"We stayed overnight and our package included a 5 course tasting menu. It was a very unimaginative menu, no accompanying wine flight and with the exception of one very good waitress, the rest of the staff were inexperienced children. The starters of carrot soup and tiger prawns were tasteless. The second course of parma ham was served with jarred pickled onions. Then came what was supposed to be sorbet. In my view that's not a course, it's a palate cleanser. And more disturbingly it clearly had dairy in it and was actually ice cream! Then came the main course. The broccoli and mash were fine but the duck was hideously overcooked, to the point that it was impossible to cut without a steak knife. The pudding of sticky toffee pudding was like a school dinner a massive slab of dry, over microwaved sponge. If this tasting menu was designed to showcase the chefs' best dishes, he should seriously consider a change of career. The portions were huge and it was basically 3 courses, with a weird little cup of soup at the start and a scoop of bad ice cream between starter and main. With such poor cooking, it's no surprise that on a Saturday night in the height of summer, there were only 10 diners in total in the restaurant. The highlight was the bread and butter. Enough said."

The menu offered for both dinner and breakfast had a great variety of options to suit all tastes. The chef himself is very friendly, welcoming, and creative with his presentation.

The food and service at this restaurant were excellent. We tried the cod dish and it was delicious. The menu also offers good options for non-meat eaters. Our food was served promptly.

We enjoyed a dinner to celebrate a birthday and had the pleasure of being looked after by Lewis and our waitress Kiri. We were made to feel welcomed and it was obvious that both members of staff were genuinely polite, friendly and helpful. Credit must go to the kitchen team who provided our meals that were of a very high standard of quality, quantity and presentation. We look forward to a return visit soon and thank you for a very enjoyable visit.

Five of us were royally treated from arrival until departure enjoying perfect personal and friendly service from Karen and excellent food whether it was the scallops, mussels, best ever beef tartare, for starters followed by the finest beef fillet in the Wellington, superb venison or the tender rib eye on the bone as mains presented in the most perfect manner a personal visit from the chef at the end of our meal could be considered the icing on the proverbial birthday cake ! Well done Culpeper 's.

Sunday lunch today….great service. Interesting to talk to a staff member who was very pleasant and knowledgable about the group ethics and hotels…..sorry I didn’t get your name. Starter was chosen but were offered an alternative which was absolutely great. Smoked salmon and caviar was a lovely starter. Roast beef was well done for hubby….and as it comes for me…lovely but knife didn’t cut it! Dessert was cheesecake and fruit for me….topped with meringue ….gave meringue to hubby. He had chocolate mousse …looked lovely. Coffee and petit fours for him. House champagne was chilled. Thank you for your attention to detail.

Despite the limited choices, we found a couple of items to order. The crab starter was tasty but the portion size was lacking. The slow cooked pork cheeks we ordered were flavorful and tender, but the accompaniments of sweet potato puree, baby leeks, and caramelized gala apples were disappointingly sparse and should have been listed as garnishes. We also discovered that some items on the bill were priced higher than what was advertised on both the meal menu and wine menu. After bringing these discrepancies to the attention of the staff, the bill was corrected. While the staff were courteous and accommodating, the overall experience left much to be desired. It was clear why we were the only...

"I feel a bit bad about writing this, but for the first time ever there 's only 1 star and probably the longest comments I 've left. We arrived around 12:15 on a September Thursday after having a walk hungry, we fancied a pub lunch. Staff were pleasant if a bit rushed the young lady behind the bar was on her own and doing the best she could. Several things were off the menu, but we ordered a Curry of the day (Thai Green on this occasion) and sausage mash with gravy. Difficult things to screw up... After a reasonable wait, two small dishes appeared. The Thai Curry was tiny, containing a few small bits of grilled chicken in a fairly anaemic sauce, with a small amount of plain white rice on the side; the two sausages were quite small and on a small bed of mash surrounded by gravy. Both dishes were stone cold. We sent them back. Frankly, if we hadn 't paid in advance, I 'd have left at that point. A few minutes later they re appeared, along with a small dish of sweet chilli sauce and 3 small prawn crackers, two of which were not properly cooked (still solid in parts, i.e. not cooked hot or long enough). The sausages were now hot, the mash lukewarm and the gravy cloying and still pretty cold. Being fair, the very small sausages were quite tasty, but the mash was under/not seasoned and the gravy had little flavour, no onion or anything even vaguely interesting, and was still cold. The curry was a disgrace. The rice was flaccid and tasteless, the curry had almost no flavour and the chicken was watery, and pretty grim (tasteless too). Tiny portion as well. We left the curry. I did eat the sausage mash as I was really hungry, but in retrospect wished I hadn 't. I almost never leave food anywhere in the world, but I left that curry. I 'm not sure how dishes that bad could be let out of any kitchen. We complained to the waitress (who was doing her best) she asked us not to leave and a minute or two later refunded our main courses with an apology. I felt for her as she was doing her best as front of house when the kitchen was a shocker. Note that we didn 't ask for a refund or even hint, they just provided it. I 've never asked for a refund. It 's sad, as these days rural pubs need to do things right, but this wasn 't just small things; everything they could have done wrong with those two dishes they did wrong. Nothing cooked from fresh, nothing checked before leaving the kitchen, tasteless food, tiny portions, cold."
