"Meeting friends here for Sunday lunch this afternoon, we 've all come away slightly disappointed by our choice. The Black Horse is immaculate, having clearly had a decent budget spent on interior decoration and furnishings, with a cherishing of its connections to nearby Pinewood the walls are festooned with black and white photos of famous film stars and directors who have been past customers. At the same time, the bathrooms are labelled stable boys and stable girls , playing on the obvious coach house traditions from a pub at a crossroads. All very nice, as were the lovely staff who greeted us as we arrived and brought us our food. But that 's where the problem lay. All of the niceties failed to disguise the fact that our food was really very disappointing. Five had opted for the roast beef, all agreeing that the beef was very well done, with rock hard Yorkshire puddings and soggy broccoli. I 'd opted for bangers and mash, to be presented with a small mound of mash, three sausages and a large bowl of peas. The mash was really quite inadequate a portion, certainly in relation to the peas portion. As we were amongst the first of the day (1245 for 1), this disappointing food offer seemed hard to explain there was no rush to handle. We were at least ten minutes into the meal before being asked if all was well some of our party would have complained if we 'd had time to accept a second run at the meal, but we didn 't. So, with a bill of £73 for four adults and three kids, only one kid seemed happy with her meal, while everyone else left a little less than impressed. Definitely, it could have been better."

"Me my boyfriend booked a trip to London for my birthday. We had booked this restaurant as a part of the Virgin Experience offer. First impressions of the restaurant were that staff were attentive with taking our coats and hanging them up ect although shortly after we were shown to our seats our impressions changed. The man who was waiting our table was an extremely rude and arrogant man. We are young adults and both of us fussy with our appetites. We explained to the man we would prefer to miss the cocktails and happy to not have a drink. He offered us a non alcoholic cocktail and i politely declined, which seemed to aggravate him. He made several comments about our eating/drinking and how we should have a drink! This wasn’t in a polite tone it was plain rude and felt slightly insulting. You also have to pay extra for Water which they offer you and if my parents hadn’t been here before me i wouldn’t have been any the wiser that they charge you for it. The waiter also asked if we would like starters which we opted out of and again made rude comments and laughed at us. We wouldn’t have had to pay any extra for the starter’s so couldn’t quite understand the issue. The meal itself was a small portion, but nevertheless delicious. We both had a steak which one of the only things on the menu you didn’t need to pay a surplus charge for. I felt that this was very misleading as on the Virgin website it didn’t state about any extra charges for items and we weren’t aware of this until we were in the restaurant ordering our food. We payed the extra for our sides which was about £4.50 per side, a small portion. Although understandable as this is London prices for you. Can’t fault the food and the pudding again was small but very rich and delicious. This also cost an extra fee of £4.50 Overall a ‘free’ meal that i had paid for with a voucher cost us around £50 extra than already expected. You pay a service fee at the end which quite frankly i wanted to opt out of but felt too awkward due to the rude man who shoved the card reader in our face before we had chance to opt out. I wouldn’t return here as the dining experience was average and i would prefer to spend my somewhere more worthwhile."

"I came here to celebrate my wife's birthday. It is a nice place. It was my first time trying Beef Wellington, and although the pastry was a bit overdone, the beef inside was good. The gravy was one of the best I've had. My girlfriend really enjoyed her steak as well. The only downside was the slow service and difficulty getting someone's attention. I had booked a 50% off mains deal through OpenTable, but it was not recognized when I arrived. I also felt a bit embarrassed when I asked about it, as sometimes places dispute such offers after you have already ordered. I had also tried to arrange a birthday surprise for my girlfriend with sparklers, but when I asked one of the waiters, they just told us to order dessert and we only got "happy birthday" written on her plate. Overall, the food was good, but the service could be better."

"We've only been here for drinks in the past, and it's got a very lovely cute yet fancy interior which has a really warm atmosphere. We returned yesterday for a Sunday roast, and we were all gravely disappointed. Meat was flavourless. Roast potatoes were soft and cold. Gravy was watery and weak. Unlimited Yorkshire puddings were indeed unlimited, but they were not Yorkshire puds. You picked it up and it would crumble into sawdust. They tasted and felt like Styrofoam. None of us came close to finishing our meals, despite paying £17 for our dinners. Will not be returning for food ever again. P.S. don't get their Peacock Farm lager, it tastes like Coors light. They have much better real beers and ales on tap."

