"What a disappointing experience that was. We’re visiting Glenridding for the week and on our first night headed over to the Inn on the Lake. As we love our food in the Lakes the Stamp House and Lake Road Kitchen in Ambleside are 2 or our favourites we had planned a slap up meal in the hotel’s Lake View Restaurant later in the week. However as we’d made the long drive from Bath that day we decided on something more casual on our first evening and ended up in The Orangery, as the Ramblers Bar was closed for a private function. We weren’t given the warmest welcome by the maitre d’ only offering us an outdoor table despite there seemingly being ample seating indoors however given the views of Ullswater we decided to make do and keep our coats on. It wasn’t off to a great start as couple of menus were plonked on the table with no offer of drinks. We settled on a pair of fish pies with a portion of chips to share but sadly what came out was one of the blandest meals we’ve ever had. Despite clearly containing bits of salmon and prawn it tasted of neither. There was no evidence of parsley in the sauce either despite being advertised. The mash was quite stodgy and a little cold and the sauce seemed to have split. The whole thing should have been considerably hotter and a lot more seasoned. The accompaniments were equally disappointing. It was advertised as coming with carrots and fennel, but instead we got some sad looking boiled (or maybe microwaved) carrots, cauliflower and broccoli florets which had been shown no love whatsoever. The chips were also fairly cold and some were slightly undercooked. As we’d had such a long drive and we’re so hungry (and as everywhere else appeared to be shut or busy) we grimly refuelled. No waiting staff came and checked back in with us, so as we’d already been made to pay upfront, we just upped and left once we were done. Sadly that experience means we’re very unlikely to go back to try their fine dining option later in the week."

Impressive interior, brilliant view of Ullswater, staff were attentive, however the meal feel short of expectations.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch in a peaceful setting that exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend this charming restaurant. While it may be a bit pricey, the quality of the food makes it well worth the cost.

Had a lovely light lunch and coffee in The Orangery. Service was excellent and waiting staff were very attentive and informative. Food was lovely and the onion bhaji flatbread topping was freshly deep fried and very delicious! Alternative milk available soya and oat Setting was lovely spacious, clean and comfortable with stunning views out of the plentiful windows. Cannot wait to return. Dogs were welcome too.

We ate here two nights out of the three we were staying at the hotel. The first night, two of the main courses had run out, even though we were there at 7.00pm on a Friday! No alternatives were offered and this was very limiting, as they were meat/fish dishes. The following evening, the menu was replenished, though the soup was the same as the previous night. I had the reinstated fish pie and my husband the reinstated lamb stew. The vegetables were well cooked (firm as we both like), but bland and fairly tasteless. No herbs or seasoning... just boiled and dumped on the plate. My fish pie was more potato than fish in sauce, and there was very little sauce for the fish, never mind the bland ve...

My wife I had a lovely afternoon snack here then booked in for dinner later the same day. The snacks were extremely good: I had toasted teacake with butter jam my wife treated herself to the gluten free sticky toffee pudding. Both were really tasty. For dinner my wife enjoyed another gluten free option, soup of the day followed by feta cheese with sun dried tomatoes. She thoroughly enjoyed it. I chose the Parmesan crusted chicken with warm potato salad tasty but I thought the chicken was slightly over cooked. I chose the Apple tart with toffee sauce for dessert that was tasty but falling apart with rather soggy pastry. And it’s those small but important details that result in four stars as o...

Went to the restaurant for lunch in this beautifully set location. We decided to dine here instead of the nearby cafe to treat ourselves whilst on holiday, when we came across this picturesque town. We greeted warmly at the hotel reception. Unfortunately it was a very poor dining experience, service was slow and we had to chase at every stage of service and it was as if they had forgotten our mains. Had to order my toddlers meal at the bar to ensure he would be fed. And when our food finally arrived, it wasn’t reflective of what we ordered for example, Moroccan dish, which was described to include ingredients such as cranberries but when the dish arrived, it was a British Indian style curry...

Delicious food (beetroot falafel burger) and incredible staff, who made a rather damp and scruffy camper feel very welcome on a wet evening. The venue is intimidatingly beautiful when you are underdressed. But the staff were wonderful and my drink arrived before I had got my coat off. The table for this visit had been booked well in advance, for my sister and niece who had a planned stay in a nearby cottage. I, on the other hand, was unexpected until the previous week, but the booking had been amended with no problem and about 5 days notice. I had not been expecting to meet my sister in the lakes, so I literally had nothing to wear , only bringing clothes for the hills. I arrived earlier tha...

We had called up in advance to try any make a booking with the ramblers bar, but we were told that we couldn't make a booking and just to turn up. When we turned up the ramblers bar was closed for a wedding, information that we should have been notified when we called up originally. We then tried to get a table in the Orangery restaurant. Multiple members of the restaurant staff acknowledged that we were waiting for a table and asked if we were staying in the hotel (which we weren't), but seemed happy enough to leave us waiting rather than confirming if there was or wasn't an available table. During this time there was no evidence that they seemed to be checking their reservation lists or tr...

We ate here on our first of two nigths staying at the next door Ullswater Inn in Glenridding. The Orangery is a beautiful room. It is spacious. with nice views out. They could have crammed more tables in, but they haven 't which gives the dining experience a lovely ambience. The service was very good. So why only an average rating? It 's because we didn 't feel the food was better than average. We started by sharing foccacia with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For £7.50 we got two small pieces of average foccacia with a very vinegary dip. It wasn 't good and even it had been it wouldn 't have been worth it. For main course, one of us had steak and ale pie with seasonal veg and mash with gra...
