"This is the second time I’ve had the dubious pleasure of coming across this challenging human. The landlord is unreal. Last time I gave him the benefit of the doubt this time he doesn’t get that benefit. Asked us if we were Gallon Walkers. Explained I didn’t know what that was. He shouted at me that I WAS A Gallon Walker so I could have a plastic glass or leave! I said that I didn’t mind having a plastic glass if that suited him but I still didn’t know what he meant. He then began yelling literally yelling at me that I was a Gallon Walker!! I still have no idea what this incredibly aggressive, unpleasant man was on about so we left and went to the club down the road. Seriously... this joker does not deserve your custom. I actually think he’s mad. What IS a Gallon Walker? And why is this guy so opposed to them? Absolute nutter. He doesn’t deserve your custom. Shame really because the pub is lovely the landlord is mental though."

try to avoid this place if you are doing the Coast to Coast. The Man who runs the tavern is souless and really should not be involved in running the business. Its very apparent he does not welcome anyone.

We had the Sunday roast was good to have it served on hot plates so the food stayed warm till we finished our meal ,the meat was tender vegetables fresh not frozen ,staff polite would definitely use again .

I visited this restaurant with friends and stopped in for a drink. The bartender/owner was incredibly unfriendly and rude. It seemed like he didn't care about the customers who support his business. I won't be coming back and will choose to go to the Working Men's Club across the street instead.

We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The ale and food were exceptional! We were staying in the village after a long 6-hour drive, and were in the mood for a good bar meal and a beer or gin. Despite not reading any reviews beforehand, we were pleasantly surprised by our fantastic visit. View menu

Visited twice in early July 2023 as we were staying in nearby B&B. On first visit we had drinks only. Second visit, drinks and food. Good real ale, pleasant atmosphere. Food was satisfying and filling, though nothing too fancy doesn't claim to be. Had previously had a drink here in December 2022, and had no issues then either.

Just travelled a long way and went for a pint before checking into accommodation, had the nerve to want served to get a packet of crisps and bag of nuts, he could not have been more irritated I interrupted his 4th fag break in 20 minutes, needs another Landlord that knows what customer service is, we never went back . I highly recommend the Wheatsheaf in Egton. Grosmont is a lovely place, just the landlord at this pub obviously doesn't like humans.

We called in fairly early on a Friday night we hadn't booked. The landlord could probably do with lessons in customer service and turned us away saying he was on his own, there were 2 empty tables in the bar area and the dining area was closed. We booked for the following night . The pie ok but nothing special and the pasta bake was nice. Eventually he came to clear the table we asked about desert and was told there would be an hour wait. Didn't seem like he wanted the business and not very accomodating View menu

After reading previous reviews, it's difficult to believe that the owner could actually be as rude as people say. But, trust me, he is. My friends and I visit this restaurant 3 or 4 times a year while walking and traveling on the NYMR. This time, we brought some friends along and were spending a significant amount of money, not just nursing a drink until the train arrived. Unfortunately, we were made to feel unwelcome and as if the owner was doing us a favor by allowing us to be there at all. It was a shocking experience. Our visiting friends couldn't believe it. The draught beers were good though.

Staying close by during our Coast to Coast walk. Knowing the food situation in Grosmont I booked 4 weeks before we arrived by phone at 7.30pm. Arrived at 7pm to be informed that I couldn't have booked as they stop serving at 7. The incredibly rude barman told us we were lying and wouldn't serve us . We left and had to travel to Whitby by train just to eat. Told another couple who we knew, his phone had been hacked and it can't have been him that took the booking??? The lady proceeded to ring his number which surprise surprise he answered. If you get the option while doing the C2C, avoid staying at Grosmont . Stay in Egton Bridge a mile or 2 before .
