"We came here due to the great recommendations we have had. However it wasn 't the best experience. The place is somewhat dated, but pleasant enough. Starters were soup, and cheese and chutney, both quite nice. The mains were chicken, and beef in red wine. However the potatoes with the beef were undercooked easily noticed when the fork doesn 't even go half way in. The carrots to were undercooked not even al dente. My wife had a load of chips so we weren 't stuck for veg, but surprisingly the waitress never at any point asked how it was, until she came to take the plates away. We pointed out that we had had ample veg, but did expect something more of an apology than just 'Oh sorry '. A gesture like a free coffee or a small deduction would have been a positive get out for the restaurant instead of be leaving with a negative vibe. The pudding which we shared was quite nice. The total cost £51 would have been a very fair price had the vegetables been cooked properly. With so many good eateries around, i am not sure if we would return."

The food was amazing, the staff were friendly. I made a reservation without knowing what to expect, but had a wonderful evening with wonderful people in a fantastic location.

Great meal last Friday. Menu has plenty of varied choices and when the plates arrived the food was excellently presented. Really nice and friendly staff made it a lovely evening.

We went to this restaurant for dinner twice during the week, and both times the staff were very friendly. There was a good selection of food, and everything we tried tasted great. Definitely worth checking out. View menu

Great welcome and good choice of Scottish food. We had crab chowder, slow cooked beef, crab cocktail and salmon. All good and generous portions of fresh vegetables and salad. Staff were attentive and friendly good service on a very busy night. Thank you

Rather dated feel to the hotel but food good soup followed by scallops after a rather cold, damp day. Some staff clearly pretty inexperienced but very pleasant and one shouldn't complain. Pity about the sliced bread with the soup, a roll or some decent bread would have been good.

Met for a girls catch up evening. Food was excellent, staff very friendly and price very reasonable. I am generally a meat eater, but went for the veg option….carrot and walnut fritters with parsnip sauce, absolutely delicious. Everyone enjoyed their deserts, lovely sticky toffee pudding. Three of us stayed at this restaurant for 3 nights after staying at the Stromness, which was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. The Smithfield, on the other hand, is amazing. The rooms are lovely and clean with a modern touch, they were cleaned daily and breakfast was served at 7am instead of 8am, which was a lovely touch and a great start to the day. Thank you.

We were staying in Dounby on holiday nearby and visited The Smithfield Hotel for dinner with family and friends. We loved the food so much that we came back 3 nights during our weeks holiday in July/Aug 2023. Had to book as was very popular. The menu has a great choice and varied. Quality of the food was up there with the best and far outshone another hotel/restaurant nearby! We were served by lovely, friendly, young waiting staff. Some of our family had breakfast there which they said was fantastic and beautifully cooked. I tried to enter the hotel into the Orkney 2024 Tasting Awards but was unable to do so as I think it would be a high contender! Best food for us during our stay in Orkney!
