"As seems to be the case with a lot of Ask properties, the setting is a major selling point. Located in the heart of York and only a few minutes walk from the York Minster, this branch is no different in that respect. The building itself, once a Victorian meeting hall, is immense and takes your breath away. Lareg pillars and tall plants surround the walls, and you really do feel like you're in a special place. The food doesnt quite live up to that but then, it couldnt really. Thats not to say its bad food it isnt. Its basic pizza, pasta and salad dishes which are tasty but unremarkable. For a city centre restaurant its reasonably priced, with the exception of the desserts which are very expensive for what you get.If you can visit in the daytime, you'll get to appreciate your surroundings. Visit at a weekend evening, and chances are it'll be heaving. This doesnt take away from the experience, but it means your service will suffer accordingly. Its a dining experience unlike any other in the north of England and well worth a visit. Just dont expect earth shattering food."

Ordered the baked chocolate gnocci and there was green mold on the chocolate sauce.

Absolutely fantastic meal in beautiful surroundings. The service was incredible, all the waiting staff were so helpful and pleasant to chat with. Definitely go back in the future. Thank you

The restaurant has a large space with high ceilings, creating a noisy and echoey atmosphere. It lacks warmth and feels more like a cafeteria. The pasta was disappointing, with a thin tomato sauce and bland seafood. The staff were friendly but seemed overwhelmed with their workload.

A large group of us had an early dinner here recently, despite having it booked for weeks and sending them menu choices it was disorganised. Part of the group got seated the rest of us had to wait, we were on 2 long cramped tables with no room to move between. Food was ok but tables didn’t get cleared very quickly. We attended last year and it was much better. Won’t be visiting again. View menu

Went there with my family, there were six of us. The food was very average. My wife's pasta sauce had almost no meat in it, my daughter's meat balls were a bit dry and my side order of vegetables were dried out in places, cold and without their dressing. £4:25 for a piece of wilted brocoli, dried out green beans and a few frozen peas. No one wanted to complain as it was a family Christmas shopping trip. I've had worse but I wouldn't go there again.

We had a lovely experience here, the Assembly rooms are beautiful and is a building of significance (google if you dont know), the high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and huge marble pillars are stunning. The food and service were as expected of any Ask (with it being a chain), everything tasted good, everything arrived as and when it should, the service was pleasant, despite it being busy we were not rushed. It really is the aesthetic that gets this review the 5 star.

This restaurant is absolutely beautiful the building is stunning. I went there with a large group of friends, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food is good value for money, it was very filling and we all enjoyed what we ordered. My only issue really is that the menu is rather limited for vegetarians there are a couple of options, but they are rather uninspiring. The goats cheese and mushroom calzone is absolutely wonderful, but I end up having it every time I visit an ASK because the other options are so boring... The puddings help to make up for it though. I recently went to this restaurant with my grandchildren after attending a pantomime. Initially, they couldn't find our reservation but eventually seated us. It took them half an hour to take our order and then they said they found our booking. The food was delicious when it arrived. However, 45 minutes after we had finished our main course and after asking 5 times for the dessert menu, someone finally came to clear the table and take our dessert order. After waiting another 20 minutes, we decided to leave. The kids were disappointed about not getting dessert, but we didn't want to wait any longer. Overall, it was a disappointing experience and we will not be coming back.

The restaurant is very impressive on arrival in a beautiful building. It was extremely busy as expected for the time of year. Waiting staff were lovely and very attentive. Good choice on the menu 6 ladies for lunch ,they missed one of the starters off but did take it off the bill without us asking. My meal was lovely and we all enjoyed it but felt it was a bit overpriced. The ladies toliets were a disgrace, one loo wouldn't flush, one door had no lock and they were filthy, the dust on the pipes etc was an inch thick and clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Cobwebs everywhere. We enjoyed our meal but I wouldn't rush back, some improvements especially in the loos are desperately needed.
