The Old Bowling Green

My experience at this restaurant for takeout was excellent. The meal was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. The process of collecting the food and making payment was easy.

We had if course try the local pup in Winster we were given the opening times by the owner of our cottage times we also advertised at the pub also so no excuses not to know when it’s open times are.

Although the pub found it difficult to cater for our large party of twelve, the staff worked very hard to ensure our two tables of six didn’t eat too far apart in time. The food was well presented and tasted great. One or two good beers.

After several visits, this pub cannot be faulted. There is a warm (literal and metaphorical) welcome and one is not rushed. After ordering, there is sufficient time to enjoy a drink before the meal is served by local teenagers who are extremely polite and efficient. The beef roast dinner was delicious as usual, as was the dessert. It has to be one of the best Sunday lunches around thank you.

We visited on New Year's Eve for a relaxed drink before our family meal in a nearby rented property, Winster Hall. We had a lovely chat with the hospitable owner who gave us all sorts of interesting stories about the village and the history of pubs in Winster as well as some tasty nibbles. A great range of beers and drinks, friendly local atmosphere and cosy seating areas around the central bar all made the experience a memorable start to our NYE celebrations.

I ha e been coming here for maybe 14 years ,often only once or twice a year but David and Marilyn do a great job and David turns out excellent meals every time ,his passion for perfection in cooking is very apparant.nothing is too much trouble ,and we havenever had any cause for complaint.we travel from leics so a good hour and a half but well worth it.A nice quiet pub in nice area with nice hosts and great food with large portions ...no room for improvement ...already at tbe top....gary

What a find this pub was! We booked Sunday lunch (30 December 2018) and I’m so glad they were not doing the normal Roasts (which, by all accounts, are very good) as instead I chose Steak and Kidney Pie. So very glad I did. Not a round Pie but a proper slice of truly home made pie. Washed down with a couple of great pints of Bradfield Farmers Ale. A perfect combination. Followed by an equally good homemade Treacle Tart. Oh and my wife loved her meal, too: prawn starter, excellent home made Cumberland sausages and mash and glasses of Merlot. We were made very welcome even with our dirty wellies. A “proper” pub. A rare find.

During these difficult times of isolation, it's a great relief to treat yourself every now and then. In honor of Mother's Day, we enjoyed a delicious Sunday Roast from the Old Bowling Green, accompanied by a few pints of Moonshine. However, instead of being at the restaurant, we indulged in this feast at our dining table in front of a roaring fire. It was a delightful experience, with our meal beautifully presented on proper plates and a separate pot of gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was a standout. Many thanks to David and the team for providing this wonderful service, which is sure to become another reason to celebrate in our charming village.

My wife, an 85-year-old lady, and I enjoyed a fantastic 3-course meal at this restaurant. There was a wide variety of choices, and the staff even offered a smaller portion to our elderly guest who was concerned about too many vegetables. We declined, as she just wanted plenty of meat, and she ended up finishing her entire meal. It was nice to see the staff paying attention to our conversation. We visited for Sunday lunch and had the roast, which was delicious with tender meat and no tough bits. The desserts were generous in size but surprisingly light, and my ginger sponge was particularly amazing. The pub was well laid out with ample parking, which can often be a challenge in a small Derbys...
