"TA : Auberge de Rochefort 19470 Le Lonzac France tel: 05 55 9793 42 MERVEILLEUX! Le Lonzac is a tiny one- horse town situated in the middle of mid France. The villages surrounding it are filled with farmers and second home owners; the countryside is...green, gently undulating and the rich soil produces various food crops, fruit trees and, most importantly of all, Limousin cattle. These are large beasts, a beautiful rich brown all over and appear to produce good milk as well as high quality beef: they can be seen grazing in plentiful numbers on fields of lush green grass all over this area. Le Lonzac itself has clearly seen better days: a significant proportion of its shops are empty- but there is still a nice baker's , a small supermarket and Auberge de Rochefort. Our noses led us to open the door of the restaurant, as the smells wafting out served as a powerful communicator that good food was served here. This was further confirmed when we saw tables filled with farmers, still in their overalls, sitting at communal tables, eating lunch together. On questioning, we were told that only luncheon was served during the week, with dinner just available at weekends- which turned out to mean Saturday only. We therefore booked for the following Saturday- which turned out to be essential as all of the dozen or so tables were full that evening. The menu was short, usually a very good sign that everything is very fresh, with 5 or 6 starters, main courses desserts. The fixed price menu was €22 and included 2/3 of the dishes on the menu. We were a table of 5 our first courses were variously: warm goat's cheese with salad pork noisettes with mustard grain. These were universally declared delicious as well as very nicely presented. Next, and this was the moment I had been waiting for, three of us were served Limousin beef; the other two having chosen chicken. It was well worth the wait. The beef, which was in one juicy piece, rather than slices, was absolutely siblime and beautifully presented with fresh local vegetables. In fact both the people who had ordered chicken, immediately regretted their choice once they had seen our meals arrive at the table. My fellow beef eaters both said that it was the best beef they had ever tasted: as for me, the only other beef that tasted this good was eaten in Buenos Aires, which is a lot further to travel for a decent dinner. The portions were so large, though I tried really hard, I was unable to finish mine, but a male companion was more than happy to help me out! I was completely unable to face the idea of dessert, but the rest of the group were made of sterner stuff and therefore ordered variously chocolate fudge cake (served with cream and ice cream) and a strawberry sundae, both of which caused more moans of delight when consumed. What more can I say? The decor and ambience are that of a fairly typical french provincial restaurant, complete with a small white dog who wanders round and lies by tables as he sees fit. Service was both friendly and efficient; each course arrived without too long a wait and the place was immaculate. The lady proprietor was welcoming, if a little formal; her assistant spoke good english and was very enthusiastic: they made a very good team. Truly this was French regional cooking at its best: if I were a farmer, I would be beating a path here for my lunch too!"

Although this restaurant goes not do 'menu ouvriers ' (workers lunches) their 15 Euro menu du jour is a very good budget four course meal with red wine included. The welcome was muted but the service was obliging and efficient almost fast for this part...of rural France, probably due to the fact that there was only a set meal. The room was clean and well maintained and well frequented by people who had obviously come to enjoy good country cooking. It is always a bonus when the chef bakes his own bread for the guests. It was also nice to have fresh cutlery with every course. It is just a pity that the chef did not appear in person to ask if everything was OK. Forecourt parking is limited but...

We spent a very pleasant evening in this resto whilst having a birthday break camping in nearby Treignac. The restaurant is not too large, perhaps catering for about 50, so it could become busy, but on the night we visited there were three couples and a party of four, all ably served from the hostess alone. The food on offer was locally sourced and cooked with both care and panache and served with accompaniments that were decorative and both tasty and fulfilling. The wine list was not large but did cover for anything that was offered on the menu's or carte and at very reasonable prices. One good offer was made to us, as one was driving the wine was re-corked without question to be finished in...

the restaurant was quite busy but this didn't have any impact on the dinners, I wasn't 100% on what I had ordered as my French isn't brilliant and the young waiter was also trying his best - I feel I or should say we did really good as the food was out of the world, every mouthful tasted superb and I just kept wanting more and didn't want my meal to end, the dish I am speaking about I later found out was pigs trotters and if I knew what I was ordering I wouldn't have ordered but please it was so good, my main course we again found out it was kidneys this was very rich and Moreish, the vegetables and potatoes again were cooked perfectly, a beautiful meal served in a warm busy attractive envir...

a wonderful Sunday dinner here was characterized by an imaginative menu, a flawless cooking, more attentive (but not via intrusive) service and a round friendly professionalism. I can't think of a single thing that was wrong with our meal or the ambiente surrounding his joy. the. excellent wine list was a crowning delight. during the week a 15 euro lunch menu is excellent for four courses. the previous negative comments here (of people who believe that British expectations are the norms all over the world) reflect my experience of this excellent auberge in a charming village that has been thrown away in the deep of correze is not reflected. a word for our friends from the English home counti...

That was the second time I had eaten here. for the first time we were three who were ignored for five minutes before we sit, although there were few diners and then we waited too long for menus, water., brot. the a la carte main was acceptable. second time, sixteen places reserved, wait a long time before we were invited to sit. for easy operation we went for the menu du jour, but there was a general reluctant for the nutritional requirements, even vegetarian. starter [chevre/miel with an salat leaf or two was ok. the main, stuffed vegetables, smells misleading tasty it was bland to say the least, and the supposedly meat stuff was not a threat to the local animal life. desserts were good. I...
