"On our first night in Edinburgh we decided to try 21212. The service was outstanding, but unfortunately most of the meal left us underwhelmed. We were greeted by two very friendly and hospitable hostesses, and the service throughout the night was equally friendly and hospitable. There seemed to be some confusion over where we were to be seated, but it was cleared up quickly and we were seated at a table in the dining room. The dining room is well appointed, and the tables are not too crowded. However, if you are shy about having the table next to yours being able to hear your conversation, this might not be the place for you, as the setting is very intimate, and several tables share a common bench as one side of the seating. The dinner menu was straightforward, and we were informed that the menu changes weekly, which impressed us both. The wine list was good, and, although I wouldn 't describe it as extensive, they offered a variety of bottles, as well as a pairing for each course. The sommelier however did not offer any suggestions to us, which was a bit surprising, considering this is advertised as a haven for wine lovers on the restaurants website. I would have expected the sommelier to approach us and offer a suggestion, or, at the very least, speak to us, but he did neither. The amuse bouche was creative, but the texture was not appealing. For our first courses, my husband and I each tried a different dish, but neither of us were impressed. The textures for both dishes were off (both dishes included a foam type element that was very sour, and one dish included raw onion, which wrecked our palates). Our second course, a spring vegetable soup, was also not what we hoped for. My husband described the soup course as very foamy and acidic. For the third course, we both opted for the steak dish. My husband 's was modified to exclude shellfish, but the portion size was equal to mine. Although we were not given any option as to how our steak was cooked, it was tasty. The fourth course was a delicious cheese plate, but we commented that the cheese itself was probably not made in the restaurant, so we weren 't really eating the chef 's creation. The fact that we were most impressed with the cheese plate was unfortunate, considering it most likely wasn 't the chef 's creation, and we believe the price of the meal warranted more in terms of flavor. Dessert, the fifth course, was tasty, but didn 't blow us away. For a restaurant with a Michelin star, we expected more. All in all, the service was excellent, and we enjoyed our third, fourth and fifth courses. The first two courses though were not at all what we expected, and we were disappointed. We would not go back, but we would not discourage others from trying the restaurant. It is advertised as being unique, and that is certainly what you get."

"This was probably the worst Sunday lunch experience ever. I went here with my son and grandson and probably waited 10 minutes to just find out if they had a table for us. That should have been a warning sign as it didn 't look very busy. We were then shown upstairs by a friendly waitress to our table, we then waited another 15 minutes before she came to ask if we wanted drinks, we told her we also wanted to order food at the same time as we had a 2 year old with us. There were 2 other tables with people at them. The drinks arrived and then a while later the food arrived. I couldn 't quite believe what was put in front of me, it was nothing more than a pasta bowl with some obviously frozen veg that looked terribly soggy, this had strangely been arranged around 3 miniscule Yorkshire puddings that were the size of table spoon, on these were bits of potato that were hardly recognisable as roast potatoes and my son said perhaps they bring the potatoes separately I pointed out that the potatoes were already on the plate. The beef looked overcooked and was completely stone cold. The child 's roast for my grandson at £10 was so dreadful that we couldn 't even cut through the chicken as it was so tough. The plates were cold and so was all the food, even if the food had been hot it looked so disgusting I wouldn 't have wanted to eat it. As gravy had come in individual pots, i dipped my finger in to see if that was even hot and it was only tepid, it tasted so strange and nothing like gravy. As my son continued to try cutting his child 's meat, I told him I couldn 't possibly eat this as it was inedible to which he then agreed. The people on the next table overheard us and said theirs was also disgusting with frozen broccoli almost a puree. I 've had better food in hospital and school dinners. I can 't imagine who was in the kitchen but it certainly couldn 't have been a chef. Whoever has provided positive reviews recently can only be friends of the people running this pub now as nobody in their right mind could find anything positive about the food, it truly was disgusting. We told the waitress we were leaving as the food was cold and disgusting, she asked us to pay for the drinks that we hadn 't drunk, we had ordered wine to drink with our meal. It really was a terrible experience. The couple who ran this before the last people were great, the food was exceptional and so was the service, my son said she was French. We will not be stepping foot in The Sussex Brewery again. £17 for a roast that even the dog would have turned his nose up at. A real shame as my son lives just round the corner."

"Booked a table in advance, as I was planning to visit on a Sunday morning. Arrived at my booked time, no greeting from any of the numerous staff members. Waited until I was approached by a grey haired waitress who would be more at home on a parade ground it would seem. She seemed to think the best way to approach a customer was to bark “name?” at me before bothering to ask if I’d made a booking or not. She then casually wandered off, returning a few minutes later to ask my name again. Was shown a table, given a menu and within literally 2.5 mins of me sitting down, she was over asking for my order. I had to politely say that I wasn’t sure yet and could I have a few more minutes; she seemed to think it was ok to sigh and wander off again. Very odd behaviour indeed. I heard her berating another table of two for their audacity to assume they didn’t have to book, and how she’d need the table back in 45 mins or less. I ordered the small breakfast, and it was mediocre at best. Poached egg was hard all the way through, one measly veggie sausage which was tasteless and some veggie haggis that was bland and cold. Really not worth the price tag. I’ve no idea how this place is still in business. The extremely rude woman who is front of house seems to have a reputation for being awful, as read in other reviews. And the food is nothing to write about. Sadly I won’t be back, nor would I recommend Heaven Scent to anyone I like!"
