"OK, so the place isn 't fine dining, it 's not somewhere to linger all night, it 's a bit scruffy and the staff have seen it all, so if you 're a bit precious, or you 're trying to impress somebody, don 't go there. But if you want really good, tasty Chinese hotpot, then do go. We 've walked by the place a dozen times over the years and thought 'nah ', but this time we saw people eating hotpot and thought 'why not ', and we are glad we did. There 's loads of other stuff on the menu, but we opted for hotpot. Now there are several options, but we went for a slightly Thai influenced one with beef, with side orders of pak choi and mooli to cook in it (from a long list of options seafood, meat veg). We 're not big eaters so ordered a single serving size (rather than the per person one), and didn 't have any rice or noodles, which people with bigger appetites might want. They fired up the burner on the table and the pot arrived a thickish broth with loads of big chunks of beef, along with loads of tofu and big fresh chillis. We popped the veg in and started hot potting (if that 's a word). The broth was full of flavour spicy but not dangerously so and the slow cooked beef was beautifully tender. The bill, with service and one glass of half decent merlot for Mrs Ex Punk, as I was driving, was £36. You can 't knock it at that price. So, it 's likely to be our go to place in Chinatown."

"I 've had a brilliant experience at T and Cake before. I can 't eat gluten and as a result was delighted that I could get a really good toasted sandwich made with gluten free bread there in September. Visited with friends today and ordered the same thing as we did last time (which is not marked as a non gluten free option on the menu) was told that the chef was not happy to make it because it wouldn 't be as good as the normal one . Still asked for it and said I would be happy however it arrived, as I had enjoyed it so much (spoiler alert here this had hands down been the best gluten free thing I have eaten all year). Front of House came back again a few minutes later to say the chef was unhappy to make it, and offering me a mushroom benedict which I can 't eat because of the sauce. I went down to ask the chef what he could make me, to be shouted at and told I am too busy to deal with this and was handed over to a member of front of staff. Ended up with a bacon sandwich which I could have made myself and probably better. Sadly had literally said five minutes before this experience that I was going to ask about booking the upstairs for a group booking/party if possible, so they have lost business there. I gather that the standard of Connor 's food is much more important than polite or helpful customer service. An easy fix might be take items off the menu if you are unhappy with making them gluten free so the quality so this doesn 't happen again. Either way, we won 't be going back, so plenty of space freed up for customers who can eat gluten or perhaps one less customer so he will be a little bit less busy and a little bit less stressed."

"Decided on drive and dinner with my elderly Mother and opted for Helensburgh and The Ruby having been there in the past (last time about 2 years ago certainly) and found it to be excellent then. Not the case this time. Arrived just before opening and stood with a little family of 3 waiting to get in. Door opened at 5pm and we were, at that point, the only 2 occupied tables in the restaurant. We were told the window seat we took would need to be back for 7pm as it was reserved, not a problem. Orders taken just after 5pm for 1 starter, 2 mains with rice, drinks of 1 latte and 1 soda water with blackcurrant. The drinks came within minutes as did the prawn cocktail starter. Prawn cocktail was generous portion but had no flavour whole thing was watery. This was cleared from table about 5.15. Sitting at a table with no food about 5.30 a waitress asked us would we like to order anything else? Reply being we’d just like our mains please. By 5.45 still no food and other diners tucking into their main courses despite arriving after us. My Mum still hadn’t eaten a thing as she was ordering a main and planning a dessert . By 5.50 I decided to ask where food was and if it wasn’t ready we were paying for the drinks and one starter and leaving. I approached a waitress and was told the food “wouldn’t be long now” .. remember we’d to vacate table by 7pm. I honestly don’t think the order for our mains had been passed to kitchen until I asked. I returned to table and my Mum and me decided to pay for what we’d had and go so asked waitress for bill as we’d waited 55 minutes by then with no signs of the food. Before leaving I went to the bar area and asked to speak to the manager. Eventually the manager came over. I voiced my concerns about the time we’d waited and was met with complete disinterest and excuses.. “the restaurant is busy” (it was 50% full at this point) , if they struggle to cope at 50% I dread to think how they manage when it’s full. Then she said “the majority of people don’t complain” .. not really a great selling point is that ??? Apparently the lady was the owner and couldn’t have been less interested in the valid point I was making. We sat almost an hour with my mother having no food . Bad enough but the level of apathy and disinterest was surprising for what was once a gem of a restaurant (I believe it’s changed hands since my last visit) Certainly won’t be going back and I’d advise others to spend their time and money on a different restaurant in Helensburgh deserving of both of those and custom welcomed and appreciated"
