"Called in for quick snack. Opted for the soup which tasted fine, but served in the smallest dish possible, think finger bowl. Without exaggeration, two portions would have been required for a normal bowl of soup.Waitress asked if it was OK to which I replied it was except for the minuscule portion. She asked if I wanted a bit more, which was welcomed. So more was duly delivered and you 've guessed it, I got charged for another bowl, making what would have been a standard bowl of soup in other restaurants we visit, £9.90.I obviously misinterpreted her offer of a bit more as a small top up. As it was, it was another overpriced bowl of soup. This opportunism is plain silly. My wife and I are local to the Grapes, and so will obviously pass on our experience. What should have been an opportunity for the Grapes to show its qualities and create goodwill was wasted. Our benchmark restaurant is the Pipe and Glass at South Dalton, which is outstanding in every respect and rightly or wrongly we compare others against the P&G.The Grapes has a good feel to it, but whilst the soup was flavoursome, we came away with a bad taste."

Excellent service and good a la carte menu. Dog friendly. Very welcoming to well behaved dog owners. Plenty of car parking. Good range of beers and gins

Lovely pub/restaurant. Service absolutely outstanding and food superb. We went on a Tuesday evening and it was so good we were back on Friday and it was every bit as good again.

The menu sounded really good but we had only called in for a drink. Lovely pub although the lagers did seem pricey compared to similar places, this is clearly more of a pub for diners than drinkers. View menu

Today we stopped for lunch and both had the slow-braised steak and ale pie. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, the pastry was delicious, and the staff were polite and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Visited this evening with family, five of us including a child. Delicious food reasonably priced and nothing was too much trouble, they even catered for our little one giving her exactly what she wanted even though it wasn't actually on the menu! I can definitely recommend. View menu

We had lunch with our friends at this restaurant for the second time, and it was their first visit. We were impressed by the welcoming and friendly service, as well as the excellent food. Although a bit expensive, it was definitely worth it. We regret not having room for dessert, as it looked delicious. We will definitely be back!

What a wonderful meal, the food is second to non, and not often either myself or my husband are too bothered for vegetables, but I have to say they were beautiful, and this sounds really sad, but I have never tasted carrots like them, Home made Bread which was delicious as was the soup, and the Braised Steak in Guiness with Colcannon Mash was very tasty, I opted for the Cajun Salmon , which was a generous portion and cooked perfectly. Staff were wonderful, and Kay is just wonderful, all in all we cant wait to return,

"The problem began with our arrival. We are 3 adults in our mid-60s and we had already climbed one set of steps to access the bar in the pub. We were escorted to our room up two more flights of narrow stairs. On entering our room, we could smell the damp in the room and discovered mould on walls behind furniture and in the corners of the window frames. We checked the prices of the evening meals on offer and there wasn't enough variety for our party and they were quite expensive. So we decided to eat out. I asked what time the pub closed and was told, when the last customer leaves. I thought that was a bit vague so I said that we would be back at 10-ish. We arrived back just after 10pm to find all entrances to the pub were fully locked up and we were unable to get in. I called the pub and, after a while, my call went to voicemail with a message that there was no one to answer my call. I left a voicemail, this was followed by another message to say that there was no one to respond to my voicemail! My party had got back into the car as it was raining and I drove to the front of the pub and sounded my horn for some time then drove to the back of the pub. At this point, a man appeared saying he had a message to come and let us in so, finally, we got in to the pub to access our room. We had an uncomfortable night but managed to get up for the early breakfast (great breakfast! and check-out. We raised all the damp and mould issues with the man who had let us in and, as one of us was asthmatic, told him that we would be leaving a poor review of the room and that they shouldn't book that room out to any one else until the issues were resolved."
