"I have to agree with other reviewers on this one. The restaurant was really disappointing. The teenage staff were unfriendly, the prices were high, and the quality of the food was poor. The haddock tasted like it may have been a low-quality fish like tilapia. With a population of 16,000 people in this town, there is a high demand for a good fish and chip shop. It's not difficult to run a successful chippy - all you need is fresh haddock, cooked to order, and served with a smile. It's really as simple as that. Award-winning chip shops will tell you that freshness is the key to success."

This is the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Please cook the fish fresh. There have been numerous reviews with the same feedback. Please take it into consideration.

Decent chippy, when the food is fresh. When it's delivered its hit or miss. Kid-friendliness: They have a small kids menu. Service: Take out Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £1–10

I hope the owners pay attention to the reviews because this place is declining. The chips were greasy, cold, and had a strange taste. I paid £6 for a sausage supper that ended up in the trash because it was not good. Why doesn't Penicuik have a good fish and chip shop? View menu

Had a half fish supper, fish was fine chips were absolutely rotton and for the price so so so disappointing. Over £7 a 'half ' fish and disgusting chips. I rarely leave reviews but I just had to leave a review as it was awful. Would not recommend. Food: 1 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 1

This restaurant is improving. The food is good and there have been no errors during my recent visits. I typically order take-out for dinner and the price per person ranges from £10 to £20. I would give the food a rating of 5, the service a rating of 4, and the atmosphere a rating of 4.

Really hit or miss, had some decent enough (though not at all outstanding) fish chips from here, but after the one we had two weeks ago we'll not be bothering again. Haddock supper was definitely not haddock, it was dry, mushy, and the batter was soggy and wet. At the price of a fish supper these days it should at least be edible. View menu

I absolutely adore this small fish and chip shop. There is always a cheerful atmosphere, the owner is always in a good mood, and they are willing to cook anything fresh for you. It's the perfect spot to dine in for dinner, and why would you want to go anywhere else? The service, food quality, and overall atmosphere all deserve a perfect score of 5. The price per person ranges from £10 to £20.

The fritters I was served at this restaurant were probably the worst I've ever had. They were dripping with oil, burnt, flavorless, and falling apart. I would recommend avoiding this place and heading to The Penny Cook, which is only a 2-minute walk away. The service was for take-out, the meal type was dinner, and the price per person was between £1 and £10. I rated the food a 1, the service a 4, and the atmosphere a 2.

"I am sitting in my room at the sun inn as I am writing. It's a Sunday. I checked in at 8 15. The one young employee who was in the building was professional but informed me on arrival that the kitchen had closed. Bummer but it is a Sunday. Upon asking when the bar would close he told me 10pm. I decided to go to the shops and buy some cold sausage rolls and a bottle of wine to mitigate the early closing and grabbed a quick single beer in Dalkeith in a bar that closed at 11. My intention was to pay more for somewhere I could have several drinks without driving but I tried to make the best of my origional plan. I got back to the sun inn at 930 to find not a solitary light on and figured I'll watch some TV instead. Only the TV didn't work. I dismounted it after trying to configure settings on the 2 controls. The sky box was not connected sinse it was a flat wall mount and there was only a single accecible hdmi port, out of three, that could be used. That was already oucupied by the fire stick. Now it is sitting on the dresser since it cannot be remounted with both availible devices connected. 40 minutes of fooking around and nothing has changed. The bar is closed. No night porter, no TV, no breakfast and a broken bathtub. All the reasons I paid the extra to come here instead of the cheaper airport option have be removed. The room is nice though. It's as good as an airport one minus the stains on the headboard of the bed."

"Having successfully completed a major project I took my team out as a small thank you. There were 5 of us and we arrived around 1030h for breakfast. We were greeted by the very .lovely Amy, who promptly seated us. She was polite, friendly and attentive. She took our drinks orders, then our breakfasts. We all opetd for the full Scottish at under a tenner each. The meal was fabulous, well cooked, piping hot and presented on high quality flatware with good cutlery. The sausages had a delicious crisp outer, the bacon was well done but not hard, the mushrooms were served in a wee bowl with chilli oil. The eggs were perfect, accompanied by a slice of chunky bread, haggis and black pudding. Beans finished it off brilliantly. The teapot was quirky and delightful. Alison, the owner was not only beautiful but very charming with it. She was involved in the serving of our meals and chatted to us as she served us, making us feel more than welcome. Five breakfasts with assorted lattes, cappuccinos and teas was under £70 so very reasonably priced too. I left a well deserved tip and Alison kindly let me know that the full tip always went to the serving staff, so very ethical too. My colleagues were all as suitably impressed as I was. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and the only shame is that my time in Bonnyrigg is over, and I dearly wished I'd found The Beetroot sooner."
