"To say this place is a hidden gem is an understatement! The atmosphere was electric, the service phenomenal and the food was to die for! To start, three of us had the beef ragu arancini and it did not disappoint. Crunchy breadcrumbs covered rice with a soft bite and hiding in the centre was a delicious ragu with melted stringy mozzarella cheese! The burnt shallot aioli added the final touch. Our other friend went with the fiery chicken wings. The portion was generous and the coating had a warming kick. Crisp and full of flavour but soothed by the blue cheese dip. The mains consisted of two rump steaks and two plates of belly pork. The rump steak was cooked to each of our likings (medium rare and medium) served alongside the garlic sautéed potatoes, crunchy onion rings, mushroom and tomato with the perfect amount of peppercorn sauce to accompany. To say the steak was melt in your mouth is an understatement! I can hand on heart say it was the best steak I have EVER had! My plate was almost wiped clean I also got to try the pork belly. The fat had a wonderful crunch, the belly itself was tender and the stuffing was divine (I am not a fan of raisins but they worked so well) For dessert… I went with the chocolate brownie served with a cherry compôte and vanilla ice cream. Every mouthful left me wanting more and more. The compôte was slightly sharp against the sweet chocolate and the vanilla ice cream just cleansed the palette. Also on order were the mulled wine poached pear (2) Something I didn’t get to try as the they were devoured in seconds. From the empty bowls it is clear to say that they were delicious (served with champagne and strawberry sorbet) I honestly cannot wait to return and have another fantastic meal here (steak night for myself and the missus) Thank you so so much for an amazing dining and service experience!"

"I have been quite reluctant to write this but its been bugging me all week. Me and my friend came here for drinks on Saturday we had a table booked in the evening. Upon greeting we was told we could not bring drinks from downstairs (cain and grain) to upstairs which was fine so i went back downstairs to take the drinks back when a staff member at the desk at the bottom told me who ever told you that is talking rubbish and then he escorted me back upstairs with the drinks and spoke to someone then everything was fine we was seated and given menus. A male came over he was slim build and had a tash/beard we asked some advice on some of the cocktails he was very impatient gave no advice and he had a really bad attitude and told us the description is in the cocktails, my friend asked for 5mins to decide as he dosnt handle pressure like that. 5mins goes by guy comes back i order us both same cocktails. Cocktails arrive we cheers then the guy who serves us comes back with the bill on the table which we are confused as we didnt ask so i took the bill to him asked him why he got the bill his response was and i quote “im finding you both difficult to serve and quite frankly i do not like the look of you” i was in shock so i asked to see the manager straight away i told her the story she went in the back to talk to him or someone and came back out and said we have to leave as he feels uncomfortable now. Honestly never in my life have i felt so embarrassed and in shock how a premises like this can treat customers. Looking back through the reviews of this place it seems a common pattern of rude staff which is a shame as it seems a cool little place to drink. Let me know when under new management or you hire some staff who have a slight interest in the customers needs il give it another shot until then i highly advise people stay away and i do not recommend, however i do recommend cain and grain."

