"As we were staying in Orton village for a short break we called into The George Hotel Bar Restaurant for our tea on a couple of evenings (24th and 25th October 2022) and were given a very warm welcome from the two landladies and all the regulars at the bar. This is a very hospitable, local, village pub and we were soon drawn into the conversations taking place The food is typical pub fare but that does not detract from the quality and it is all, clearly, home made and not just heated up 'freezer ' food. Over the course of our two visits we enjoyed the Lakeland Burger, Southern Fried Chicken Burger (both with superb chunky chips) and the Chorizo Pasta Bake washed down with a couple of pints of Wainrights Bitter and all for a very reasonable price This is the kind of pub I like, honest, homely, welcoming and generous and I would highly recommend"

Really welcoming and friendly staff in a lovely country pub. Seems quite a “locals pub” and the food was ok but could have been much better.

Warmly welcomed by the landlady who also served us at our table. We all enjoyed our meals which were obviously home made and the syrup sponge was a particular favourite! An enjoyable and relaxing evening. View menu

We eat here on 5 consecutive nights and between us ate the menu food was always excellent every time portions are good. Food is freshly cooked and homemade the price's are amazing but better than all that is the service which is the best I've found anywhere don't let the dated but clean decor put you off this is truly a little jewel in Westmorelands crown

Perfect as a stop off on the coast to coast for my wife and I. Comfortable room and ensuite well stocked with tea bags and coffee. Wonderful cooked breakfast and packed lunch for our forward journey. Evening meals lovely too, nice bar and cosy atmosphere. Andy went out of his way to help us get to the hotel from Shap which was greatly appreciated. Good value and highly recommended

We had a fantastic experience at the George Hotel in Orton. Located in a charming neighborhood, this pub was ideal for Coast to Coast walkers. Bronagh and Andy were incredibly welcoming hosts. Our room was cozy and the food was top-notch. The drying room was a lifesaver for our wet clothes. Our visit to Orton was truly enjoyable, thanks in large part to the hospitality of Bronagh and Andy at the George Hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The George has recently come under new management by Neil Angela. My family and I had lunch there on Sunday and, being locals, we were excited to see the changes. While the restaurant could use some updating, the exceptional hospitality made up for it. We were greeted warmly by Neil, a fire was roaring in the fireplace, and candles were lit on this cold and dreary afternoon. The Orton Scar cafe could learn a thing or two from them, as their hospitality is lacking. The food was freshly cooked and piping hot. The steak pie, sourced from the amazing Dales Butcher in Kirkby Lonsdale, was exceptional. One of us had it with mashed potatoes and the other with chips, which were very good. The beer w...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
