"We were so looking forward to coming here with the family to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary as we had heard it was a very enjoyable experience… unfortunately it has changed hands and a new ownership. We began by ordering drinks which took 20 minutes to arrive and we still hadn’t been presented with a menu. We ordered our starters after a while to then be told 15 minutes after we ordered that they no longer had what the majority of us had ordered. After this, our starters took 1 hour and 15 minutes to come!! Three of us had the crab which was very dry. Having three hungry children with us it was a struggle when we were then waiting 1 hour and 40 minutes for our main courses to arrive. We were served by two embarrassed waitresses who clearly haven’t had much training. The roasts we ordered were cold and had a lack of gravy but we didn’t complain as this would mean waiting even longer. After looking forward to celebrating a big anniversary we all left disappointed with the service we received. Others around us were also complaining. Certainly wouldn’t recommend and won’t be returning."

I have to say, this pub is truly wonderful. The pint and the landlord are both brilliant. I highly recommend this pub. The landlord even arranged a taxi for me when I had missed the bus and my phone had died. I am extremely grateful to him. Thank you.

Went there with a group of friends and were served distinctly average food and it felt expensive for what we had. The decor was looking worse for wear and very little ambience. Such a shame as used to be brilliant. Would definitely recommend giving it a miss and try the Butt and Oyster down the road instead.

Average food and service are now blighted by unregulated parking scammers# infesting the car park. If you think the risk of a speculative invoice trying to extract extra money from you is worth all the hassle then by all means take the risk. Personally I will visit pubs who don't hand their customers over to third parties to be rinsed of extra cash! #MP's words in parliament

After taking our dog for a long walk, we decided to visit The Red Lion. We received a lovely warm welcome, and we were pleased to see that we could bring our dog inside. They even provided a bowl and dog biscuits for our pup, which was a nice gesture. We ordered the fish and chips and a burger, and both dishes were delicious - hot, well-presented, and very tasty. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great, and we will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful lunch! View menu

What a shame! Had booked for curry night with friends. By the time we ordered, all the curry specials had gone. Chose the monkfish curry from the main menu. The rice was bland and the fish tasted metallic. I left half of the meal. One of the dishes had no prawns, and the request for no aubergine was ignored. Friends who had the crumble puddings were cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen. The poor waitress looked harassed and embarrassed by the errors! To top it all, I couldn’t get rid of the metallic taste …. Until I threw up the entire supper the following day. Very sad to say the quality has gone from outstanding under the previous ownership to appalling. Don’t risk it!

We regularly go with friends for Sunday lunch and we all agreed it was the best by far. Friendly and welcoming staff, they ensured I had a comfy seat as I had asked and the roast chicken was superb. Homemade Yorkshire pudding, beautiful fresh vegetables including cauliflower cheese and what stands this place apart is we were offered more veg and gravy with no extra charge. Recently had lunch near Sudbury and was charged £4.50 for a tiny bowl of awful cauliflower cheese. The desserts were also excellent, can recommend the crumble and chocolate mousse. Two courses for £27 very reasonable. We met the chef who was so enthusiastic about his food and we will definitely be back. Thank you Red Lion...

Some people may overlook the Red Lion in Chelmondiston in favour of the very busy Butt Oyster down the lane towards Pin Mill. We would say … “ Don’t “. Had a really nice Starter that was very well prepared. And … what a Superb main Dinner. Tasty, Plentiful and delicious. Lots of meat on our plate that was cooked to perfection. We had the Roast Beef and there wasn’t one section of Fat in our cuts. Vegetables were fresh and the Cabbage was absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend this establishment for a visit. Pick Your time’s carefully as it can get busy and I’ve heard some customers did complain at the waiting time, but to be fair it was at the Sunday peak of around 3pm. Friendly Staff... View menu

