"Used to be good, but had a poor experience last night. We went as a family of four and had a meal in the left bank restaurant. The table service was quite poor and the bill had a £13 service charge slapped on automatically. The total bill was £126 plus tip, making £139. I left £130 truly believing it was sufficient under the circumstances. The waiter came back twice saying it wasn't enough money. I explained once that the service charge was optional and that I have left enough including an appropriate tip. This was rejected and the waiter again insisted I pay the full amount as it was not enough. I explained again about the tip. He came back yes again to query how I would make up the shortfall in the bill. I was forced to stand my ground and insist in front of everyone that I wasn't paying the full tip. Automatically slapping on £13 tip for poor service is one thing. To then repeatedly question and confront a customer over not paying the full tip in front of everyone is quite another thing altogether. I left the restaurant feeling both humiliation at the confrontation but also annoyance knowing that actually I was right. The tip is optional, discretionary, and voluntary. Putting it automatically on the bill could be seen as a helpful reminder, thank you, if you want to see it that way, but repeatedly insisting it is paid and that I have made a mistake in leaving a smaller tip and ignoring my explanation is just plain wrong."
