it to run out AGAIN before my glass has reached the right level. Watched her serve other people before finally returning to complete my glass I asked if she could also top up my guests glass as she had taken a few sips whilst we waiting ages for my glass she refused saying she will have to charge extra!! So this set the tone for our meal embarrassing stuff. Then the waitress took our napkins away before the food came I only realised this half way through when I wanted to dab my mouth. The food was nice enough but maybe the above soured the taste my client did remark the food can remarkably quick for a restaurant it is like to have been ready in a selection on the pass which is maybe understandable but with fish it’s not good enough. We will not be back and I still owe my client a decent lunch there are countless in the area but I wanted to try somewhere I had not been my mistake."

"My friends and I had probably the worst “hospitality” experience due to the manager of this restaurant. First, the restaurant run out of water. Secondly, we have been asked to move table after 20min seating) since the manager had double booked our seats. We kindly accepted to move and they mentioned “the drinks will be on the house”. During the diner, we heard clients complaining about a similar double booking of table and the staff were trying to move the clients to different locations. The peak of this extremely poor experience was when receiving the bill. The drinks were added so we kindly asked the manager to remove the bottle of wine £50) and keep their word. The manager, coming to our table half hangover) replied we should be happy to have a table on walking and mentioned “I cannot remove the bottle of wine but I will give you 1x sparkling water and 1x bottle of Coca-Cola for free”. We were shocked and told him to call the “proper” responsible person of the restaurant assuming it couldn’t be him managing this place of high-end reputation. Unfortunately, he arrogantly said I’m the manager of this restaurant. This is all I can do for you today. Long story short, we were so angry with the manager behaviour that we said “fix the bill now or we will walkout without paying”, to which he reply “feel free to get out” and literally left the restaurant without telling anything to his staff. We had to wait 10min to understand he actually left the restaurant and left his team to deal with the situation without any feedback whatsoever. Thankfully the team sort it out instead, they were wonderful and apologies on behalf of the manager who apparently gets lot of amazing reviews reading the previous comments. Great food, beautiful decoration and a manager to take care off immediately!"

"Oh, what a delightful evening of fine dining and impeccable service! We were aware of the 2-hour table turnaround, a rule as sacred as ancient rituals but, alas, not consistently followed by mere mortals, I mean, restaurants. The food, an ephemeral delight that momentarily distracted us from impending eviction, particularly the oysters, which deserve an encore. After our grand feast, a proclamation was made in the most gracious manner: Out you go! No alternative seating offered, not even a spot at the bar to revel in our impending exile. It was a friend 's birthday, and what better way to celebrate than being unceremoniously kicked out before the dessert and the joyous serenade of Happy Birthday ? Seeking solace, I summoned the manager, who, in an act of managerial prowess, dispatched minions to chant the sacred mantra of the 2-hour table rule. In my quest for compensation, I was met with robotic responses and a generous offer to waive the discretionary service charge – a gesture as heartfelt as a rock. Not once were we graced with a reminder of the sacred 2-hour rule, nor did the waitstaff perform with the urgency befitting a Michelin-starred sprinter. The pièce de résistance? The epic saga to settle the bill, a riveting 25-minute ordeal where we could 've devoured a dessert, sang the birthday anthem, and maybe even choreograph a dance routine. Shocking service indeed, a performance deserving of a standing ovation – or maybe just a swift exit and a vow to never return."

"Strange place. Booked because it is like a nice place to go for a meal. Always a good sign when a restaurant has a bouncer at the door where you invite! Once we have gone into you, you will not get the mood of an upscale restaurant (which you will remember about the price of food, but rather like a nightclub. We went early and the place was pretty dead, not unexpected at 6:30 a week. The restaurant was extremely dark, so people use their phone burners to read the menu. The employees were smart and polite, but the mood was as if someone had placed some tables in the middle of a nightclub, not helped by bass heavy music that was too loud for this time of the evening. The food was good, not excellent. I asked about my lamb medium rarely and it came closer to well made, but then it was so dark I could not make sure enough of the color complain. Desserts were a mixed bag. Beautiful Tiramisu but the Pavalova was so hard that you could probably not eat it with the frozen stuff. The highlight was halfway through Dessert's music rose to ear piercing levels when a random fire performer appeared and started to go the restaurant, I'm sure she was very talented but seriously, Wwf? She made about 5 minutes to 7 people, the whole thing was unpleasant. At this point we couldn't wait to get out. I admit free, I am probably not the destination clients of the restaurant (I have some research and thought I should probably break the table with a look at some of the photos, but they charge £60 with less than 24 hours termination! Overall, this place is probably great for a night with drinks and dance and photos for IG, but for a nice, pleasant meal from all over the other place. A very muddy place."

