"We arrived a few minutes before our booking time, staff very busy and told to find our table in the restaurant area. No sooner had we sat down when a young chap came up and asked if we would like to order drinks. Efficient and accommodating. We ordered our food four mains, after a while the meals arrived all seemed good, however one of the party had ordered the ‘Chefs Pie of the Day’. It arrived sitting on a bed of mash with veg and a moat of very weak runny gravy. The pie casing was very soft and soggy as if it had been microwaved! Not a crispy pastry one would’ve expected. The amount of gravy on the plate created a challenge as it splashed over and onto one of our party. Taste of the pie was disappointing as you couldn’t tell if it was Mutton as described or otherwise. Apart from this the other members meals were of a high standard and enjoyed. As this was a special birthday get together one poor meal out of four reflects the score given. If everything had been to the same high standard of three of the meals and desserts then the score may have been different."

Amazing food, service and ambience. The staff are lovely, the food is very high standard, eaten at lunch and in the evening, both are very good.

Went there 3 weeks ago food was fantastic .. sadly went back tonight , wow what a big disappointment with the new menu .. I'd not eat there again untill the menu changes or bring back sausage and mash and pork belly or at least put chicken on your menu .. but I'd drink there still .. and why no decent ploughman's xx but is a lovely pub View menu

From the moment we arrived we were all made to feel really welcome. The staff from start to finish were friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was prompt and efficient. The pub itself is so pretty and spotlessly clean. This was our first visit here but it definitely won’t be our last. I’d happily recommend this little gem to anyone.

Love this place, bit sadly disappointed today. Went to celebrate a 77th birthday, I chose beef curry, the curry sauce was very good, but the steak on top was mostly inedible, very tough. The sea bass was very good, but very small. We shared a very good cheeseboard. When the bill came we queried why half a pint of beer was £3.10 and a pint was £5.80, we were told it was because because of the extra washing up, waiting staff were very good but the lady in charge was rather rude, have always enjoyed this place but will think twice before going back

Went for a birthday meal for one of our party members. The food was very hit and miss. Some meals were lovely like the pie, it was steak and ale when we went which was lovely. The dessert we had was amazing! However the burger was a complete waste of money. It was dry as there was literally just meat and bread. The pulled pork was just that with no sauce. I had to add a lot of mayonnaise to eat it. It needed some Lettuce, tomato and some sort of sauce. The only thing I enjoyed about my meal was the apple slow, which is sad as it was quite an expensive burger.

I visited the restaurant today, June 4th, with my black and white Border Collie after a 5-mile walk. I was pleased to discover that the restaurant was very dog-friendly. We sat in a lovely bar area with comfortable sofas. The service was excellent and I enjoyed a nice pint of cider. I ordered the rump steak and chips, which was so tender it could have been the finest sirloin. The meal was excellent. Overall, I couldn't fault the experience in any way. The restaurant earned 5 stars for its dog-friendliness, atmosphere, food, drink, and staff. It was also good value. Many thanks, we will definitely be back. Clive and Molly.

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
