"We paid a premium upgrade to a very large room, which was huge, but it was at the front of the building overlooking the main road. The noise of the traffic woke us at about 04.30 and you have little chance of rest thereafter. The bed was comfy, but the furniture and wardrobes are old, dowdy, dark brown lumps from the fifties. Some of the rooms bar areas downstairs on the ground floor are absolutely stunning, but they too are cluttered with cheap tables and bucket chairs circa 1960 1970. The breakfast was good, but the service was slow, with only one person on duty. Housekeeping was hasty. This hotel is crying out to be turned into an up marketplace that people will expect to pay premium rates to stay in. As things stand, it is a chain pub crammed with shabby old bits of furniture. Fixing giant TVs on to the bedroom walls also does not enhance the feel of the rooms, which should reflect their 16th century splendour. Given the cost of the room, we had expected much more, and the traffic noise in the early hours deprives one of a decent night's sleep."

A really lovely hotel over 700 years old. Quirky rooms, good food, friendly staff. An experience not to miss. Plumbing a bit suspect but that is down to the age of the hotel. Rooms: 5 Service: 5 Location: 5 Hotel highlights: Quiet

I've yet to have a bad meal here. Always accomodating and friendly service. Tara, who tends bar and serves the tables is always friendly and efficient. I've ordered from the standard menu and the 2 meals for £25 special Monday to Thursday covers a lot of that menu also and is very good value. Worth a visit if you haven't been.

We paid a premium rate for a large room, which was at the front overlooking the main road. We were woken by traffic at 04.30 both mornings. Service was average. Breakfast OK but slow. Coffee on both days was undrinkable, hence I chose to drink instant which was tellingly available as well. Tatty and drabbly furnished throughout, despite its proud history. Disappointing. Rooms: 2

Although there were plenty of staff, too many for the size of the bar, the queues for drinks were so long,(out of bars and along corridor), that we only had one drink in the time we were there. So we sat and chatted for a couple of hours before leaving and moving on to another establishment. None of the staff managed to crack a smile which didn't give a good impression. Service: 3

"To the wonderful owner and staff at Strawberry Teapot, My story starts with a trip planned to this cafe with my mum for her birthday, and will hopefully help to reassure other wheelchair/powerchair reliant customers : Accessibility: The owner had a conversation with us to tell us about their accessibility (there is a step at the front of the store, but access to the outdoor seating behind the cafe without steps . I use a powerchair, which can't, unfortunately, be lifted up with the help of others, but other smaller wheelchairs will still be able to be lifted up past the step on the front door. Despite this powerchair hurdle, we sat outdoors, which was beautifully arranged with summer plants. Food Allergies/ Dietary requirements: My family is a mix of vegetarian, vegan, and meat eater people, which was no problem at all to the staff at the Strawberry Teapot! We had booked in for an afternoon tea and were served three separate food servings (a three tier cake stand per person , filled with sandwiches, cake, scones, and biscuits. These were delectable, and we were even allowed to take the cakes we didn't eat home with us (they were too good to leave behind! . Overall, we had an absolutely wonderful time and will not hesitate to book again. If I could, I would fetch fresh scones every weekend (they were THAT good . Thank you to all the staff there that helped to make the afternoon tea special, you are all wonderful people, and I have no doubt that you will make every other customer's experience just as wonderful. Couldn't recommend highly enough."

"We live locally and have eaten at the Hare regularly. We took another couple twice in the last 4 weeks but tonight was just awful. It took 25 minutes for a drink to be served but the problem centered around my wife 's meal and the...way the staff dealt with the issue. She ordered a steak but was served two small pieces rather than one steak, with one much thicker than the other so clearly two separate pieces. One was cooked as ordered but the other small piece was totally over cooked and unacceptable. We told the waitress who insisted it was one piece of steak which was just an embarrassing lie as clearly she had not seen it being cooked. We know that for certain as my wife had been to the loo where there was no toilet paper. She told the same waitress who said she would deal with it, but instead stayed leaning on the bar rather than dealing with the matter and clearly this was during the time when my wife 's single piece of steak was being cooked. My wife left most of the meal, including the chips which were over cooked and dry. like reheated than triple cooked, plus the two tomatoes looked simply awful so she left them.. In fairness my fish pie was good. The waitress spoke to the kitchen who offered to cook another steak but my wife said no as my husband would have finished his meal and I don 't want to eat on my own. We were going to order desserts but decided we would just leave. When we went to pay we asked them to take the steak off the bill. The lady who was presumably in charge refused and said she would only deduct half as my wife had supposedly eaten most of the meal . Not one member of staff had been near our table to check what was on the plate as we had just got up to pay, so clearly this was yet another lie. The best part of her meal was the peppercorn sauce and the salad. I said we eat here regularly as we are local but tonight was just poor, but the lady still insisted we had to pay for half of the steak. I said this is just totally unacceptable as the steak and most of the rest of the meal was dire and if she insisted we pay half we would never eat there again. She still insisted we had to pay half saying we were going to offer you free desserts , so the solution was £12.40 for two free desserts but she still wanted half of £17.50 for the steak. The maths do not add up and we left furious. I paid the bill and very sadly we will never et there again. I hope the owner of the establishment reads this review as they have just lost a very good customer, just because the staff lied about the situation and would not then resolve the matter correctly. A very sad (and infuriating) experience!"
