"Additionally, there were several pieces of broken furniture: a drawer front was hanging off, there was a battered trunk in the bathroom, and a bathroom mirror was waiting to be mounted. Access to the side entrance via a cobbled alley is essential, particularly when the front door is locked, as it prevents the hassle of dragging luggage through the bar. The interior has various levels and steps that add character, but unfortunately, it makes the space inaccessible for wheelchairs. The bar area is appealing, featuring Theakston Old Peculier Best, Black Sheep Best, and Nick Stafford's Hambleton Ales Stud on tap, along with John Smith's, pickled eggs, onions, and the standard lagers. During my visit, the local football team was celebrating a victory with their trophy, initially in high spirits. However, a brief fight broke out in the bar, causing some patrons to seek refuge in the dining area. Thankfully, it ended quickly without any significant damage, likely involving some over-enthusiastic footballers, so this shouldn’t be considered a regular occurrence. I found the chicken liver starter acceptable, though the sauce was too watery and would have benefited from some bread for dipping. Dirty wine glasses are simply unacceptable, especially in dim lighting. My glass had noticeable smudges from someone else's lips, which is not appealing. Next to me, the owner engaged in a long-winded conversation about roadworks, which detracted from the focus on cleanliness and hygiene. The lamb casserole was delicious, albeit a touch sweet, but was undermined by the stingy portion of bread served. I was given just *one* small part-baked French roll, not nearly enough to accompany the dish. It felt ridiculous for such a meal. Noise from the bar carried into the dining room, as soundproofing clearly wasn't a priority during construction — having a few drinks might help drown it out. In the morning, we were greeted by the pleasant sounds of horses being exercised nearby. The bathroom supplies were a bit odd, offering four shower caps but no soap. Breakfast was satisfactory but unremarkable. Overall, while this review may sound critical, my experience wasn’t bad at all. It was good value, but with minimal effort, it could be significantly improved."

"We settled in and decided to explore the hotel and its grounds. The spa was impressive and featured one of the best outdoor pools we’ve ever enjoyed. Dinner on Sunday evening was good, although my husband’s steak would have benefited from some vegetables—that's just a personal preference. We returned to our room around 8:30 PM and soon discovered we wouldn't be able to stay inside for long. The wedding disco was in full swing, and with our room located directly above the hall, the noise was unbearable. It became so loud that the furniture vibrated like something out of a scene from Jurassic Park. We couldn’t hear the television or each other. My husband went to the reception to inquire about when the wedding festivities might end, and it seemed like they would go on until midnight. They offered us a room change, which we accepted, but unfortunately, the new room wasn’t of the same quality; at least it was quieter. Breakfast was enjoyable on both mornings, but dinner on the second night left something to be desired. We ordered the smashed burger, which was served on a warped metal tray that spun around while we tried to cut our food; I had to prop it up with my smartphone to keep it steady. The blue checkered paper underneath the food fell apart while cutting, so we had to be careful not to accidentally eat it. I would suggest that in the future, if a wedding is occurring, the hotel should allocate the guests staying there rooms that are further away from the venue. We noticed a lot of guests checking in after the wedding speeches, and it would make for a much quieter experience for those looking for a peaceful stay. It was evident that we weren’t the only ones who found the noise level unacceptable, as others also expressed their concerns. We had booked the hotel after having to swap a Virgin hot air balloon experience that never materialized after two years of waiting. We did appreciate receiving a complimentary bottle of prosecco upon arrival, while some other guests had to ask for theirs, so that was a nice touch. Overall, we enjoyed our time in the area and would recommend the spa, but we likely won't return anytime soon."
