"we booked at the Dockray after walking past it on the Aira Force walk. It looked good so we looked online for the menu which was varied. I e-mailed the owner to make a booking and he got back immediately, a good start. We ordered lamb shank, burger, curry and scampi. All mains were good sized portions served quickly but all freshly cooked. The owner was friendly, drinks also served quickly. We couldn't fault anything. The decor was nice, unspoilt country pub."

"The Travellers Rest is the perfect place to go after a day on the fells. You can certainly see why it's so popular with walkers, being just up the road from Ullswater and the first pub down from the Hellvelyn range, the views are 360° stunning. We ordered two gin and tonics which were startingly overpriced for house gin (between £23 24). To add to the woe and to my absolute disbelief, terrible music was playing through the speakers and there was a swarm of flies outside. I understand the latter can't be helped, however upon moving inside the fly situation became worse and no effort was made to counter this. The icing on the bang average cake was that the Travellers Rest does not pay for Spotify premium despite being ridiculously overpriced. I'd like to see some return on the ludicrous profits on their overpriced drinks. I think with lower prices, less flies and better tunes, this three could be bolstered to a four although this review was reinforced by a man outside making a remarkable fool of himself. I'm not saying don't visit, just make sure you've got a bottle of Jungle Formula and enough pennies to make the climb up the hill worth your time."

"what can I say we are regular customers that we believe that they do the best steak that I have ever had and the service is the best very friendly staff nothing is any effort that we have just been for Sunday midday and it is wow the meat. is simply perfect and the bratkartoffels are amazing and all very good price we strongly recommend it is one most to visit is they are here on their vacation"

"Stayed overnight at the H and F in their dog friendly accommodation 'The Salutation Inn ' across the road from the pub hotel. Dog friendly room was spacious with bowls and bed area for the dog and large double bed with large plasma tv for our comfort. Tea and coffee facilities including biscuits. Room was very clean and neatly furnished. Dinner and breakfast across the road at the Horse and farrier pub had facility to include your dog on non carpeted dining area and staff were welcoming and professional. Food was excellent nd service very efficient . Would definitley recommend this to others- perfect for walkers, close to Keswick and you can take your dog."

"Recently stayed at Temple Sowerby and needed a nearby Skysports venue...The Board and Elbow was the choice and what a great choice it was... Gaz and his staff were excellent.. A very dog friendly pub with TV's scattered around the pub so they could show...different football matches at the same time.The food was excellent,my favourite was the steak&ale pie.. A good selection of beers and along with the food all was good value for money prices. Not only were the staff very friendly to us,our dogs received special treatment with a good supply of treats . So if you're in Penrith,looking for a great pub,this is the one for you.. Thanks Gaz and all your staff..Brilliant..."

"After reading the reviews, we were excited to try something different like a tofu or bean curry, or tofu fish and chips. We were hoping for more options than just the typical veggie burger that many pubs offer as their vegan choice. The staff was very helpful, but the vegan menu was limited to a burger, sausage, or pizza without cheese (they did not have vegan cheese). The desserts were underwhelming, with only vegan ice cream available and even the fruit crumble made with butter. There is definitely room for improvement and it would be nice to see more creativity put into the vegan options, similar to their regular menu. While I am only giving 2 stars for the food, the service was excellent. (Review updated on 2023-09-22)"

"Just about only cafe open on Sunday morning, small cafe, we had coffee and scones. Everything was fine, reasonably priced, nice coffee. Asked for scone to be heated 10 secs in microwave, Heating a scone makes all the diff. Jam before cream ?? that was the question well I put jam on then clotted cream !! the cream was a bit firm and hard to spread on top of jam so recommmed if cream firm put it on first then the jam."

"Not been here before but previous reviews regarding the landlady are borne out in my visit. Visited at the weekend, consequently very busy and very noisy. Menu is more interesting than most pubs although I cannot say the food was especially good, though not bad. Seems to depend on which dish you choose. Service from the young staff was good, no long delays. The landlady seemed fine too, until it was time to get the bill. I went to the bar where everyone behind it was busy. I waited for a few minutes, then, beginning to feel invisible, I waved discreetly to the landlady, who was doing something with glasses and talking to customers she obviously knew. She said these people were waiting too, although I couldn't see anyone serving them. I simply asked her to prepare my bill as soon as she was ready. It was brought to my table fairly quickly so no complaints there. But when I went to pay it she seemed happy to ignore me once more, again while doing stuff with glasses. Fortunately one of the young staff was able to show her how customer service should be done and took my payment. The landlady's attitude seems so unnecessary. Perhaps she regarded us as tourists, though we are relatively local. Bein local I know better pubs in the area and won't be returning to the Stag."

"Amazing quality food with great taste! The staff was excellent and made sure everything was ok with our meals. 100% recommended! Portion sizes were big but not complaining as we left with full stomachs. Not too pricey either... you pay for what you get. Great atmosphere, Lovely place to eat. Would go back again. Thank you!"

