"I made a reservation for Mother's Day at this restaurant for a 3-course set menu for three people. We have visited this restaurant twice before and the food was excellent on those occasions. However, we were disappointed with our experience yesterday. The kitchen restaurant itself was very cold and we waited for a while to be served. As we predicted, we were given a table near the door, which made us request to move tables for the second time due to the freezing temperature. Many diners were even eating with their coats on. It seemed that a couple of large groups of tourists arrived at the same time as us, causing the restaurant to quickly fill up. There seemed to be too few staff members for the number of customers, although they were all very pleasant but clearly overwhelmed. We had made the reservation several weeks in advance for a lunchtime slot at 1:30, but not all menu choices were available. The lentil broth was bland and unappetizing, possibly the worst we have ever had. Despite this, we were so cold that we ate it for warmth. My mum ordered a prawn salad, which had nice prawns but a minimal amount of dressing. For the second course, we had roast beef dinner which was tasty with a good gravy, but the beef was overcooked and tough, as were the Yorkshire puddings. The vegetables lacked flavor as well. The highlight of the meal was the dessert. Unfortunately, the log burner went off halfway through and the staff did not have time to refill it, causing the room to become colder. The restaurant has a beautiful setting and the drive up to the castle is lovely, particularly in summer. However, we will not be returning for a meal anytime soon."

The restaurant is beautifully decorated with family portraits hung on the walls, adding a warm and personal touch to the ambiance. Guests can enjoy a variety of drinks and delicious food options during their visit.

Well cooked and plentiful food with fresh veg to satisfy wet and hungry archaeologists on a study tour. We had a private area and the service was excellent ; thank you Margaret ! We had preordered but the service was excellent without being rushed .

Since we had toured the castle before we decided to have tea and scones while we waited for the rest of our extended family. If you have never tasted scones these are the best ever. We did not feel rushed and the service was great and everything was clean and organized.

The menu at this restaurant offers a wide variety of options for vegetarians, which was a pleasant surprise. Everything we ordered tasted delicious and the service was quick, despite the busy crowd. It's great to have a cafe that serves good food so you don't have to search for a place to eat. Excellent job, keep up the good work!

We arrived mid afternoon and decided to go to the restaurant first as it would soon close. The restaurant was clean and the staff friendly and welcoming. There was a good selection of hot and cold food we chose to have quiche and salad followed by a clotted cream scone. The food was delicious and the atmosphere pleasant and unhurried, despite being almost closing time.

I’d give this place a 1 star if it was not for the fact that the coffee and scone were good. However the attitude of the young man, short dark hair and glasses, to a foreign person was shameful. I think the person was German. He was doing his best to order food and drink. But the man behind the counter gave him no time, muttered and mumbled, and basically did nothing to help this person out in understanding what was being said. A shocking reflection in how we, in this country, can sometimes treat our visitors. I did try to chat cleanly to the visitor myself, hoping that this might help. In other words interpret the staff members mumbles.

Pastry parcel of venison, black pepper and cranberry, served with a jug of thyme gravy. I am all for trying something different wherever we go. This ticked that box. I normally sidestep something with so much pastry, but this was different. On reflection I would sidestep it next time because of the pastry. But then it must be said the jug of gravy went a long way to redeeming it. Maybe on a return visit the jug could tempt me to a second opinion. Inside the meat was certainly there. No mistaking a significant venison content. For me the pepper overwhelmed my taste buds. Anything else in the Bridie was irrelevant. Cranberry ? I never tasted any, and when pushed by my wife, we opened the last...

The typical Scottish conundrum. I have recently visited a number of good owner run eating places in Scotland. All worth 5*. So what do you do when you find somewhere better ? For me the short answer would be 6 stars. So often, especially north of the Antonine Wall, one tends to find owner run eating places as being 5*. Then you come across somewhere better. Hence the Scottish Conundrum. First we did our typical ‘Buy a guide book’, then go for a coffee to read it before going round the property. It was just as it should be. Ok. A tour of the Castle, then lunch. I am a sucker for something local. So went for the Glamis Birdie. A shortcrust pastry parcel of venison, black paper and cranberry, w...