"While the food is good the service is very poor. We arrived for our reservation to be told our table was not ready. No problem, we waited in the bar for 25 minutes and then went back to find they’d forgotten about us and had no table for us. They eventually found us a table, but it wasn’t laid up fully and they didn’t sort it out. We then waited another 15 minutes before we gave up and went to the bar to get someone to take our food order. After our food arrived we again waited for a very long time and eventually had to call someone over to order the children’s ice creams. They then came out with the wrong flavours. We asked for dessert menus and waited 15 minutes for those. After another 20 minutes we gave up, went to the bar to pay and had dessert and coffee at home. I’m not very impressed with the service at all. Last week I was there someone ordered a slice of cake only to be given a plate and told “you’ll have to pick it up with your fingers, I don’t know where the tongs are” he also wasn’t offered any cutlery to eat his cake with. Such a shame as the pub is lovely."

"Shocking food. Expensive. Wasn’t worth even half of what we paid. Poor quality. Ordered fish and chips, fish was ‘empty’, with soggy batter. It came with around 9-10 chips. It was inedible. Husbands burger coated in black crunchy bits off the grill. Came with around six chips, no cheese despite paying £1,50 for cheese and he said it was awful meat. Daughter had tomato pasta. It was dried up and stuck together. No sauce. It was supposed to come with garlic bread. It didn’t. They told her a minute before it was being served to her. She had a handful of pasta in the bottom of the bowl. She left hungry. She would have had enough if she was maybe 6 years old, but she’s 19. The outing was £60. Dreadful food and spoilt our anniversary. Really wished we’d gone elsewhere. Will never return and will be emailing to complain. Save your money."

"We were at the pub for the Summer Soulstice evening. It was good fun with fantastic music, albeit the music changed later in the evening and it wasn't our cup of tea (a lot of others felt the same). It was a fun evening and all enjoying themselves. The pub and garden were packed. The toilet situation was terrible the queues and the disabled toilet was out of order not good. Staff friendly one in particular, who seemed to be everywhere and doing everything was a lovely lady called Alexia I believe. Such a great person and working very hard. It was busy at the bar. We got the same round in for most of the evening so we knew the price. Our last round of the evening had one less drink in it, but the pricing was the same as the other rounds. Very strange. Not sure if a lot of the bar staff are experienced in customer service either. Lots good, but difficult to query the bill or discuss anything when it was so busy. Our second year at Summer Soulstice, we will be back next year as it's a very good event."

"Having regularly eaten at The Talisman for the last 6 years I was really disappointed with my experience this time, the service was quite poor, drinks were wrong, waitress seemed to have difficulty in understanding us , we were never offered desserts even half an hour after finishing our meal and had to ask for the dessert menu when we were offered coffee. The waitress just was not very attentive, we often ran out of drinks and werent offered more. The chocolate fondue dessert was awful, watery chocolate is not a fondue! Worst experience i've had here. Will not be eating here again for a while, will still to just drinking there."

"Food and wine very good, very tasty and served piping hot with veggies nice and hot too. The children's chicken pie was very tasty with very nice pieces of chicken in and not swimming in too much sauce which can be the case. Desserts were very tasty too. Our waitress was not as good as the one we had two weeks ago. She was inattentive and more interested in cleaning the empty tables and sweeping the floor. We had to ask her each time we needed something even though the place was not at all full at the time we went. When she brought the wine she just plonked it on the table with some glasses and walked away. Our waitress on the previous visit was super, no comparison this time. Poor service can put people off returning somewhere despite the food being good."

"This was our first visit to the Monmouth Ash but will certainly not be our last. We wanted an early lunch after an appointment and thought we would give it a try. Both exterior and interior have a good ambience and we were greeted by a very pleasant young lady behind the bar. We had a pate starter to share followed by ham, eggs and chips, which is something I often use as a measure of decent pub food. We were not disappointed. The pate was tasty and the main was three thick, tasty ham slices with two eggs and very nice triple cooked chips. My wife had the piccalilli, but I gave it a miss, as I think with HE&C anything other than tomato ketchup is sacrilege! We were too full for a dessert. We were also delighted to find, when we were presented with the bill, that there is a discount of 33% on a Monday. Result!!"

"Visited here for lunch today as it 's our local but in recent times we have opted for the Holly Blue. We should have gone to the Holly Blue today too. They run the same menu but the standard of food is not. Today we ordered 1 of the Club sandwich (no mayo or butter) and 2 ham and cheese toasties (but one as a sandwich with no mustand mayo for toddler). Nice easy. After paying I was told that the club sandwich is mixed chicken mayo. Menu says Toasted Club Sandwich: crisp streaky bacon, succulent chicken breast, tomato, shredded cos, mayonnaise, on sliced white or wholemeal bloomer, skin on fries and this is what you get at the Holly Blue. It doesn 't say chicken mayo. Staff really couldn 't have cared left and as a result I ended up paying more for an alternative as they aren 't selling what they advertise. I ordered a chicken burger (no mayo) and the girl came back after I 'd ordered to confirm it had BBQ mayo and was that ok....... obviously not as it 's mayo proper hard work! The Ham and Cheese sandwich came out covered in mustard mayo and was sent back when it came back out it came out with no butter just ham, cheese and bread £6.75 that cost! No apology. This pub has massively gone downhill since the former manager has moved on and we won 't be returning."