"The most amazing cafe in the whole of the Lake District! And such great vegan options! We got the vegetable wrap with homemade hummus and let me tell you that salad was sensational : The way they cut that cucumber was so inventive even my sister was happy and she usually wouldn't even eat cucumber! The sweet potato was cooked beautifully : We tried to recreate the wrap at home and honestly it was not the same : The staff were amazing and welcoming and the takeaway packaging was environmentally friendly. I've been thinking about that wrap ever since and I'm so sad that I live so far away in London but when I'm back in Penrith, I'll be there for my wrap ;"

"Sunday lunch was fine three courses , prawn cocktail (photo) roast beef ,Yorkshire pudding, mixed buttered veg ,empty plate says it all, although daughter wanted her steak medium rare with her meal, sorry to say it was rather over well done, not very good there more of a 1 star on that one , desserts well the story on that one is in photo 's too, the difference in size and quality varied hugely, disappointing raspberry roulade, but a rather large almost a sharing dessert on the hot fudge cake served with ice cream, kellys , or cream ."

"Four of us visited on a Friday evening having booked, which I recommend as the restaurant was very busy. Having been shown to our table and our drinks order taken we perused the menu. When it came to taking our food order, we had a couple of people with allergies and our waitress was a pain to ensure there would be no issues by checking direct with the kitchen and advising us what was “off limits”. We opted to forgo starters and go straight to main courses. When the food arrived it was well presented, served piping hot and was certainly very tasty as revealed by the clean plates returned to the kitchen. After a short rest we were all able to indulge in one of the great deserts on offer. All the staff were really friendly and helpful and we will certainly be back when again in the area."

"Nice surroundings, good choice of beers, spirits etc food was average at best and represented poor value for money against other local pubs we tried. Overall, its not top of the list of pubs i would recommend in the Eden area. This was our second visit under the new owners and unfortunately the seond visit was no better than the first. Whilst the menu was appealing, the dishes we ordered (mains and desserts) did not prove to be either astounding or an exciting experience. A real shame."

"Overrated and overpriced!!! Avoid at all costs We passed some really decent services to get to the Tebay service Southbound on our way back from Scotland. The whole idea of a farm shop appealed to us. The food was unappelaing and tasteless. the pea and mint soup had no mint taste. The sandwiches priced at over £6.00 had a 1 leaf od unidentifable salad and maybe twi tiddly widdly pieces of chicken. The fish and chips priced at £11.25 left a lot to be desired. We then had to walk to the ther side of the area to pay for our hot meals and join other people in ques contravening the recommended one way system. There were people waiting to pay for their drink, takeaway sandwiches and hot drinks and one person behind the till. So by the time it was our turn to pay and eat the meal which was already bland and tasteles to begin with was rendered unedible. What a waste of one hour and almost £30. Had to stop again at next services and get burgers for kids. Unfortunately there are no minus stars in the rating."

"I recently visited a fantastic restaurant adorned with automobile decor. I enjoyed a pleasant early dinner in the lovely garden. The menu had a limited but satisfactory selection, even for vegetarians like myself. The staff was accommodating when I asked to switch out some of the side dishes. I started with delicious homemade onion rings, followed by a mushroom and leek pie that was also made on the premises. The minted mushy peas and herbed mashed potatoes were excellent. Overall, the pub food was top-notch and reasonably priced. I highly recommend this place for a great meal."

"Visited with granddaughter shared a toastie as we only called in for drinks. Granddaughter was thrilled with the various mugs the hot chocolate came in. We are working our way through them . Very clean various homemade cakes with gluten free options. Staff friendly. If visiting a d looks busy remember there is a lovely garden area at the rear."

"food was alright very pricy for what it was but captive audience it’s such a scenic spot right in the middle of the village centre. its staff is what lets it down. when we arrived the restaurant was a bit of a mess admittedly it was very busy it took a while to be seated and the main larger set manager was stood at the entrance (host? chatting to people and didn’t really seem intrested in the guests at all also didn’t seem interested in helping his staff that seemed to be suffering running all over the place when we was finally seated a staff member had to wipe down a highchair for us, I did feel sorry for a poor girl who was our server she was lovely and very apologetic about the wait couldn’t fault her or the other male manager who took our drinks order and seems to be playing a support role as he was all over he did apologise for the wait on drinks and food and said it was due to staff illnesses which really can’t be helped I think you could do with retraining some management on how to actually manage as he can’t even effectively seat people in timely manner and rather than wiping down a table and apologising when seating guests lets his staff go running all over and having irate other guest for long wait on seating he’d rather stand idly by and finish his conversations"

"I want to provide some feedback in this review. The pub is located in a beautiful area and there are many tourist signs that direct you to it. The pub has a lot of potential and it is clear that the new owner is enthusiastic. He was very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, we were the only customers on a Sunday afternoon. We were looking forward to a traditional Sunday roast, but were disappointed to learn that it is only served occasionally. The menu seemed fine for a pub and promised homemade dishes. I won't go into detail about the food, but it did not meet our expectations. I wish the new owners the best of luck and I truly hope they can make the business a success."

"The Fitzgerald concert was wonderful. It's great to have such a stimulating venue so close to Penrith with a mix of puppetry, drama, exhibitions and a whole range of live music. Always a great evening out. Always interesting crafts on sale and excellent coffee, lovely restaurant with mostly vegetarian dishes, including sticky toffee pudding and my personal favourite potato, leek and watercress soup!"
