"As a fan of their sister restaurant [Lucca at Manningtree], we were keen to try The Thorn but sadly, it didn't come up to our expectations. The lunch table I'd booked via email on 11 January had since been reserved for other diners and the staff spent a few minutes trying to re-organise another suitable table for us, despite the fact that we arrived at 12noon prompt and only one other couple were already dining. After sitting at our table with a couple of glasses of Prosseco, we ordered a main course only and it took at least 50mins for this to arrive. We both had the Plaice which was OK but not memorable, although the skin-on fries were tasty and the salad was OK. We enjoyed a couple of large glasses of number 17 [Tin Pot Hut] at £8.45 each. I then choose the Tart of the Day for dessert and my partner had a Vanilla Pot, both of which were OK. However, my pastry was so tough and I had to request a dessert fork to enable me to eat it with the dessert spoon. They clearly don't automatically set the table with both items of dessert cutlery, which should be normal for a restaurant of this standard, despite my initial pleasure at noticing very nice linen napkins at all place settings. The restaurant quickly filled up [well, it was Valentine's Day] but we were surprised that a couple who arrived at the next table to us were given only one menu with apologies from the waiter saying that he was waiting for more menus to be printed! We felt the male member of staff who appeared to be in charge was very poorly dressed in a rather tattie pair of jeans for a restaurant of this quality, although the other waiting staff were nicely dressed, very polite and helpful. All in all, an OK sort of lunch but for £80 [including tip] it was pricey and we'll undoubtedly be heading back to Lucca next time."

Not my first visit and will not be my last. Excellent service, good food and the lunchtime set menu is exceptional value for money.

We eat here often. The staff are friendly and attentive and are always happy to advise a dish. The food is exceptional for the money and so far they have never failed to produce a first class meal and we have been many many times. Cannot recommend them enough. I cannot make a comment on the hotel element as I have never used that facility

Had a very pleasant lunch with an old fried at thee Mistley Thorn. We both had excellent Shellfish and Fish starters and mains which were beyond reproach. I also pushed the boat out and on my waitresses recommendation had a divine cheesecake with Toffee Sauce. I rarely go for cheesecake but on this occasion, the recommendation was spot on. View menu

We recently enjoyed Sunday lunch at The Thorn with friends. It was not our first visit and we were not disappointed against our expectations. Service was very attentive and our menu selections were well prepared and presented. Seating was a bit congested and the restaurant was quite busy but overall this did not present any problem. We will visit again!

On a journey to see friends, we travelled an extra 30 miles to have dinner at the Mistley Thorn on the strength of a recommendation it didn't disappoint. Excellent menu and wines, superb food which was perfectly prepared and brimming with excellent combinations of flavours and textures. The staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient. We would return from London just to eat there!

We have stayed at Mistley Thorn Hotel twice and this was our fourth meal, but NEVER again! Each time we have noticed a decline in quality. Service is personel wandering around, but no one actually taking notice of the tables! The food deteriorates as you look at it. The fish and chips used to be superb, but now the batter is less crisp, and chips soggy. My last meal of sea bass wass fatty, and the cabbage noir drowned in water. The less said about the archichoke, the better! View menu

The staff were friendly, attentive and offered a warm welcome. The service was impeccable with just the right amount of time between courses. The menu offered lots of choice to suit all palates and pockets, with the local menu bring excellent value. The wine list was extensive without being overwhelming and the staff were knowledgeable about what was on offer. The foot was superb! Nicely presented without being pretentious, hot and full of flavour. We will certainly be going back.

Starters were really good and I enjoyed the main course too just the delivery was poor, service was very slow I would understand if the restaurant was busy but it wasn't. We had to ask twice to get our first drinks and still didn't get them till after some of the starters arrived, the food was served a plate at a time with long delays in between so some had to start so their food didn't get cold waiting for other meals to arrive. Normally the service here is good so quite disappointed.

"Been twice before fine. Last Friday October 27th husband said shall we book the Bull for tomorrow? I said ask when is skate next on the menu? Husband came off phone said got skate today and lady said if any left it will be on tomorrow so have asked her to save you a wing and she agreed. Upon arrival went in sat down asked what drinks we wanted ordered. Same lady took our food order. Husband ordered Garlic mushrooms i declined a starter as did not know how big the fish would be, I noticed on the specials board skate done in frying pan with capers so said to husband better make sure if i can have in batter, Husband went to speak to this lady who was behind the bar area and she said yes no problem. I say with my drink why husband ate his starter and then we sat and sat and by the clock in front of us about 15 minutes. Then a man came up and took husbands starter plate away and we sat and sat and out came husbands steak and my fish/chips asked if wanted sauces said yes and asked for vinegar. Upon opening the fish to put the vinegar on having noticed the batter was dull and not glistening like should be this batter was like a suet crust that thick and dense. Nobody came to ask if all okay so ate the fish had better and put the rest aside to take home for our dog, I noticed people coming in through the other door and going to the bar and getting served and we were ignored, Then i waved my hand and a lady came over and i said this batter is awful thick and doughy and i can taste flour as though not cooked through properly. She said will tell the Chef. Whilst been waiting for attention had noticed another lady laying up a table in the distance as said to my husband laying for non existent people and ignoring us. First lady came back and i asked what did the Chef say she said have not spoken to her yet thought she said her, She said do you want to speak to Chef i said yes. Then this lady who had been laying up a table earlier came up and i asked her who are you ? she said what do you mean who are you i asked are you the Chef? Then suddenly this man appeared and said i will not have you being rude to my staff. I said have not been rude to anyone and he looked at my husband and said and you whistled at my wife. My husband is in his eighties why would he whistle at some middle aged woman and it turned out she was the one that took our order when we first sat down, Surely if my husband had whistled she would have said something to him unless she needs a mouth piece meaning her husband to speak for her. I said since coming in i have not got up Chef said i know and i went on have not left my husband and assure you he has not whistled anyone.. Chef said to husband if you have not i take that back then, Then went on he did not want any money for our food, I said about the awful batter he did not want to know, For the benefit of the few people eating and listening he was trying to deflect my complaint about the food and infer we were rude customers by husband whistling and me complaining. Forgot before Chef came out the first lady said Chef said there is nothing wrong with the batter. To which i said i am eating it and paying for it not him so he cannot tell me what is okay and what is not, Perhaps that was construed as being rude because he tried to tell me the same when he came out and i said do not talk to me like i am five. We got up to leave and then he said to my husband in future do not whistler at my wife as if we would go back there again this was after he had said i take that back then if you did not whistle my wife."
