"I see that a number of people have given this restaurant less than complimentary reviews and I have to disagree with them, vehemently. Consider how you approach Gavarnie before coming here as this will I'm sure impact upon your judgement too. This is a pretty...little village without doubt but is in the back of beyond. If you come here on a day trip from Lourdes in your air-conditioned coach or car, you are probably going to have unrealistic expectations of Claire Montagne. I though took a different approach, I had spent the previous night in the Refuge La Breche de Roland. This bijou mountain hut, sleeps in small rooms, has no hot water, shower facilities and only one inside WC. It is also several hours away from Gavarnie over some pretty tough terrain. Imagine therefore arriving at Claire Montagne, tired, a bit smelly, exhausted and hungry and be greeted with a big smile from an effusive proprietoress( We were offered the choice of sitting inside or outside on the terrace. As it was such a glorious day, we chose the latter and Madame then set about adjusting the awnings to suit our party's shade preferences! It really is a lovely spot, perfect to relax in and listen to the river passing by just below the restaurant. We ordered our food from our waitress whose English was significantly better than my French and was happy to chat and talk us through the menu. I went for the omelette as well as a coffee and given the previous day’s rudimentary approach to catering, had low expectations. It came very quickly and was so much more than I had anticipated. It was omelette, yes but there was delicious local cured ham there as well, together with potatoes and salad. The coffee was most enjoyable too. I could not have asked for more…but I did. I decided to round it off with a blueberry pancake. These too came very quickly and once more I eagerly cleared the plate and would gladly have had some more if time had permitted. This is of course not haute cuisine but that is not what I was looking for nor expected. This is good, well cooked and generous helpings of food and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who approaches it in the manner that I did. I would however not advocate jumping in the river afterwards as it is unimaginably cold!"

we had a nice walk in the park and then needed a snack. they were not yet open for lunch, but offered us a beautiful blue-beet and tee. really nice staff and a clean bath that was needed much after our walk.

we thought here was an salad for lunch before we went to the cirque. we ordered two different salads, which proved to be almost the same. there was almost no cheese in them, and very little dressing. really boring eating. View menu

We dined here and really enjoyed the local trout and its accompaniments, and for desert we had crepes with myrtilles, and myrtilles sorbet really delicious. The decor included lots of quirky Pyrenees themed items yet tasteful. I liked the marmotte lampshade so much that...I bought one!

We were there on a weekday in March which is not a very busy time. There were only about five choices for lunch and none of them appropriate for vegetarians. If you eat meat you will have an excellent lunch at a price you would...expect in Paris. But this was the only restaurant open and it seemed that the prices reflected the lack of competition. The hot and cold wine was delicious.

I... although this restaurant is the most authentic and best cooked in the village, but I just tried the restaurant in gavarnie. View menu

Two other adults, myself and three teenagers visiting from Lourdes wished to have coffee and refreshments in this establishment. An arrogant and pompous proprietor refused us entry and when asked by my colleague the reason, responded by slamming the door and walking away shouting. ...????clearly not interested...in contributing to the Gavarnie tourist business community...incredible bad behaviour by any standards.

We took a walk to the Cirque at Gavarnie as many do, and popped in here on spec. There is a terrace with a view along the valley and a relaxed atmosphere (possibly helped by the late summer sun and a glass of Jurancon). There...are local specialities including the local Pork (served medium! but absolutely wonderful try it and trout for my fish eating partner . Beware vegetarians there may be lardons in some of the potato dishes. Best crepe and honey my partner had ever had, and as many ways to eat Myrtilles (billberries) as required. As its a limited bistro menu it was fast and the staff were helpful and explained things in English when required. Great experience!
