"The restaurant is an old traditional dining room with its original wooden booths with glass surrounds and high backed banquettes, and is obviously popular with the locals. We started off badly when we asked for tap water with the meal and were told that they...didn't serve tap water because 'people don't like the taste'. Most restaurants in Europe and the US have got over that little scam and happily serve tap water if you ask for it, and it is for us to decide if we like the taste or not. Our bill for bottled water alone came to be warned! The food was good modern European cooking, but the service cheerfully chaotic. We got another table's drinks and then later their soup course as well. The first few dishes were dumped on the table unexplained until we asked what they were, but things then settled down and went well after that. We chose the set menu with matched wines. A first course of sweetbreads with young wheat ears, a savoury sorbet, excellent fish and then pudding. The wines were mostly well chosen and interesting but the schooner of amontllado sherry with the delicate pudding of apple soup with condensed milk ice cream and shavings of lettuce stalk was disasterously overpowering and just plain wrong. The courses arrived at a pleasingly slow pace but each small glass of wine arrived about minutes before each course so we had to really discipline ourselves not to finish the wine before the food arrived. The total amount of wine was not very generous and although it was enough for the women in the party, most of the men found it rather mean and commented that we would have done better to spend the per head charged for the wine on a couple of bottles off the wine carte. All in all we enjoyed the food but they are going to have to work very hard at their frontofhouse presentation before they are considered for their Michelin star"

I add my compliments to those already here. A very creative and delicious menu, charming service and beautiful historic restaurant. Take a chance and try the surprise early bird p.m. menu

This was our best dining experience in Weimar. Although the staff were a little stretched, the food was just gorgeous. All about the food. I believe this rates right up there with Gourmetrestaurant Anna Amelia and at a much more reasonable price

We took the Gourmet menu with wines to match. Its like courses long and a very tasteful experience with many subtleties. Friendly and swift service as well. The wines matched the menu perfectly and in contrast to many other restaurants of the same caliber,...the amount of wine they serve is actually consumable before the next course is served. It keeps the price down as well

This place is special. Right from the first course of our set menu Euros to the dessert we were impressed by the use of local and seasonal ingredients either imaginative use of common products, such as the beetroot soup, or the introduction of...vegetables and products we are not familiar with. It is light cuisine up until the meat course, at which point it becomes a proper feast; I like that approach, because the chef can show hisher skill over a series of dishes and then feed you. Excellent wine list, and some of the local wines are well worth trying Traminer from Gussek was well made indeed. Service with a smile too, although how she can cope on her own if it is more than half full I have...

Have I ever eaten in one place three times in a row meaning Friday, Saturday and Sunday during one journey? Not until I discovered Sten Fischer's heaven for foodies in Weimar, Germany. Yes, I love Michelin star restaurants and the cuisine and service they provide,...but I am not always in the mood for the usually rather stiff environment nor able to afford the price tag such a dining involves. Sten Fischer's AltWeimar made us instantly feel at home and I sure wish I could have stayed longer and tried more of his wonderful, innovative yet light creations. We loved the various fish specialities, the veal in bread crust was delightful and the new vegetarian menu showed that meatless cuisine is...

Alt Weimar was our biggest dispointment in Weimar. They try very hard to be a top gastronomic restaurant but in the end they just fail to deliver. Just to give a few examples: the accompanying wines of the menu were limited to a half glass...per dish. What's even worse: they were given to us without any further insights on the wine provided. The bottles weren't shown and the wine glass was presented with an explanation like: 'this is a wine from Austria...' we're not kidding. To us all wines tasted of the same poor quality. To make things even worse: our dessert came half melted away and was presented with the words: 'das dessert ist eingesturtzt' once again we're not kidding. On the positiv...
