"I attended an afternoon tea at the Abbey with some of my family, and a combination of 4 children. (2 with disabilities . Upon arrival, we were directed to an empty bar area, only to look round for a member of staff to book in. After a good long 5 minutes or so we were greeted by a lady who tried to find our booking, But was looking at the wrong piece of paper. We waited again for her to find the right paper for the day and show us to our table. The table arrangement itself was beautiful. But there was no ambience or any music in the back ground. It was extremely quiet. Felt like the children couldn't speak loudly. The lady that seated us, came back for our drinks order and was immediately confused when asked her to bring 3 milkshakes and 1 squash (drinks part of our afternoon tea she asked numerous times what we wanted. This was slightly frustrating to say the least. Next we had our order arrive, with a pot of tea, but had to wait 50 minutes before we got any milk to go with it! This meant the tea was already cold and had to order a second pot. When the afternoon tea had arrived, it wasn't even our order! A poor family of a mum and 3 children were looking at us as they had arrived well before we did and it was obvious that the afternoon tea was theirs!! I helped the waitress take there tea over to them and I apologised. Finally, when the children's afternoon tea came, there were 4 fingers of bread,a couple of cakes and 2 scones. This was supposed to go between 4 children.....at £11 each child. £44 for this was not acceptable. I spoke to a lady in charge and said this is not what I ordered when I booked and the staff argued with me that this is what you get! So this would work out at 1 jam finger sandwich, 1 ham finger sandwich, 1 jam tart, a babybel and a half a scone for each child. £44. Jokers. Not on. I again complained and spoke to a duty manager. Again, being argued with is not fun in front of your family! She asked me what I needed to put this right! I said another children's afternoon tea would be great, she went off to do this! (Being the ever friendly manager, She Said we didn't have to pay for this extra children's tea Ha! So already we had waited over an hour to be served a very expensive piece of cake. I also ordered a gluten free afternoon tea between 2 adults. 3 finger sandwiches came out. How do you share 3 finger sandwiches between 2 people? And a mince pie from Sainsbury's cut in half. By this point I couldn't be bothered to ask anyone where the food was for the price I was paying!! Ridiculous! As for the children. They were very hungry and the 2 disabled children who had to wait so long were very upset when we left. It was a very traumatic experience. As we left, it was obvious that the staff were unhappy about having to help us there was 3 families in the area for afternoon tea so wasn't busy at all. The duty manager could have at least apologised instead of arguing with me . It's not my fault that whomever booked us in and advised us of how much food we'd need is clearly in need of more training. If you want a decent afternoon tea for your money, go elsewhere. It was a complete rip off and not so much as a treat at all, more like how much??? Where's the food?!! Didn't realise making jam sandwiches were so expensive! Feel really let down by the Abbey. Won't be booking again and will make sure everyone knows to keep their money! Utter shambles."

"I booked a table having read in reviews about Rochester restaurants that it's wise to do so. The three of us went on a Friday evening. The place did get pretty crowded so I was glad I'd booked. The restaurant is nice inside, didn't notice any smells as another recent reviewer said. I liked the mural on the wall. All the waiting staff were friendly. The manager even offered to take a couple of photos for us. The atmosphere was convivial. The manager asked everyone to join in when he brought out a birthday cake and the whole restaurant sang Happy Birthday. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind as we were chatting and could see the restaurant was busy. And we did appreciate not being chivvied along to finish. We shared an appetiser of Garlic Bread pizza dough which was nice. Our first courses were delicious. My friends had Salmone ai Porcini. They especially liked that the salmon wasn't swamped in sauce. I had a special homemade ravioli with mushroom and sausage. Our first courses were so good we were really looking forward to our desserts. One friend had Banoffi Pie which was served in a glass dish. My sister and I had cheesecake with a fruit coulis. Sadly, we were all a little disappointed with the desserts. They were okay but we were expecting something outstanding after the first course. While chatting to the waitress, we discovered that they normally have 2 sittings, 6:30 and 8:30. However, due to one of the chefs having just had an operation, they were only doing one sitting. So, that explained the relaxed attitude. I'd definitely be happy to go back there again. I think another time, I'd have a starter rather than a dessert. And definitely remember to book a table!"

"We used to go to the Green Man a lot under the previous owners and thought we would give it a try again for our wedding anniversary with our children. Bit of a mistake! You can see they are trying to improve the quality of the food, which was always good anyway but poor training and terrible service really let it down tonight. So we sat at 17:30 and it was 15 mins before we were offered drinks, not a massive deal. Food order another 10 mins. Both the kids ordered burgers so I specifically asked if there was mayonnaise in the burgers and if the coleslaw was separate and was told no mayo in burger and coleslaw separate. Starter sharing mezze was OK except only 2 bits of halloumi (for 4 people) and odd tasting sandy brown coloured olives. So the burgers turn up and have coleslaw chucked on the plate right on the burgers and mayo in the buns. So they went back and “replacements” came back from the kitchen very quickly which were the same burgers just in new buns with no mayo and the coleslaw in ramekins. Then the wife’s fish and chips. Looked nice and waited for service to offer condiments however seems we are being left alone now we said about the burgers. So she starts tucking in and finds a short dark black human hair on the plate. So that gets sent back. To be fair to the chef came out and apologised that he had not put his bandana on and unfortunately one of his hairs had fallen on the plate. OK forgive that once and say thank you for apologising. However it’s the same but if fish (as the wife had picked a bit off the end) and probably the same chips. Lovely. Then we totally get left alone. The kids were enjoying the burgers but slightly over salted and the water had run out so we thought get more water so they can finish and that someone would come near, which they did but to serve the tables around us and completely ignore us, even when trying to get attention. So in the end we get up (and could totally have walked out without paying and none of the staff would have been any the wiser) that’s not us though, so we paid. Told the chap at the bar that we had to come to the bar as we had been totally ignored (him being one of the many staff fawning over the people on the tables around us) and he just said OK handed the receipt. Now was the time for an apology, maybe even some sort of discount (which most places just do regardless) but no, nothing, no apology, no discount. Not bothered about the money So I paid in full and will be extremely unlikely to (read will never) set foot in the place again as there was no attempt at apology. Happy wedding anniversary! When you book there is a question “is it a special occasion” which we put yes it was our wedding anniversary and no acknowledgment so they obviously ignore those bits on the bookings. It felt like it was very clicky, like if you are known or are loaded you get looked after. Not a place for mere mortals."