"Do you like pub food? Do you like Michelin stars? Do you want an amazing meal with little to no pretension? Do you want to go to a pub that's practically in the middle of nowhere? If you answered yes to these four questions, head immediately to The Royal Oak. We had a slight concern when my GPS said we had arrived and it was a completely different pub. Luckily, the right pub was just a bit further up the road. We booked Sunday Lunch, because who doesn't like Sunday Lunch in a pub? If you bring your Ferrari, you can park right in the front as well! The inside is really warm and charming. There are really friendly staff there to welcome you in and let you sit in some comfy chairs and couches and have a drink while you're waiting for your fourth dining companion to arrive. So kudos to that. Our table was in the back in what looked like was an add-on. But one whole wall is full of windows overlooking a beautiful garden, so you don't really feel like you're shoved way in the back corner. The service was a bit slow, but if you're not in a rush, why does it matter? We ordered the baked Vacherin Mont d'or cheese (which in the winter, I will be doing at home instead of baked brie or Camembert) and a couple of Scotch Eggs and Rabbit on toast as pre-nibbles. The eggs and rabbit were nice, but not amazing, but the cheese dip was great. And the bread basket they served was awesome as well. Several types of bread with butter. The olive flatbreads were awesome, and since two diners didn't like olives, two of us got to eat a lot of them. They'll bring as much bread as you ask, but it's super easy to go overboard. For my starter I opted for something different than everyone else and got the game terrine. What a mistake that was. Not that the terrine wasn't delicious. It was, but the rabbit lasagne was like heaven in your mouth. I was super jealous of everyone else. For my main I ordered the hare and trotter pie. The crust wasn't the most amazing, but the filling was probably the best pie filling I've ever had. The hare and trotter were soft and luscious and the gravy was phenomenal. It was really rich so toward the end I had to cut the richness with the delicious mash they served with it. The other half had the woodcock and I tried a few bites of that as well. Awesome. Simply awesome. His only complaint was that it was huge and very rich so it was hard to finish it all, and he didn't want dessert at the end of the meal. For dessert, two of us ordered the chocolate fondant and one the butterscotch pudding. I loved the fondant, but again it was really good sized and incredibly rich. It was a lot after the rich pie. And the filling was almost too oozy. At least it wasn't over done. We also ordered some Madeleines and our coffees and teas came with Petits Fours. The Madeleines were kind of boring for me, they needed more flavor, but the Petits Fours (a raisin cake, coconut marshmallow and a chocolate truffle) were great. The coffee not so much. I hate ordering filter coffee and just getting a long pull espresso. They are not the same. But the bad parts were really minor. The good parts far outshown and some of the dishes we had were some of the best dishes of the weekend. The woodcock was fantastic and I'm still having dreams about my pie. I need to figure out how to make something that good at home. With a better pie crust. It's unfortunate that it's not really conveniently close, because I could see myself ending up here quite a bit. Since I was driving, I couldn't drink either, but given my state the night before, it was probably a good thing. If you're in the area and fancy an amazingly laid back atmosphere with awesome food, book this place!"

"Awful meal tonight at The Acorn. Starter came out in five minutes, so when forty five minutes later there was no sign of the main meal, it was clear that something was up, so a member of staff had to be approached. When it did eventually appear, the steak ordered as a medium rare was very much on the side of rare (oozing with blood), and the 'sizzling ' aspect of the course seemed to have given the chef the impression that he didn 't need to cook the mushrooms and tomatoes, so therefore the hot plate would do the work for them. Onion rings were limp, lifeless, and had clearly seen the fryer for only the briefest periods. Onions themselves were charcoal. Chicken stack wasn 't much better, with the meat overcooked and the 'crispy buttermilk ' coating taking its name to the most extreme level and falling off upon touch. Chips were fine. I paid for the meal, I don 't believe in not doing so, as wages need to be paid and costs have to be managed. It would though have been nice to have the opportunity to share my opinion with a member of staff. Pub or not, a brief visit from one of the team during the meal is always a nice touch. Upon paying, the staff member behind the bar seemed more preoccupied with discussing cocktails with her visiting friend than 1) asking if my meal was nice, 2) giving me eye contact, and 3) engaging in even the most cursory element of customer service. Not great."

"I had been in this pub for a while, but my family and I were on the way from cheltenham to Westonbirt at 17 o'clock and called for an early dinner. all four of us said that the meal was faultless, we enjoyed all three courses and cannot praise this place enough. such a great atmosphere, cordial greeting from the incredibly fabulous staff and a seat directly at the log tariff. what more can they demand. it is easy to find, beautiful location and has plenty of parking right next to the pub. in summer there is a large garden back. in februar this is the place to eat when they go to visit the colesbourne snowdrop gardens that are right in front of the house and not to miss. the menu at the colesbourne inn is huge and offers for everyone something wonderful, regardless of their taste or nutrition to choose. my calamari ‘Bar Bite’ size starter was superb and definitiw a greater part than we expected. the other appetizers, a black bell and black pudding with fried egg was superb as well as the bread selection we also ordered. mostly fish Pie....only full of a lot of different fish and whistle fish. my son had the steak and ale pier he claimed he was the best he had eaten in a very long time. two of us had the nut roast dinner.... I want my Christmas dinner to be as good as that. desserts of fruit crumbs and custard finished the meal with the obligatory glass or two of fizz. for each device in these times to offer this incredible selection of oriented, which is an absolute credit for them by the most kind of employees ever and the very high standards they did. highly recommended at any level possible. well made the colesbourne inn"