"once more, no good experience. Menu was very limited, extremely expensive, menu was unreadable by very small font and bad lighting. I ordered steak, and said to the very nice and polite waitress, I will cook it medium too well, but I want to be able to eat it. No blood please, so make sure it is shown without blood. That didn't happen, and the steak was very ****. You obviously don't have a real, experienced cook. Steak is not difficult to cook exactly how the customer likes it, nothing could be easier. My wife and son ate their choice, but there was so little to choose. The drinks were very expensive, I myself ordered a warehouse with lime and was calculated 65p for the lime, although I lacked so much storage. No other good, customer-specific restaurant costs for the drop of lime. There were only a few people eating on a Saturday night, but we booked and eat in a restaurant in Hassocks at least once a month, large menu choice and full of people every time, and the same drinks are at least one third lower than the Hangleton Manor, calculate for lime and exce3llent lighting. We know about the years that were eaten at the Manor in Hangleton, and are not even satisfied."

"Due to a technology malfunction our meal took 40 minutes to arrive. It would have been good PR to have at least offered a complimentary drink or dessert. The food was fine although I would not have ordered the cauliflower cheese if I had known it was very light on the cheese sauce. The table behind had two dogs which created more noise than is really acceptable. I have eaten there several times and have not had a bad experience before. Hopefully it was just a blip and I would probably go back there again."

"My wife and son also ordered from the limited menu but found the choices to be lacking. The drink prices were exorbitant; I ordered a drink with lime and was charged £0.65 for just the lime, which was disappointing given the portion size. On a Saturday night, there were very few diners, which was surprising. We dine out at least once a month in Hassocks, where the menu selection is great and the atmosphere is always bustling. The same drinks we ordered there are at least a third cheaper than at Hangleton Manor, where the lighting is much better and the overall experience far superior. We’ve visited Hangleton Manor over the years, but we have yet to leave satisfied."

"I had a lovely time meeting up with a friend with great food, service and atmosphere. The one big dampener was being phoned the day after by House Martin, with the person telling me I left without having payed. I explained in as much detail as I could, how we did pay our bill which was split in two with both of us paying in cash. I also provided the time we left. This appeared to be accepted but I was then phoned again later in the day with another person making the same accusation. I again explained in detail and was asked if I could provide proof. I hadn't taken the receipt I never do) and having paid in cash had no other proof other then my word. I also said how it would be quite stupid to leave without paying after having booked online supplying my full name, email address and mobile number. This experience has really been quite upsetting as I have never and would never do any such a thing. The way I feel currently I probably wont go back to House Martin again which is rather sad as I really enjoyed every aspect of it. I had also been there a few weeks ago for the first time also pre-booked) and had lovely time both times around. The lesson learned for me is to never pay with cash again when going out for dinner."

"On one of our previous visits we encountered a small problem with service but otherwise our experiences prior to this latest visit had been very good. Sadly on this occasion it was very poor. Having been given the opportunity to review the menu and make our choice we were then told that three of our selections were not available, so the choice was very limited and the service starting from there was poor with us needing to chase up even the jugs of water we had been offered, (they turned up with desert). Perhaps even worse was the poor quality of the main course food. Clearly the restaurant was understaffed for the number of customers and this reflected in both the service and cooking activities. A disappointing evening all round and means I can not plan to use this Pub/Restaurant again."

"I must have been for sure very unlucky, but this is the restaurant where I ate probably the worst two dishes in my life. In both cases, the two courses disappeared under a prevailing flavour, erasing all the remaining ingredients. As an appetizer we got the cheviche combination that was basically raw fish fully covered by tons of red hot pepper: you could easily take away all the fish in the dish and the taste would remain exactly the same. As a main course we had a spicy tuna poke where all the wonderful fresh ingredients (tuna, rice, green peas, carrots and more) were hidden behind a blanket of citrus making the whole bowl, citrus apart, totally tasteless: like chewing a huge candy. The gourmet experience was so devastating to obliterate the nice atmosphere of the venue, the service, nice and professional (including nicely receiving appalling feedback from unhappy clients), and everything pleasant around: not even the efforts of the team could justify the chef's disaster tonight. I've been providing feedback on restaurants and hotels from all over the world on this website for years, and I am going for a 1/5 evaluation with no hesitation or regret."