"Tasty Pre Theatre Deal. Another rainy Friday night in London found me hooking up with my old pal Bernard at the Two Chairmen in Westminster for a couple of pints of the excellent Deuchars while we waited for B and the lovely Mrs Mitton to join us. As ever the pub was filled with a motley crew of 'suits ', in fine Friday night form, from the various government offices in the neighbourhood and by the time we left at around 6pm the pub was heaving.<br/ <br/ The venue for dinner had been the subject of much email traffic during the week and the suggestions had ranged far and wide both in terms of location and cuisine. As we only too rarely have the chance to get together we were after something a bit sophisticated but still conducive to a good natter and at a reasonable price. So it was that we alighted on the Soho branch of the Hix empire.<br/ <br/ Situated behind a heavy wooden door on a busy Brewer Street you have the choice of making your way downstairs to the basement bar or entering the light and airy restaurant on your left. The bar was buzzing and packed to the rafters so, as we had just made it in time to catch the end of the pre-theatre deal, three courses for £19.50, we quickly settled ourselves down at our nicely presented and reasonably spacious round table.<br/ <br/ It 's a well laid out, stylish room with plenty of space between you and your fellow diners. A long bar runs almost the length of one side of the room with some striking artistic installations hanging from the ceiling above which all add to a rather restrained but appealing sense of theatre. I particularly liked the stuffed seagull suspended within neon circles and the mobile made up of a variety of fish set within glass bricks.<br/ <br/ It 's a popular place, I would definitely recommend booking well in advance, and by 7.30pm the room had reached full capacity. However, unlike many other dining rooms I have experienced recently, I was struck by the excellent acoustics and how easy it was to carry on a conversation despite a very cheerful and chatty crowd.<br/ <br/ We kicked off with a fine bottle of Bellarosa Prosecco, and some tap water, while we had a quick glance at the menu. The pre-theatre selection is not going to detain you long as it 's a choice from two for each course but in a way that 's no bad thing.<br/ <br/ The boys had the lamb 's kidneys served on a bed on bramley apple purée. Cooked rare these little beauties were soft to the touch and had a distinct but subtle flavour which was well complemented by the slightly sharp fruit. The ladies had the selection of beets with goats curd and walnuts which got murmurings of approval and seemed to go down very well.<br/ <br/ We moved on to a reasonably priced bottle of Bodegas Airen which was an ideal companion to the smoked haddock which sat on a bed of buttery colcannon surrounded by a sea of creamy sauce, and topped with a perfectly poached egg. Beautifully cooked and full of flavour this was a tasty piece of fish and was presented simply but effectively. Bernard had the rib eye steak which he proclaimed to be cooked 'just right ' and suitably beefy. I liked the nice touch of serving it with an accompaniment of three tiny selections of mustard on a small tray. A man who likes his frites Bernard had ordered some chips in addition to his crispy potato 'strings ' which were gratefully shared amongst the table and again hit the spot.<br/ <br/ The dark chocolate mousse for dessert was a very decent size portion and was particularly toothsome without falling into the typical mousse trap of being too sweet or rich. Mrs Mitton 's 'pixie ' apple pie was anything but small and was declared to be a proper job and full of fruit, gaining the accolade of 'best shortcrust pastry I 've ever tasted '.<br/ <br/ As ever it was the digestifs that began to bump up the bill despite our restraint in sticking to the pre- theatre menu. However, it 's the little details that count and I thoroughly enjoyed my glass of Poire Williams and Bernard declared himself well satisfied with his Martel.<br/ <br/ All things considered we thought this was a very good dining experience, in lovely surroundings, with great company and at a reasonable price. However, looking at the standard menu I 'm not so sure I would have felt the same if I had gone 'off piste ' as the prices did seem a little steep for what was on offer (the fish fingers, chips and mushy peas will set you back £16 and that 's the cheapest offering).<br/ <br/ We had another quick look at the quirky, clubby bar, which had thinned out considerably by 9pm. With its bar billiard table and tasty selection of bar snacks it looked very appealing and we decided to add it to our 'must try out ' list. It was then time to head back into the Soho night and send the Mittons on their merry way back to Cambridge.<br/ <br/ Job well done Mr Hix!!"
