"Stayed at Belton Woods for 5 nights for work. After dining in the hotel’s other restaurant the previous nights and had a great experience, but fancied a steak on my last night as a treat so went to the Claret Jug. Service was OK, a little slow to be served even though it was only me waiting. I would have accepted a friendly “wont be a moment” but not a word was said. The beer was served in a warm glass. Ordered a medium rare steak which arrived well done. Waited a few minutes for a service check which didn’t happen so I returned the meal to the bar counter. The replacement arrived which was still overdone (medium to well done this time), with the same chips and onion rings that had been redipped in the fryer and ruined before being left to go like warm and served with the same whole tomato and mushroom which were now both stone cold. Not having the time to wait and being hungry, I ate the meal but being charged £20.50 for a 6oz Rump Steak seemed expensive, but would be worthwhile if cooked and served properly. Don’t eat in the Claret Jug. Staff don’t appear to care front of house and kitchen seem incompetent and incapable. Bumped into a colleague in the hotel foyer who won’t eat in the Claret Jug during his stay."

Basic menu but not too bad although some items on the menu were a bit pricey. Evenso, it was served quickly and hot.

Main courses were fine but non alcoholic drink outrageously expensive. A half print of lemonade and lime cordial cost £5.30.

the service was slow and the quality of the ingredients was not very good, one night I had chips and they were just bits and scraps of potatoes

Waited far too long for our food… went up to the bar to query it and all staff were on their phones, clearing not caring one bit. Food was very average when it did arrive. Then the kids had another long wait for their desserts. Would not recommend at all!

I have stayed at this hotel many times years ago it was owned by de Ver and was excellent, since then after many buy outs the service is very slow with staff that seem to think you’re a nuisance and at times ignore you When the food eventually arrives it is generally of a good standard.

We're staying in the lodges and popped down to the hotel restaurant for lunch, it was closed and we were redirected to the sports bar. Despite the bar being relatively empty, service was remarkably slow and chaotic borderline incompetent. It took 40mins for a dry burger (devoid of any flavour) to be delivered to our table, the side salad was an absolute joke. We won't be returning! View menu

Arrived at hotel and went to bar to watch football and some pre dinner drinks. After buying drinks a sign was put up to say they were now closed. 6pm. We asked when they were closing the following evening and got told we don’t know the management decide on the day-it was 8pm yesterday, 6pm today and tomorrow is 5pm we think! At least prewarned we could go to a local bar which was open and a glass of wine cost less than £8.75.

Staying at the hotel, we met up with our friends at the Claret Jug, for lunch. They 'd just had a sandwich, which they said wasn 't good, ie the bread wasn 't fresh, and they 'd waited ages to be served. We opted for a toastie (2 cheese something or other). It was dreadful, with the underwhelming taste of fried bread. I ordered a lime soda, but was served lime and lemonade, which was flat. Too tired to complain, so left it. Weirdly, it tasted of Turkish Delight rose lemonade perhaps? Wouldn 't recommend it to anyone. Avoid avoid avoid. PS A single shot of lime added £1.50 to the already pricey 'soda/lemonade '.

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
