"We've visited Chez Paul since it first opened - must be well over 10 years by now - and at the start it was truly what Angouleme needed. A vibrant, buzzy place, always full and with a fabulous terrace. Goodness knows what has happened in recent years - perhaps Paul himself has retired or left for pastures new? Who knows - anyway, the food has gone downhill drastically. Instead of a traditional menu, there is now a very bizarre leather ring-binder affair with photos of quite odd food. That's the only way to describe it. Odd. What's going on? Fortunately, Angouleme generally has upped its game and there are several decent places to eat now - but to be honest, the terrace is still a big draw! We now go for an apero and one course rather than the whole meal, just for a bit of ambience which is generally lacking in some of the other recommended restaurants."

Recommended by our Chambre d'Hote. Deceptively large restaurant with a garden. Good food, excellent service. Very lively.

Get your self a seat out in the courtyard, Lots of shade and a great french food to be had. Mix of classic French food and modern European burgers etc.... Well cooked well and come out fresh and quick. Service was great and dog welcome in the court yard if good :) Great afternoon

Restaurant has different styles of decor inside all very well done, we ate out in the garden through the back which was great. We stuck to their 'le weekend' menu which had a great choice and all staff very attentive. Food was excellent. Handy interactive menu at front of restaurant with language converter. View menu

On a hot summer evening the garden was a beautiful place to dine. The menu was varied and cost very reasonable. The portions were quite large, so one course was quite sufficient for us. The staff were pleasant and attentive throughout, even when it got very busy towards the end of our meal. I would definitely return if ever in that area again.

Welcome was poor, service unconnected and disinterested. Went there years ago and fancied going back. But it had changed a lot and what I could not forgive is a menu with pictures!!!. Having said that, the food was adequate but uninspiring and we were surrounded by beautiful restaurants that all looked great. Cut the meal short just to escape to one of the other local places. It's a pretty setting but just not worth it in my opinion. Loads of better places nearby. The lack of friendliness and complete indifference was what killed it. Had to ask for bread, water and the coffee as forgotten. Salad and no frites was missed too. Need to get their act together. Won't go back. To many other options l...

"I had not intended eating out as I had had a decent and large picnic. It was the weekend of the Circuit des Remparts so every where was packed. The 'Bistroc' was equally busy but I saw rognons de veau on the menu ('Carte') so I asked if they could serve me. They said there would be a long delay but I could sit at the bar and have a drink if I didn't mind waiting. As I had time on my hands I was quite content to sit with a beer reading a book. Eventually after half an hour i was approached by one of the two (I presume ) owners and asked if I had ordered. I said not and he proclaimed himself 'desolee' taking my order. 10 or 15 minutes later I was presented with a magnificent steak - I think a cote de beouf - which I would have readily tucked into. Sadly not what I had ordered. More apologies and eventually the rognons de veau arrived. Nicely cooked, no sauce but good 'frites' and salad. I completed the meal with cafe gourmand, not spectacular but perfectly acceptable. When the bill arived they did not charge me for either my beer or the wine with my meal - quite unnecessary but hey insisted. This place is an old fashioned grill with great atmosphere - aided or hindered by two children of one or both of the patron(ne)s who raced around the place chasing each other and flirting with custommers. High quality food unpretentiously cooked. although I concede not cheap.Despite being rushed off their feet the two front of house staff I assume, the owners made every possible effort to make the cusommmers welcome.A very enjoyable evening."
