"We went there by chance needing a quick lunch and thought it was fabulous . They are highly efficient and welcomed us warmly. The restaurant is not huge and we were glad to have got there at about 12 noon. I had the dish of 5 different types of smoked fish on the 3 course menu served with an excellent sauce, a local delicacy and delicious, followed by a small steak served with small roast potatoes and a small salad. The meat was perfect, far better than is normal for a modest menu price and the dish as a whole was excellent. The dessert was apricot tart and very good. The overall price with 2 coffees was 33 euro for 2 peopleThe staff are very friendly , with amusing quotations in the toilet and elsewhere, and we felt very much at home. It is relaxed, packed with locals and no signs of tourists, rapid service of excellent food, and plenty of jokes with the staffFaultless. Can't wait to get back. A new discovery but amongst the best we have discovered."

Typical French bar serving quality lunch at exceptional value. Welcoming, fun, local owners. Near the market and a great place to while away the day with good wine and friendly locals.

We were in Challans for the market and were near this brasserie for lunch. It was the most authentic French of our holiday so far. It is busy as lunch arrives so early to make sure you get a table. The menu du...jour is a good choice. We had big chicken after smoked fish starter. The children's menu is also great. Friendly staff. We were very happy to find this place.

My wife and I visited with 2 friends for lunch in July 2013. Useful location 3 minutes walk from the bustling market. 3 excellent courses including a large buffet to start with, drinks and coffee came to about 60 euros between us. Excellent service, comfortable friendly ambience, well prepared dishes. The restaurant was full but the bonus and recommendation was that all the other guests were French. View menu

Good value for money. The café doesnt seat many, and it does get filled up with locals, but the staff are friendly and the food is good, and filling. Buffet starters, then freshly cooked main dish of the day, which changes each day (cassoulet, veal casserole...), but there is a choice if that doesnt appeal, and then simple pudding - chocolate mousse, fromage blanc ....We took a 2 year old, and his lunch turned up within 5 minutes of us ordering, and his pudding was served when he had had enough of the main meal. The staff then started playing with him.I would definitely recommend, well worth the effort of getting a table.

This small, seemingly family-run bar/resto is an ideal place for a good, quick lunch. The set menu at 12.50 euros could not be more reasonable and the food was well-prepared and fresh. An ample cold buffet serves as a starter. I had a very delicious cassoulet (too much) and my husband had the special, a grilled l'onglet (flank steak) with shallots and fresh homemade fried potatoes and salad. He finished happily with Ile Flottant (I cannot promise the creme anglais was house-made but it was fine). Service was efficient and rapid, if impersonal, but we understood as there were several groups waiting for seats. We weren't looking for gourmet dining, just a good simple meal and that is what we g...

The restaurant now opens early Friday evenings in addition to lunch time. My wife and I have now been twice, the second time influenced by the very friendly owner who does front of house. For starters I had the selection of smoked fish served with leaves and beetroot my wife had the terrine accompanied respectively by a glass of Quincy and Cheverny. The starters were both tasty and well presented, not huge portions but absolutely fine for us.We both had magret de canard (from different menus) both with small roast potatoes mine with a vegetables with figs my wife had hers with an orange sauce. We both had a glass of Madiran, better than I few I've tasted in the past. I finished my meal with a...

"We were travelling through the Vendée region after purchasing seafood for the festivities. We then were looking for a decent restaurant to have lunch when we came across The Louis XIII in Shallans. Our first impression was an extremely warm welcoming as we were shown to our table. We all ordered the Earth and Sea salad , we were not disappointed and even pleasantly surprised. The salad was copious, delicious and even adventurous as a fig ice-cream was served with it which was the perfect compliment to the smoked fillet of beef, duck and king prawns butterflies. Around 12.50 for a main course. Very friendly, helpfull staff and owner making you feel instantly at home. We all loved it and will definitely return when we 're visiting the region for its seafood.
