"L 'Autruche is an expression of culinary genius by a younger couple who freshly reinvent their menu each night as much to make it more interesting for themselves, we imagine, as to make it more interesting for their patrons. We arrived on an unbearably hot summer evening, late enough (8:30 pm that other small restaurants were turning us away because they didn 't want to bother with another seating, but the proprietress of Autruche told us she 'd have a table for us in half an hour. We wandered the winding streets of this part of Arles for the requisite time, and were seated soon after our return. My bride started dinner with what the restaurant spelled as gaspacho, I a multicolored tomato salad with mozzarella and basil (they did not misrepresent it as a Caprese ; both of us had the 7 hour provençale lamb for our entrée, spread over a bed of rice, and both found it delicious. We asked for, and were served, an excellent and modestly priced vin de la région. Like everyone else that evening, we enjoyed our dinner at a little table on the street on narrow Rue Dulau; they probably could not fit half the customers they had at tables on the street into their small dining area indoors in colder weather. Were we to spend a longer period in Arles, we would surely return many times."

Big little restaurant! The warm welcome of the kitchen and simple but very good the season tartare with precision! An extraordinary sweet peach dessert just as you need. Thank you to the whole team of L'Autruche.

Once again, than beautiful surprises for this meal while regional symbols. What more if it's still a real pleasure to see that a young and beautiful generation of restaurateurs is there to perpetuate the pleasure of the friendly and warm table in the plate.

I was lucky to find this gem of a place whilst in Arles. A small chalkboard menu set down a tiny street off the Rue de la République. The host was incredibly helpful in translating the meals for me. I ordered slow cooked lamb on polenta which was delicious. The sauce was amazing. An absolute umami flavour and the addition of hazelnuts was perfect. I don’t normally order a dessert but the poached nectarine with meringue and yoghurt icecream was sensational. A must go to!

a noon of full heat to rims, a small street isolated from the catchers, that's what attracted us. delicious knives in parsillad and daurade back with small seasonal vegetables, apricots poached with verveine...bref, fresh fish, tasteful accompaniments, finely worked flavors, fresh white wine: the menu at 35 euros is of an excellent value for money. The bosses are smiling, listening, everything we love. small bonus: we were allowed to take a few special table sets to meet the photo! the boss also knows the best addresses in town where to buy good products. I recommend it warmly.

Tuna tartare with apple was clean, fresh and unusual- a revelation- chicken and potatoes with gravy and an intense spicy tomato relish sounds simple but had great depth of flavour. Great bottle of red suggested to us. Tasty Roquefort cheese plate and an absolutely delicious deconstructed apricot tart to finish. Service friendly, informative about the provenance of the food etc and unfussy, which was refreshing after eating in so many places where the attention was quite formal and stuffy. Price reasonable for the quality of the food- 136 euros for 2 including coffee, water and bottle of wine. Highly recommend.

"This restaurant is part of a hotel in a very impressive 16th century building. It looks very classy. However, the night we were there, there must have been some serious problems in the kitchen (or maybe it is always like that . We started with a shared plate of charcuterie which took a long time to arrive – how long does it take to arrange the cold meats on a plate? We then waited a very, very long time for our main courses. While waiting, we saw a dispute at another table involving the maître d’ and resulting in plates going back to the kitchen. We had both ordered duck à l’orange which came with Camargue rice. The rice appeared to have been baked in the oven and was so crisp and dry that it resembled a cereal bar. The ‘orange’ was not the usual sauce, but instead was four cubes of orange that appeared to have been scorched on a grill. They added nothing to the dish. It had been suggested that we should share a side of seasonal vegetables. These turned out to be big chunks of boiled potatoes (with rice! , a boiled root vegetable and a couple of dry artichokes. We had interchanges with two servers and the maître d – all were cold and brusque. We lived in France for more than 20 years and appreciate the fact that the French like to take their time with meals, but there is a big difference between leisurely and glacially slow. Perhaps we were there on a bad night, others seem to have had a better experience."
