"Firstly let me say I have eaten at this pub/restaurant several times and never had a bad meal. Therefore it was an easy decision when thinking about where to go to celebrate Mothers Day. We could only get a table at 12 midday so were almost first customers to arrive. We had a disappointing welcome and basically stood at the bar being ignored by our female host for two or three minutes. When she did speak to us there was no hello, or welcome, but a curt ‘what name is the booking in’. Pity about this but it didn’t affect our enjoyment of the nicely cooked food. The pigeon breast starter with black pudding was delicious. My son had roast turkey, I had roast beef and my husband had the homemade pie. Each dish was very good, plenty of meat and the vegetables cooked perfectly. Only one of us had room for pudding and the cheesecake was fabulous. All in all a lovely mother’s Day lunch. The landlord is lovely very friendly and we will definitely be back."

Exceptional country pub. Friendly staff, excellent beer from the barrel. Good selection of both traditional and “fancy” food. Plus dog friendly. Can thoroughly recommend.

Good quality food in pleasant surroundings. A tasty spicy soup, croutons plus plenty of bread followed by steak and ale pie full of lean meat and plenty of gravy. This was my third visit, two very good, this one excellent

Lovely pub for eating and for good beer. Pub menu was good. This is an old building with different levels and areas with lots of tables and chairs. If I was in a wheelchair I might find it difficult. Also doors might be tricky too manoeuvre in and out.

Really enjoyed our first visit to Square and Compasses very busy with only a couple of tables available as had not booked basic main menu but excelent choice of specials pigeon breast and black pudding starter, followed by skate wing/veal burger all washed down with a pint of local bitter and a coke staff friendly and helpful good value at £52.00 for two courses. Well worth a visit and recommend booking.

This pub has everything we could ask for. You simply walk in, find a table, order your food from the menu board on the wall, grab a nice glass of wine, and enjoy without constant interruptions from waiters. The atmosphere is lovely, the food (especially the curry) is incredible, and the prices are very reasonable. We are willing to travel 30 minutes just to come to this pub because it is far superior to any options in our neighborhood.

Just enjoyed a lovely meal with 4 of us at the Square and Compass. We arrived a little early but no problem to the welcoming staff. The place itself is a picture of homeliness and the interior harks back to a time when country pubs really were different from each other. The majority of the menu begins with ‘homemade’ and our choices reflected same. Starters and mains were simply excellent; as good a Sunday lunch meal as we’ve had in a long time. In summary; excellent service delicious food in superb surroundings, fully recommended.

First visit to this lovely pub for dinner with my two adult children on a sunny Thursday evening. Located in a beautiful out of the way spot, with ample parking, the Square Compasses is delightful to look at inside and out, with much memorabilia on display. The menu is extensive and we each chose something different none of the dishes disappointed. All were beautifully presented and prepared really couldn't fault anything. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere just as you would hope from a country pub. We will be returning very soon and will have no hesitation in recommending to others.

"We came here on a last minute hunt to find a Sunday roast with family without much expectations. However when entering its a lovely set up and we were greeted by Lee and Alison who looked after us for the meal who just to begin were absolutely brilliant, they really care about the customers and make this place extra special. Now for the food you can get a 2 or 3 course meal so everybody made various selections but all had starters. Most went for the Aarancina which isn't your usual starter with a Sunday roast but for here it packs alot of flavour and is a great way to start the meal. They have a great selection of alcoholic beverages I went for a simple beer. For the main roasts we had a variety of meats I wanted the pork but sadly they had no crackling which was half the reason for ordering but if I am being honest after eating the meal it wasn't missed out the meat was tasty full of flavour but the sides were the key. The roast potatoes were of a top level usually when you eat out they are never as good as eating at home, the Yorkshire were huge and tasty, gravy brilliant with plenty to go around and lots of veg and cauliflower cheese on the side. Honestly this was excellent a really good roast probably the best I have ever ate in a resteraunt. Some of the others had the lamb shank which was huge and had great feedback but the beef was great and so was everything else. So yes check it out eat in and eat some great food in a nice setting with absolutely brilliant service you won't be disappointed."

"What can I say….We held our wedding dinner and impromptu party ! on the mezzanine floor and had the time of our lives with our nearest and dearest. It’s been a pretty special place for us as we dined at the House by Hilly Gant to check the area out before moving from London and so as we were having a small wedding of 22 people we felt this was the best place to have our wedding. Suzanne and the team could not have done anything more to make our afternoon and evening so perfect. The food was outstanding and our guests were very impressed Harry and his cocktail making skills are second to none. Huge shout out to all the kitchen staff who’s attention to detail and timings were spot on. Leading up to the day itself Suzanne took charge and offered her expert advice on how to dress the room and made so much effort with our requirements. 3 children and 1 baby as part of the guest list! . The beef in particular was spectacular and the chocolate fondant was sublime. We honestly didn’t want to leave. After dinner Suzanne was able to crank the music up and we had a little party ensuring all the guests downstairs were still well looked after our friends were actually dining downstairs and were able to join us towards the latter part of the evening! From the bottom of our hearts thank you so much to everyone for making it so special for us. I’m not surprised that you were recently awarded your second rosette, totally deserved. For anyone looking for quality food, locally sourced, and beautifully executed this is the place to come. SEE YOU SOON and thank you again x"