We visited this restaurant for the fourth time, and unfortunately, we have had to send our food back multiple times. Even when the dish was returned, it still did not meet acceptable standards. On our last visit, we got sick the next day. We have tried to support our local restaurant, but we can no longer continue to do so. The atmosphere is lacking, and everything feels rushed, especially when we have to send our food back. It seems like there is a lack of quality control in the kitchen. If these issues are not resolved, the restaurant will struggle to survive as customers are not happy. The photos on the website do not accurately reflect the food served, and the prices are too high. Why drive all the way to Chelmondiston? Because, if you want one of the best Sunday lunches I have had this year, then the answer is YES, do it. There is a good size car park, the whole establishment is immaculately clean, as it shoud be. The restaurant area is divided into different sections and can seat around 60 people. The Sunday Lunch menu is a sensible size featuring at least two roasts with all the trimmings and enough options to suit most tastes. We decided to have two courses, I chose a starter, fried calamari in Aioli sauce and roast beef and my pal chose rump of lamb and a sticky toffee pudding for desert. You know you being well treated when a carafe of iced tap water and two gla...

"I hope we were just unlucky, and I feel sad writing this, but it wasn't the best experience this weekend. We stayed overnight and had the tasting menu. The Creppy family are departed a while now, and the staff such as Henri that stayed on are long gone, they set unbelievably high standards which were always going to be hard to meet. We loved the room we stayed in, but the rest of the experience was a bit awkward. I feel sorry for them as it was super hot and it must be difficult to get staff at the moment, but when you have paid £500 for one night and food inc wine then things can be a bit disappointing. From the start we could tell that they were under the cosh, the manager was sick, and we were told repeatedly how busy they were tonight. We asked to eat 30 mins later than booked which they said would help. We ordered a half bottle of champagne but had to wait about 15 minutes as the fridge was broken at it would not be cold. It arrived and wasn't cold enough really, then after 10 minutes in the ice bucket it was. Simultaneously other guests were told the coffee machine was also broken. A bit of a shame as we were celebrating a birthday and it sort of spoiled the moment waiting for a drink. Then ordered a 2014 Pomerol which to be honest I found really rather average, but that is the luck of the draw. The food was quite good, but only one course impressed us, the trout was good. The staff seem very downbeat to the point of it being awkward, one told us and another table to make as much mess as we like as it was her last shift. Others seemed very awkward and lacking confidence/a smile. Again, hard to get quality staff at the moment, but there seemed to be a lack of pride/confidence in what is being delivered. I also asked for cheese to finish off, in the past they had a glorious cheese cart with a huge selection of great cheeses. I accept maybe it was too hot for this, but I was simply given a plate of three cheeses, no one asked me if I would like to choose anything or for example do I like blue cheese. Then when it was delivered my wife tried one of them, liked it so asked what it was, and they didn't know what the cheese was which is probably not what they aspire to. makes me sad as the cheese at the Great House is stuff of legend. More minor stuff: Breakfast wise the coffee in the percolator was way too strong even for someone who likes strong coffee, a tiny shot of milk was not enough so we asked for more, would have been nice to be offered hot milk to make Cafe Au Lait etc. Also another minor point, the soap and shower gels were quite horrible, they stick to you and don't wash off, not something I'm usually bothered about, but the half empty containers looked like they had be refilled with something not very nice, or it was just never very good. When we checked out I think the manager may have been back, he did not ask us once how our stay had been so we had no real chance to say anything. We tried to be understanding and of course being British nothing was really a problem for us, but when you've spent £500 for a birthday it was all a bit disappointing and not nearly up to par. I sympathise that it might have been a difficult night, but to be honest it would have come off better if I hadn't been reminded every few minutes that they were so busy and everything going wrong. I'm not even sure that they were that busy, the terrace was out of bounds and the restaurant was 3/4 full. Matters were drawn in to focus the next day when we went to the Weavers Spa, and also for lunch at the Crown in Stoke by Nayland, staff were cheerful, helpful and great at both of these local places. Sorry for writing this negative review which I feel sad to have written about a place we used to love. Rooms: 4 Service: 2 Location: 4"
