"Having a house near Josselin in Brittany, the Portsmouth to St. Malo crossing is the most convenient for us. The MV Bretagne has been on this route for many years and is an old friend. On the outbound overnight crossing we always dine in the Les Abers Restaurant, it's the time when you can relax and enjoy your visit to France. The food and service is invariably of the highest order. It offers both a la carte and table d'hote menus. We usually choose the table d'hote because of the superb buffet choices for starters and desserts. I think it used to be priced at about £24.00 for starter buffet, main course, dessert buffet and cheese. This season, however, there has been a change to the choice of menu. You can now choose the number of courses: either main course + glass of wine at £14.30; the 2 buffets at £17.40; starter buffet + main at £19.50 or all 3 courses at £25.70.We decided to go with the 2 buffets choice, as in the past we've always been too full with all 3!First we had an aperitif, to get us in the mood, of Kir Royale at £2.00 each, excellent! We also selected a bottle of Sancerre to accompany our meal at £19.50, top value for a top wine. There was as usual a good selection of starters, including, crevettes, prawns, smoked salmon, side of salmon, ham, artichoke hearts, tuna stuffed tomatoes, olives, pate, etc. I'm afraid I always make two calls to the starter buffet, starting with a full plate of prawns (well, you need a large plate to accommodate the peelings, excellent, juicy fresh prawns. The main courses on this occasion, although we did not have one, were saddle of lamb with ratatouille (dish of the day); tournedos of beef in pepper sauce; vegetable and sardine tian with black olive tapenade or vegetable stuffed conchigliani (vegetarian option). Then we proceeded to the dessert buffet, again plenty of choice, although for me, there are too many "cakey" choices - plus raspberry flan, raspberry fool, salt caramel cheesecake and creme caramel. We went for the cheesecake and the creme caramel, my favourite, both were delicious. Then to the cheese! Being a French ship there are some great choices, blue, goats, soft, hard all with a choice of crackers and fruits.Overall the food is of a high standard and the service is very good, you are greeted on entry by a maitre d, who shows you to your seat (on quiet crossings you are usually separated from neighbours by at least one setting, though on busy crossings, you will be seated more "cosily". He will introduce to your waiter, who will give you your menus and take any aperitif order you wish, coming back later to take your order as you take your aperitif at leisure. All the staff are bi-lingual, speaking at least French and English and are very attentive. On the whole I would recommend eating at this restaurant on board rather than the self service restaurant, which has equally good food, but doesn't have that relaxing atmosphere, which helps you get into your holiday mood!As a further point the Les Abers offers a breakfast option as you near your destination port. The continental option is priced at £7.50 and again is served as a buffet option, offering a large selection of pastries, meats, cheeses, conserves, grapefruit and fresh fruits. 3 choices of fruit juice, spring water, fresh coffee or tea. As an additional bonus, if you are a regular traveller and a member of Club Voyager, you have this breakfast included in your ferry ticket. All in all - Great Ship, Great Food, Great Service!"

We had the buffet for dinner on the way to France, and for lunch on the way back. The choice of entrees and desserts was varied excellent, the choice of cheese was a bit more limited but still good. As for the main courses, we were blown away. I had the lamb on the way back and it was superb; and they don't skimp on the portion size either. Expensive, but well worth the money.

Having eaten many times at Les Abers and always found it to be excellent, I was a little disappointed this time (in fact the last 2 times we have been were a bit disappointing). The food was fine - nice enough, and presented very well, but was a little bland and just not inspiring. A few years ago, this restaurant used to be one of the highlights of our holiday, but we might not bother next time.

A very popular and busy restaurant with friendly staff and an open kitchen. Selecting the buffet, a selection of help your self starters and desserts - lots of choices - and a served to the table main.Last time I had the spicy lamb which was fantastic, and my friend the duck. This time there was a beef special, so decided to try it. Turned out to be a very generously sized fillet steak. All good, although I preferred the lamb of my last trip.

I was travelling with my daughter, we are both vegetarians but she unfortunately also has to follow a gluten free diet. We were dining from the buffet menu and the staff went out of there way to find out which dishes were suitable for her. The chef made sure that her main course catered for her needs. This all turned what could have been a worrying and stressful experience into a pleasant and relaxed one. The restaurant was very busy but they still found the time needed to help us - thank you.

We walked in and were amazed that the wonderful presentation. But frankly when you actually taste the food its quantity over Quality. The prawns seemed to have been stored for a long long time and the sole was heavily over cooked and the texture of plastic. The deserts were much too sweet and again tasted like industrial production. On the plus side everything looks really great and the setting, looking out straight at the sea is delightful - also the staff are very friendly and helpful but I really can't recommend the food.

The crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo is fairly lengthy - and what better way to pass the time than to eat (and eat well!)?We had been told that there would be a queue outside the restaurant doors, so we made sure we were first in line. The charming reception staff directed us to a table by the window, which was just perfect for watching the harbour slip away in the evening light. We opted for the buffet, which involved a buffet starter, main served at the table and choice of buffet dessert. The choice was plentiful and fresh for the starter, the main (we both had duck) was sublime, pink and juicy, and the selection of desserts so vast and impressive that we could have eaten all of them - we...

I can't understand the gripes. We have a meal here two or three times a year and it's always one of the highlights of our trips to France. The menu Entre Terre et Mer is exceptional value. The choice and quality of the food is excellent. I don't know anywhere other than Brittany Ferries where you can get such a good meal. This is quality dining on a boat that would put, in terms of what you get for your money, most restaurants on land in the shade. Given the wide choice of food available, it is inevitable that some items may not be to everyone's taste. Also, the subtlety of some flavours can be masked if you begin with heavy flavours. For what is on offer, check out Mrs McTonks' excellent revi...

Brittany ferries day time trip from St Malo to Portsmouth. We decided to sit down, relax and have lunch at this a la carte restaurant with the kids. We chose to have the buffet for starter and dessert and then chose a main course to be prepared fresh. The kids could have the same with a half portion of the main course or chicken nuggets etc. The buffet of starters was fantastic with a massive choice from poached salmon, smoked salmon, cooked meats, langoustines, scallops, stuffed tomatoes etc. The kids loved to choose their favourites. Main courses included chicken and asparagus in cream sauce, sea bass and spicy lamb. The kids chose the sea bass and the wild mushroom risotto which to an unt...
