"Stayed here with a mate for the Goodwood Members' Meeting, the circuit is only 35 mins away. I arrived on the Friday evening for dinner, the bar was very busy with lots of friendly locals, good petrol head chat. I had a double room, large, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy, ample en suite bathroom. My mate had a twin room, similar size and quality. Got back downstairs to eat and drink, well kept beer, mostly Shepherd Neame (no Harveys in Sussex shame! I had the chilli one night and a lamb curry the other, both very good home made dishes, good portions, ideal after a day's motor racing in March. We could have had other curries of the week or pie of the week (chicken and chorizo . The staff are as friendly and helpful as their local customers and there's a small car park through the archway to the back of the pub. Failing that there's a decent sized public car park a 100 yds away. One caveat the bar closes at 12.30 on Friday and Saturday nights and the Friday was St Patrick's Day, if you aren't Irish and want an early night, it might be best to choose a room overlooking the High Street or bring ear plugs! However, a most enjoyable and relaxing stay, I'll definitely be back"

Although the Sunday lunch was reasonable, I have had better. The service was average and the value ok. We were disappointed overall

Went to the Chequer Inn for breakfast with the family, including kids. The breakfast menu overed a decent choice and was reasonably priced. Service was at the bar but attentive.

Food was quite nice and served by lovely boys to the table . One of the blonde ladies behind the bar really needs to improve her manner with the customers verging on the unfriendly ! It put me off and I wouldn't return.

No real gripes but no real pluses apart from the friendly staff. We were there on gloomy day and the room matched the weather. Probably a good place for a friendly pint of the excellent choice of ales. A bit dissapointing. View menu

My father, brother and myself stayed for a few nights for a family funeral. We had Sunday dinner on arrival and cooked breakfast every morning. The pub was very clean and well kept. The bedrooms were spacious and clean. We were also very taken by the friendly staff and boxer dog Connor.

This is just as a pub should be. This is not like a pub from some large chain. It is individual. Friendly staff. Cosy bars. Good range of beers..and wines. Really home cooked dishes....cooked to order not out of a bag like so many pubs. And you should see the Sunday lunches....Do visit if you in the area. You will be glad you did!

Been here a few times for coffee, really enjoy it as they offer filter coffee. Lovely old building, bit of a warren, but interesting walking through to get to the loo's. Only drawback is that they don't open until 10am, but that might be a pub thing. Would be better (for me) if they opened at 9:30 then I could use it when I come in for the monthly Saturday market. Have been a few times also to gig there, we were there a couple of weeks ago, and thanks to the chequers for paying for bands! , they want to become known as a music venue, so folks come along and support the them! It's a great night out, the back room is nice and big for both band and a few punters, and dancing! Nice staff, great location, even parking outside! Come on down!

I was a disappointed after visiting today. The food wasn't bad but it was very basic. I think it was due to the kitchen running out of food. We all ordered roast beef but the waiter came to let us know they only had chicken left which we all agreed to go for having paid for 3 roast beefs. When the food came it was fine but I was surprised that we were only dished up chicken, 3 large roast potatoes, a large pile of carrots and cabbage. After reading reviews on here we were expecting more vegetables. Seeing as we paid full price for 3 roast beef dinners it was a bit disappointing as we also weren't offered any refund for the simplified meal. I won't visit again.

"Service: 11/10 Starter: Calamari Duck Parfait - 10/10 Main Course 1: 50-Day Aged Fillet Mignon with Bordelaise Sauce (cooked *Blue*) - 100/10 Main Course 2: Fish and Chips - 9/10 Dessert: Hot Brownie - Over 9000! I want to extend my thanks to the front-of-house team for their warm welcome. Although we arrived a bit late, they were incredibly accommodating. Special thanks to Irvana (I hope I spelled that correctly) for providing excellent service! My steak experience took me on a nostalgic journey—like Anton Ego savoring his ratatouille in Gusto’s restaurant. It reminded me of a family meal in Holland during my childhood, where I had my first real steak. This may have even surpassed that memory! I was initially hesitant about dining at Miller and Carter since it's a chain restaurant, but if you're feeling the same way, let me assure you: don't be. While it may not be the cheapest option, it definitely deserves a smart-casual dress code that anyone who understands proper dining etiquette should respect. Curious, I browsed through other reviews, and I found it hard to believe anyone could leave a 1-star review without sounding like a “Karen.” It’s important to take reviews with a grain of salt—this is truly a fantastic restaurant! In summary, if you're a fan of steak, this place will take great care of you and provide excellent recommendations for how to enjoy your meal just the way you like it. Perfect!"
