"We used to go here quite a bit and for some reason left a long hiatus before going back, so I was really looking forward to the great standard I remember. I'm not sure if this has been taken over by someone new or has just grown a bit stale, but I was not impressed. The dining room at the back of the pub is light and airy, but does have an odd feel about it. I didn't feel that we were really far enough away from other diners and the tables are arranged a little strangely. The really irritating thing about the place is that the windows above the smoking terrace let the second hand cigarette smoke waft in and permeate the dining room. Not the most pleasant smell to accompany lunch! We went on a Sunday, and the only option is a roast with either pork, beef, chicken or nut roast. This was fine, we were in the mood for a roast (luckily! and it's usually a good sign that a menu is limited. The format was the same whatever you ordered a yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots and cabbage with gravy. It was not brilliant in fact it was a little tired. I enjoyed the parsnip, but the pork was not a brilliant piece of meat, not a generous portion and grey. The yorkshire pudding wasn't too bad, but the roast potatoes weren't crispy and overall it was disappointing. I decided to have a cup of coffee afterwards and asked hopefully for skimmed milk. They didn't have any (which is not so unusual , but they didn't have any semi skimmed either. They only serve whole milk, even though the waiter admitted that most customers asked for at least semi skimmed. He suggested an off licence just up the road may sell skimmed milk, so I left the table in a surreal move and went to try and buy some drinkable milk for my coffee. The off licence was closed and I declined the whole milk (and the whole coffee ."

A very good pub with excellent Paulaner at a price which shames some other pubs nearby. Nice vibe, great staff, good mix of humans and dogs. Well done, this is a PUB.

We popped in as a last minute thing and are glad we did. I had the steak and my friend the salmon we're both comfortably full and enjoyed our meal. The music is good but not too loud, staff are polite and attentive without being overbearing. We'll be coming again!

Firstly, Carl, you’re a gentlemen and a squire! What a fantastic experience! My wife and I needed a place to eat with our pup after his visit to Village Vet (next door). The staff are amazing! The cocktail (Paloma) is wonderful. Great food, great music, great atmosphere, perfect lighting. We will be back (plural)! Thanks guys! View menu

I've visited the pub two times now since it's new management have been installed. Both times for Sunday Roast. Really great roast. The Cheesy Leaks Red Cabbage are superb and the beef was tender and full of flavor. Perfect Roast Potatoes, full bodied gravy, al dente carrots and greens rounded off a heart warming meal. This is what Sundays are all about in England! The Fire was roaring and there was plenty of room for young kids to play. Really like having plenyy Will be back with more people next time. 10 /10 Sunday Lunch!

I had a sunday roast here- the beef was grey and leathery- cut in thick slabs which had to be chewed for 5 minutes before swallowing... really disappointed! The staff didn't even come and check if everything was okay with the food, and collected our plates a good two hours after we had eaten, by which time I couldn't be bothered to raise the issue of the horror roast. The price is on a par with most gastro pubs in the area- if they're going to do terrible food and not have a real chef in the kitchen why can't this be reflected in the prices?!

Third visit to this lovely pub. The staff were friendly and didn't appear to mind that despite approaching us twice for our order we were too busy chatting to decide. A welcome bottle of tap water and glases were brought to our table as we were about to sit down, so there was no need to ask for some. For the meal I chose the veg shepherd's pie absolutely delicious and I'm still raving about it. My friends had the fish and both said it was lovely. Empty plates proved that. Overall a lovely atmosphere, friendly, helpful staff. We we sat chatting sometime after our meal and without needing to ask, our bottled water was removed and replaced with a new one. Great service and consistently brillian... View menu

Well this is a typical south London Boozer converted into a gastro pub experience but really is just a pub which makes its money from food these days...Visited for Sunday lunch and think the limited menu was because any more ambition would have been fatal...That said the Sunday lunch was more than acceptable but not outstanding. The nut loaf veggie option was liked by my wife who can be very fussy....The Eton mess was well....a mess but the 3 berry tart was excellent...maybe homemade but unlikely...it was that good. Pretty empty at 2pm on Sunday so may be the bad reviews are taking its toll but hey it's Forest Hill so cut it some slack.4 people x 2 courses plus coffees and beers for 78 pound...

I think it depends where you regularly eat but this is one of the best pubs in that part of south east London for both food and atmosphere. Service has always been good and the beer is well kept. The food is cheap and you can certainly get 2 courses for 2 and a bottle of wine for less than £50.Generally they have several slightly different bar snacks dipping breads and various cheeses and meats on a platter for less than £10. Free wi fi is always a plus and as several people have said its less than 1 min walk from the tube station. Jump the tube, go to The Hob (large pub opposite the train station) for comedy nights and then to the Dartmouth for food/drinks.Note most days it becomes a creche...
