"We were looking for a place to eat in the Sternschanze area and everywhere appeared to be fit to burst. This was place was absolutely bursting at the seams but we were told we could be seated which was good of them I suppose. I have never seen so many tables squeezed into a small space. You felt like you were having an intimate meal with the others around you (about an inch of a gap between the tables) and the waiting staff could barely move. Maybe a bit too much of profiting over customer experience. There were only 2 members of staff working the whole restaurant which was totally absurd. I actually watched as he would help prepare food in the kitchen as well as try to deal with service. You felt guilty for taking up any of his time! We struggled with the menu a bit as it was all in German and we only have limited German but I suppose that is a fault with us. The staff had no time to translate anything. We took a punt on a sharing platter and a side of patatas bravas I was ready for a long wait but unbelievably the food was in front of us in under 5 minutes even though the restaurant was so busy. It can't be that fresh. The little meat and cheese bites on the platter were lovely as were the prawns. The patatas bravas were standard and if it wasn't for the complimentary bread it wouldn't have been anywhere near a full meal. (We did ask if it was enough for a meal and were told yes) Overall we didn't enjoy the experience in the cramped chaotic conditions - it may be better when slightly less busy but its clearly very popular with locals. The caipirinha's however are good value and very strong!"

A small but comfortable location with an Iberian touch. We eat a good quality and well cooked fish, accompanied by a refreshing sangria. The service was ok.

Had lunch here with a friend, cheap, okay food which wasn't very Portuguese, but good quality and quite filling. Great deal, nice food. Would definitely try again. Nice neighborhood for a lazy Sunday afternoon, too.

I had dinner in this place, but we only had different tapas and sangria. The tapas were all tasty, speciallly the grilled the Calamari. The service was kind of slow because it was very crouded, but the food its good.

Although the interior is a bit over the top the flair sends your mind and soul to a Portuguese harbour. The grilled food (meat and fish) is amazing (swims in oil and garlic). The old (very skilled waiter) has a family business wibe that is complemented by his younger crowd staff:-) View menu

This restaurant offers a wide selection of good Portugese food for an attractive price. The decoration is typically Portugese, the chairs and tables simple. Do not expect a lot of fuzz, they leave you in peace enjoying the food. The wine list is limited but nice, ideal when you want to jump in to have something different without being robbed.

We found this charming Portuguese restaurant whilst looking for somewhere to eat in the Sternschanze district. What a find! I had Cataplana, a Portuguese fish stew speciality and my other half had the swordfish (2 steaks!). There was lots of choice available on the menu. We took up the offer of a Caprainha cocktail to round off the meal which was very reasonably priced. Overall a brilliant little eating establishment in probably my favourite area for eating out on an evening in Hamburg.

I've been there three times and they never seem to fail. I always buy the tapas dishes, the food is very simple, they obviously let the quality of the ingredients speak for itself, no extra fancy stuff (that no-one really needs), just good food and friendly staff. And as an added bonus, the dishes are very inexpensive. If you go there then i recommend the grilled squid and the chorizo. As i said the servers are really friendly and if you are lucky they might just offer you Portuguese Brandy on the house as a desert. Both me and my wife had grilled fish, one kind each, and both fish very just about grilled to perfection. The little salat and the sangria we had where also good. But the potatoes, the spinache and the carrots served with the fish where just not ok. The potatoes where supposed to be salty potatoes, I had to put salt on them, the spinache was not prepared good enough, and the carrots where just plain boring.I think the restaurant has a lot of potential, but they do need to do better than they did when we where served.

......20 minutes I spent eating possibly the best paella I've had in a long time and I hadn't even made a dent in it. It had me beaten. We chose to eat here on spec after wandering past the place. We were early and thankfully so, as they were turning people away an hour later. Might I suggest you get here before 8pm. The place has a great atmosphere, lovely staff and is warm and comfortable. The tables are a little close together, but hey.We ordered the pork with clams and the paella for one. Both were fantastic. Ive always been able to put my food away but the portions were huge. Make sure you're hungry. The house wine was drinkable and pleasant, there is a great choice of beers and to cap a...

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
