"I was very impressed by this restaurant! The old building was stunning, with a beautiful fire in the bar and lovely decor in the dining room. The atmosphere was cosy and inviting, with colourful velvet curtains, tartans, nice lighting, and a great photo wall. The menu was varied and exciting, and we enjoyed everything we ordered. The veg was excellent, especially the carrot and swede mash, and the roast beef was delicious. The salmon risotto and belly pork were also fantastic. It was nice to have specials in addition to the main menu. The crumble was one of the best I've had, with perfectly cooked fruit and quality ice cream. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I can't wait to return and try the soup and sandwich during the week, and the pizza cooked outdoors in the summer!"

Absolutely banging. Credit to the chef and the team. Absolutely stunning and tasty jerk chicken. My friend had curry goat and I sampled this too. Wow. Just awesome. 10 put of 10

The vegan options at this restaurant were really great! Not just your typical plant-based burger, but there were also other lovely and unique choices. A pleasant surprise for a rural pub!

I cannot find any fault with this place. The decor is lovely and the food was fabulous. Everything is homemade, no frozen oven chips here. Definitely worth every penny. I will definitely be returning for more. View menu

The food was excellent and reasonably priced. Both of our meals were perfect and we could not find any faults. The staff was great; one waiter handled a challenging customer with professionalism and handled it perfectly.

I recently stayed in a cottage in Lastingham for a few nights to explore the Yorkshire Moors. I was pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant just a short walk away. It's rare to find a pub in such a small village that also caters to vegans. I've attached a photo of my dinner and the dessert menu in the gallery above. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the main menu.

Had a three night stay at the Blacksmiths Arms last week and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. There are only three bedrooms and we had a very comfortable en suite room overlooking the church opposite. The food was excellent, as would to be expected, since the pub is owned by Ali Moran, who is a talented chef. The pub is an ideal base to go off exploring the moors or going further afield to places like Whitby. View menu

We had a meal last year while visiting Hutton le Hole and decided to return when we came back. We were pleased to find that the food was just as delicious and the portions were generous. The food may take some time to arrive as it is served when ready, but it is definitely worth the wait. We dined at this restaurant three nights in a row and enjoyed every meal. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the service, like the food, was excellent. Thank you.

During a recent short break in nearby Hutton le Hole, I found myself looking for a place to eat since the pub was closed. I decided to try this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. Despite being a traditional rural pub, it had a surprisingly extensive vegan menu, including a separate dessert menu for vegans. I ended up visiting twice and enjoyed excellent meals on both occasions. It's worth noting that the restaurant is located in a rural sports area, so expect to see stuffed animals and hunting gear on the walls. It's a popular spot for local gamekeepers and farmers, but the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant can get quite busy on weekends, so booking in advance...

"The problem began with our arrival. We are 3 adults in our mid-60s and we had already climbed one set of steps to access the bar in the pub. We were escorted to our room up two more flights of narrow stairs. On entering our room, we could smell the damp in the room and discovered mould on walls behind furniture and in the corners of the window frames. We checked the prices of the evening meals on offer and there wasn't enough variety for our party and they were quite expensive. So we decided to eat out. I asked what time the pub closed and was told, when the last customer leaves. I thought that was a bit vague so I said that we would be back at 10-ish. We arrived back just after 10pm to find all entrances to the pub were fully locked up and we were unable to get in. I called the pub and, after a while, my call went to voicemail with a message that there was no one to answer my call. I left a voicemail, this was followed by another message to say that there was no one to respond to my voicemail! My party had got back into the car as it was raining and I drove to the front of the pub and sounded my horn for some time then drove to the back of the pub. At this point, a man appeared saying he had a message to come and let us in so, finally, we got in to the pub to access our room. We had an uncomfortable night but managed to get up for the early breakfast (great breakfast! and check-out. We raised all the damp and mould issues with the man who had let us in and, as one of us was asthmatic, told him that we would be leaving a poor review of the room and that they shouldn't book that room out to any one else until the issues were resolved."
